Looks like the Deptford plans for a new HQ for News International have been scrapped so now it's between Waterloo and Canary Wharf.

A purpose built office with 350,000 to 400,000 sq ft? That's got to be in the new P+O tower over the station doesn't it in Waterloo? And in Canary Wharf - does any of the current builds have that much space? Could this be a tenant for Riverside South? Actually, looking at the Canary Wharf site, they list Heron Quays West as a potential site with 600,000 sq ft.

News International will announce the preferred destination of its new headquarters later this month, with premises in London's Waterloo area the most likely option, according to senior sources at the company.
Senior insiders have said that an announcement over the wholesale move of all non-printing staff from its Wapping HQ could be made in two weeks.

They added that the Waterloo site has "a 70% chance of being picked" as the new home of NI's stable of newspapers, the Sun, the News of the World, the Times and the Sunday Times.

However, a final decision has not been reached and there remains a "slight chance", according to another insider, that NI executives could plump for office space in Canary Wharf.

Murdoch’s news for Waterloo

07.09.07

News International is in talks to relocate to London’s Waterloo.

Rupert Murdoch’s media group is thought to be looking for between 300,000 sq ft and 400,000 sq ft of office space at P&O and Morgan Stanley Real Estate’s redevelopment of Elizabeth House.

The media group is about to announce the sale of its existing headquarters in Wapping and a relocation of its non-printing staff.

News International is thought to be at an early stage of talks and may consider Shell’s nearby Shell Centre site, as well as other options such as Canary Wharf, where rival newspapers are located.

David Hudson, development director at P&O Estates, would not comment on the speculation but said: ‘Waterloo is a prime location and perfect for organisations such as News International.’

The Sun, the News of the World, the Times and the Sunday Times are based at the media group’s Wapping headquarters.

It was designed by Sir Terry Farrell and dubbed ‘Fortress Wapping’ and ‘Castle Grayskull’ because of its appearance.

A decision on a new headquarters is expected in the autumn. The move from the site would mark the end of an era in which the media industry was revolutionised.

In 1986 Murdoch faced the wrath of the unions after he moved his newspapers from Fleet Street to Wapping.

Its existing site in Wapping is a former dockyard and is considered to be a good redevelopment prospect.
