Thanks guys. Ali here's a list of what I want to 'tour' next:

Melbourne's theatres for TallerBetter. (Hopefully with some interior shots, I'm going to a show at the Comedy in December and to one in the Forum in January)
StKilda for Alibaba.
The inner-north around Brunswick and Gertrude streets.
Wiliamstown.

If you guys would like to see any part of Melbourne I'm happy to do more requests.

Here's something that is very Melbourne - the outside bar! Basically all this is is a $500 liquor licence, an empty lot/ car park, a couple of shipping containers, a few packing pallets, a few milk cartons and a bit of ingenuity. It all equals a funky back alley bar!

I've seen people selling alcohol out of caravans and just over trestle tables. This is part of what makes Melbourne so special.

Here's a few from Southbank.

So anyone can set up a bar in a back alley, or even on their own house lawn if they want? Oh my god that is unbelievably cool.. I'm so jealous. Our liquour laws here are way too strict for that to ever happen!

Well no, you still need council approval. The cheapness of our liquor licences however makes it easy, and our liquor laws are also quite liberal, especially compared to other Aussie states....and Ontario.

How do they deal with health issues such as washrooms, and hot water to wash glasses, etc..?

washrooms? Well! Melbourne is known for its 'hidden alleyways' with 'hidden suprises'.........

seriously though, they just manage. it works well.
hometown bias aside, Melbourne has one of the most lively, and unique nightlifes/social scenes in the World. Or at least what ive seen (majority of Europe, NA and some of Asia)

LOL! I've used a few alleyways in lieu of bursting a bladder as well!
In Canada they would never under any circumstance allow a bar in an alleyway without proper hot/cold water, drainage, access to loos, etc.
That is such a cool thing to allow bars in places like alleyways and parking lots!
Just one more reason to visit Melbourne.....

Not quite sure actually. I know a lot of places have a small room in an adjacent building that they use as a kitchen etc; but there are some that do not. I'll try and find out that mystery....

Justin Timberlake and his girl Jessica Biel just dined at your favourite breakfast cafe this week. I had no idea you were in with the A crowd Ali, although I can see how they'd want to be your friend!

Very cool idea. There are too many rules for owning a bar here. You can have a patio (and a lot of them look exactly the same as those in your photos) but it must be on the property of the original bar or restaurant. There is no way a bar could pop up in an alley or a parking lot. Smoooth idea!

So Boston is OK but a city some 200km south is different to draw comparisons to?

So get this.. last night, someone in Skybar put me onto a YouTube link that has the entire new episode (in two parts) of Kath and Kim from Channel 7 posted, so naturally I watched every YouTube clip just before going to bed. That, combined with looking at your pictures all the time gave me this bizarre dream that I was visiting Melbourne!! LOL!

Also saw a hilarious YouTube clip of Dame Edna, in Melbourne, interviewing the organizers of the travelling "Little Britain" show!

Kath & Kim is the parody of OUTER suburb dwellers
i am talking about suburbs/areas of well over 45/50 kms away from city/downtown

(remember -even you dont do suburbs in Toronto)

so it is not showing the typical of Melbourne landscape

so yeah - take that info when you see some images of Melb from that comedy series.....

the areas they live (Narra warren/Fountain Gate) are deemed undersireable (& much much affordable) relativey to the leafy and more tasteful/smarter inner suburbs

just to give you example - a small vacant land (15 x 20 metres size) in say Canterburry (7kms from city) was sold for $1.8 millions - and for same moneys you can buy 4 or even 5 big McMansions in Narre warren

I know it is a parody of suburban life, but it is so internationally true and so damned funny. The suburbs they show are similar to some here, too. I love the show for the writing the acting and the humour, but I realize it is not typical of Melbourne life!
