Last Sunday I went for a stroll to the Camberwell market. This market is run most Sundays in the carpark behind the major shopping strip of Bourke Rd, Camberwell. It mostly deals in bric a brac, but there can be some genuine bargains hidden amongest the cheap jewelry and tacky clothes. I especially recomend browsing through the second-hand books.

Unfortunately I overslept (it was a Sunday) and so arrived when a lot of the stalls were packing up. Still was an enjoyable rumage though.

Spring racing carnival is just around the corner ladies, so now's a good time to grab that hat or facinator for Oaks day.

I was very tempted to bye the Planet of the Apes board game!

The Camberwell Forum lies in ruins. Statues of Ceaser and Saturn, Juno and Augustus lie dashed upon the ground - hurled there by the vicious barbarian hordes.

Didn't have time for one of these unfortunately.

Finished off with a sausage with extra onion from the Lions BBQ. The market and Camberwell spread out before me.

And further off in the distance - Melbourne.

Say goodbye Brandy.

Docklands

Now for a few assorted photos from Melbourne's new face - Docklands!

image hosted on flickr

Docklands is an exciting new development for Melbourne, with the old innercity docks being transformed into a vibrant new suburb. Only a third completed, when finished (in around 2015) Docklands will have virtually doubled the size of Melbourne's CBD. The above photo from the Eureka Skydeck (more on this latter) gives a good overview of the sight. It's a sea of cranes!

Our tour of Docklands actually begins in the traditional CBD - Flagstaff Station to be precise.

image hosted on flickr

Here we alight from our train and make our way up to... LaTrobe St.

image hosted on flickr

LaTrobe St is the northern most street of the hoddle grid - Melbourne's original street plan. Flagstaff Station lies under it's western reaches, in the heart of the legal district. Looking further west we can catch a glimpse of our destination.

image hosted on flickr

Or by turning our heads east, we can spy some interesting towerage.

image hosted on flickr

We now begin to cross over the western railyards into Docklands proper. why not take a photo of these as we pass?

image hosted on flickr

Over the other side of the bridge is the undulating roof of Southern Cross Station.

image hosted on flickr

And ahead lie some interesting facades.

image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

I love how Melbourne's tram wires are a net for the sky.

image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

The city itself seems so far away, almost as if it were a mirage.

image hosted on flickr

No skateboarding! Motorbikes are fine though?

image hosted on flickr

Up the end we see what Docklands once was. What shall be here in five years time?

image hosted on flickr

This is all here now.

A few interesting things to note in these next two pictures. Firstly are the retained warf sheds, now housing bars and function rooms. Secondly is the NAB building, representing the eco-friendly developments in Docklands with it's five star energy rating (the under construction ANZ building will have a six star rating). And thirdly is the cow up a tree sculpture. One of our city's modern icons and now commisioned for other cities around the world.

Why use four wheels when you can use two?

image hosted on flickr

Green space hasn't been forgotten in Docklands race to the future.

And that's that!

OMG I am in love!!!

My dogs would love to have Brandy as a little pet!!

When friends from Australia come to visit me, they had better come heavily loaded with Cherry Ripe chocolate bars, or they may as well turn right back at the airport!

Yes - and when friends from Canada visit me, they must be loaded down with sachets of shake'n'bake, and boxes of Turtles!

Eureka & Southbank

As insinuated before, here's a little something on the Eureka Skydeck and it's locale.

The new Eureka Skydeck (opened about three months ago) is the highest observation deck in the southern hemisphere, at over 280 metres. It has overtaken the Rialto observation deck (also in Melbourne) for this title. However it comes a poor second to it's older sister in relation to the views you get. The glass is ultra glary and reflective and dissalows the taking of crisp photographs. It only has one open-air area, and this is surrounded by a very tight weave mesh, too tight to fit a camera lens through. It's still worth a look though, as the views are spectacular, the multimedia displays interesting (and maybe a little tacky), and the glass cube a thrilling experience (or so I'm told).

I went up last Saturday to avoid the footy grand final crowds.

That's the Rialto there, to the right of frame.

Afterwards I ambled down to Southbank with my girlfriend and enjoyed a beautiful risotto at one of it's many restaraunts. Southbank is another of Melbourne's urban revival developments (see Docklands above for Melbourne's latest of these), and has really encouraged an engagement with the river Yarra.

It's amazing what difference a few hours can make. Here's what the Camberwell market looks like when you turn up at around 10:00am instead of 12:30pm.

Which city is next on your list for gambolling? (such a great word and you
deserve a medal for resurrecting it!)

Gappa, your shots are awesome, keep um coming man. I love the 'bourne. Ah the yoots (not sure on spelling), the Crown Casino, the Olympic stadium. Hey is 'Metro' nightclub still around. Still have that freaky robot arm with theflashing lights. Its amazing how much these shots remind me of TO. There's gotta be some competition to see the two most similar cities in the world or something because TO and Melbourne would be right near the top...

No kidding! Ive always held this view since I went to Parry Sound, Ontario in the late 90's on a high school exchange. I visited Toronto various times that year and it had a striking resembelence in the inner city areas, Lake Ontario is similar to Port Phillip Bay in regards to the way it halves the city. Despite Melbourne being Australia's second largest city (however, we are the fastest growing), Canada's largest has more in common with Melb than it does with our largest city, Sydney.

It is a great word, as I speak (type) a bunch of poddy calves are doing just that outside my window.

As for which city, I have no short-term travel plans at the moment; only Canada this year. Hopefully I'll get to Asia or maybe some of the Pacific Islands next year. Of course there are many beautiful Australian cities I may photo journal soon, as well as continuing on with Marvellous Melbourne.

I believe the 'Metro' has closed, but am not 100% sure. The building is certainly still there - will try to get a photo next time I'm in the area. Melb and TO are two peas in a pod if you ask me; Montreal also has many similarities.

"[T]he yoots", what's that?
