Update: Spaceport America by Foster and Partners

Project: Spaceport America
Designed by Foster + Partners
Co-architects: SMPC Architects
Location: New Mexico, USA
Website: www.fosterandpartners.com
Spaceport America marks the first step into exploring space travel on commercial basis, work of Foster and Partners this state of the art project is now completed. For more images and words from the architects continue after the jump:

The Virgin Galactic Gateway to Space, a combined terminal and hangar facility, will support up to two WhiteKnightTwo and five SpaceShipTwo vehicles. The 120,000 square-foot building has been designed by Foster + Partners, working with URS Corporation and New Mexico architects SMPC.

The Gateway will also house all astronaut preparation and celebration facilities, a mission control centre and a friends and family area. Entrance is via a deep channel cut into the landscape and its retaining walls form an exhibition space that documents a history of space exploration alongside the story of the region.

With minimal embodied carbon and few additional energy requirements, the scheme has been designed to achieve LEED Gold accreditation. The low-lying form is dug into the landscape to exploit the thermal mass, which buffers the building from the extremes of the New Mexico climate as well as catching the westerly winds for ventilation; and maximum use is made of daylight via skylights. Built using local materials and construction techniques, it aims to be both sustainable and sensitive to its surroundings.

Spaceport America Welcome Center Runway Upgrades In The Works

NY Times

LAS CRUCES -- The New Mexico Spaceport Authority board of directors awarded two more contracts this week, moving the spaceport closer to its scheduled grand opening in December 2013. The board awarded a runway modification contract to A.S. Horner, an Albuquerque company with an 80-year history of doing business.

The new contract will extend the existing 10,000-foot runway to 12,000 feet by July 2013. The $8.4 million expansion is expected to begin soon. Spaceport Authority directors also awarded a contact to Ashbaugh Construction of Truth or Consequences for its proposed Sierra County Welcome Center. The visitors center will be built next to one of the Truth or Consequences exits from Interstate 25.

The extended runway "will provide additional safety for landing Virgin Galactic flights as well as make the spaceport more attractive to other aerospace customers," said Christine Anderson, executive director of the New Mexico Spaceport Authority.

Spaceport America, situated next to the U.S. Army's White Sands Missile Range in Southern New Mexico, is the first purpose-built commercial spaceport in the world. Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic is the spaceport's anchor tenant and customer. The complex, north of Las Cruces, has been providing commercial vertical launch services since 2006. "The Welcome Center will serve as the departure point for the 200,000 spaceport visitors expected each year," Anderson said. "It is a great location with exposure to passing motorists on the interstate."

The six-acre Welcome Center will be built at an estimated cost of $1,045,440. Construction is scheduled to start in January. New Mexico Spaceport Authority officials also said the large terminal hangar being built for Virgin Galactic spacecraft is almost complete

SpaceX signs lease at spaceport
By Associated Presson Tue, May 7, 2013
POSTED: 12:23 pm

(AP) — Another space industry heavyweight has signed on to use New Mexico’s Spaceport America — Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, Gov. Susana Martinez announced Tuesday. It agreed to a three-year lease to do testing of its “Grasshopper” reusable rocket in southern New Mexico.

SpaceX is one of the leading developers of rockets and spacecraft and is one of the companies the $209 million taxpayer-built spaceport project has been trying to recruit. “We’ve done a lot of work to level the playing field so we can compete in the space industry,” Martinez said in a statement. “This is just the first step in broadening the base out at the Spaceport and securing even more tenants. I’m proud to welcome SpaceX to New Mexico.”

Spaceport America Executive Director Christine Anderson said the Grasshopper project is moving from McGregor, Texas, to New Mexico because the rocket needs to be tested at higher altitudes. The reusable rocket could revolutionize the commercial space industry by greatly reducing costs, she said. Traditional rockets burn up on re-entry.

Officials said they were unsure how many jobs would be located in New Mexico. SpaceX employs more than 3,000 in California, Texas, Washington, D.C., and Florida, according to a news release. Richard Branson’s space tourism company, Virgin Galactic LLC, is the anchor tenant at the spaceport.

Also on Tuesday, Virgin Galactic announced that it has hired two new pilots as the testing moves into the final stages for its spacecraft for taking tourists into space at $200,000 a head.

Anderson called the dual announcements “great milestones” for the spaceport, which has struggled to attract other businesses. Earlier this year, lawmakers approved legislation to limit liability lawsuits for the industry in an effort to be more competitive.

[...]
Operations at the spaceport for Virgin Galactic should ramp up soon ahead of their maiden flight scheduled for 2014.

Virgin Galactic, Spaceport America sign key airspace access deal

Quote:
Agreement between Virgin Galactic, Spaceport America, and the Federal Aviation Administration is the first to cover a commercial spaceline

Sun-News report
Posted: 05/29/2014 06:53:35 AM MDT

LAS CRUCES - Virgin Galactic, the privately-funded space company owned by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group and Abu Dhabi's aabar Investments PJS, and Spaceport America announced Thursday that they have signed a joint agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that helps clear the path for commercial flights of SpaceShipTwo. The historic agreement sets out the parameters for how routine space missions launched from Spaceport America will be integrated into the National Airspace System. Specifically, the agreement spells out how the FAA's Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center and the New Mexico Spaceport Authority will work with Virgin Galactic to smoothly and safely provide clear airspace for SpaceShipTwo.
"Our team is working hard to begin routine and affordable space launches from Spaceport America and this agreement brings us another step closer to that goal," said Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides. "We are grateful to the FAA and New Mexico for their partnership to achieve this milestone."

The agreement provides procedures for the safe integration of commercial, licensed space launch operations into the National Airspace System from Spaceport America. The New Mexico Spaceport Authority also has an agreement in place with the US Army's White Sands Missile Range to support space launch activities within WSMR airspace.
