To be honest, i think that is a very bad argument. The supertall section will be crowded anyway even if its a 500m limit, just like the highrise section is. That can be solved with some organisation such as the linkthreads.
The issue is about if a new category should be introduced generally for skyscrapers and why.

Again, i dont think a 200m increase is enough to justify a new category, it simply isnt enough of a difference. Honestly im not convinced 600m is enough either. Further though, i do support another category as a matter, becouse it will help organisation, description and such. And id call it Ultratall.

As someone else mentioned, an SI defined unit such as Mega should not be used as it implies its a million of something tall. Ultra is merely a visual remark.

Excellent point. I agree that we should avoid using metric prefixes. Hypertall and Ultratall make more sense.

1000m-1499m...Hypertall Skyscraper
1500m+...........Ultratall Skyscraper

anything over 300m is considered a skyscraper

But for the forum sections...

0m-299m..highrises
300m-599m...Skyscrapers
600m-999m...Supertalls
1000m+........Megatalls

Although the 300m was considered the benchmark height before, during the 20th century
the 500m was cracked. before I would have considered from 400m to the Taipei 101 as a supertall,
the old target of the highest.

Now with the construction of the Burj Dubai, and the amazing amount of skyscraper
planning and construction, the next level should show the split from the old to the new. I would
say 500m but Taipei 101 should be in the older section. Therfore since 510m would not work,
600m is my vote for the new section. 300m (approx 1000ft) to 600m (approx 2000ft).

If one is worried about the lack of 600m+ buildings for this section,
then wait, it will fill up soon.
I dont know where you get your number from but according to Emporis anything over 12 floors and at a certain height is a skyscraper by definition.

The limits are not set in relation to other buildings but in relation to human beings and our perspective. In other words it doesnt matter how many buildings there are currently in an certain heightspan.

agreed 500 Meters makes the most sense.

Ive this definition:

0m-19m = Lowrise
20m -49m = Midrise
50m-149m = Highrise
150m - 299m = Skyscraper
300m - 599m = Supertall
600m - 999m = Megatall
1000 - 1999m = Ultratall
2000m or more = Gigatall
