another thing to remember is if we do agree with 600m for a megatall, the new section will be hardly worth creating as there would only be a handful of projects.

Eureka!

Thats totally lacks logic. First of all skyscraper scopes all buildings from 12 floors and upp. Then we have supertall skyscraper, highrise skyscraper etc.

Secondly using the SI units (at those values) is totally irrational and misleading. When you think of a word like Ultra (meaning "to the utmost/utmostly") it is a relative, describing word. Using a word like Mega or Giga generates a value in most peoples minds.

500m is not tall, it's a small hill. A mountain is 1500m. That's tall.

Megatall is a bad porn movie.

Hypertall is 10km. or 100km.

The categories should be like this:
50 m = Highrise
180 m = skyscraper
400 m = Supertall
600 m = Megatall
800 m = Hypertall
1200 m and over= Ultratall

who is with me?

If u really want megatall then in my opinion it would start from 700-800m and rest propositions for ultra giga tera or other talls leave for the future.

but if we are going to have a subforum 600 meters is not the right answer, since there are only 3 towers of that height (CS, BD,RT) 500 meters would be perfect..

I think 600m+ is a must. Like others have said, thread crowding is hardly a reason to put the number at 500m+. When we think of a new term like megatall I think most people see something new and innovative.

Taipei 101 is one structure where an argument could be made, but I don't think many people would want to see the Sears Tower being classified as a megatall. The issue of spire height will really come into play if the bar is set at 500m+.

But yeah, I don't see why a tower already constructed should be switched to another category.

Leave that to the 600m ones which are being built.

The way I see it, I would probably consider it through a historical perspective. What matters to me is the buildings or structures which succeeded to reach heights which couldn't be imagined as buildable before.

By the end of the 19th century, when the Eiffel tower has been built, it was the first structure ever to exceed 300 meters. More than that, it was twice taller than anything built before. This was simply a height which was considered then as out of this world, and when we started to build actual buildings this height (Chrysler Building, Empire State Building), it has been really felt as reaching a whole new scale.

I guess that to determine a megatall, we should see it this way: a building reaching a height which couldn't be imagined before. And I must confess that Taipei101 hasn't given me such a feeling. I would put it in the same category as the Sears tower or the Petronas twins. The only building which does feel to me as reaching a new scale is the Burj Dubai. I'm not totally a fan of that building (or even the city where it's built), but it's tough to deny this thing is a monster reaching another level.

For this reason, I'm very uncomfortable to consider 500 meters as the good limit to determine a megatall. I indeed believe that 600 meters make more sense, as it's a height which really dwarfens all the former "world's tallests" from the past century.

So my pick to that poll is 600 meters.

I say 500m because too few would be in the 600m category, and it would be boring.

yes i tend to agree. maybe 600m+ wi be a good height for a megatall in 20 years time but for now we can use 500m+. we can change you know. its not in concrete. although poll suggest overwhelmingly 60-30% for 600m, matbe we may have to wait for that.
if we have 500m we can start the new forum, but if everyone wants 600m, then forget i even started this thread.lol

Dude a mountain is defined as any hill that exceed 600m in height above surrounding plain

Think again, why many choose 600m

If natural geography has also change its category on landform above 600m, why not for man made? I mean a new category like megatall with that minimal height equal to the requirement to be a mountain.
