So what does everyone think? if we increase supertall height what are bldgs called that range from 300-400m/ superwannabees?
let me know and we;ll create a 400m+ supertall section and transfer relevant threads.
maybe we will forget about megatall section for now (600m+) and wait a few years until we have enough numbers to create that section?
So should i create a poll- Should we increase height to 400m+ for Supertalls?
and see how we all vote?
when i count right we've 9-10 600m + projects...not all UC but still projects

400 m = Super
600 m = Mega
1000 m = Hyper

the previous category is 150 m for skyscrapers
so the difference between 400 - 150 is 250
the difference betweeen 600 - 400 is 200
the second difference should NOT be smaller than the first one.

If you make 500m for megatalls we'll probably have a strange situation in Europe when Federation Tower becomes a megatall and we won't have any supertalls in whole Europe.

I would propose:

Lowrise <75m
Highrise 76-150m
Skycraper 151-500m (pretty much all the 'classic skycrapers' such as Sears Tower, Petronas Towers etc.)
Supertall 501-750m
Megatall >751m

(Kind of reminds me of S-M-L-XL-XXL-XXXL...)

if we have 500m we can start the new forum, but if everyone wants 600m, then forget i even started this thread.lol
Then i suggest we stick to the current categories. They at least make sense. A new category at 200 m higher than 300 does not.

And it's sad how many people here don't understand that a skyscraper is a skyscraper no matter what subcategory.

P.S. If the new category is called mega and despite this has nothing to do with a million, il give the international bureau of weights and measures a call, and i can assure you forumites, you have my honest word, there will be a revolt unprecedented in anthropological era. The scientific community will be in danger, dont risk that.

Agree with Brad on the difference issue.

...and 3 more in Moscow

Anyway, I believe that 600+ is a good figure. We can not to make a new megatall section so far but just stick that 600+ towers are in fact under construction. By the end of this year we will have just four of them.

with 600m+, it might have a slow start, but with the time it will have much more activity.

Culwulla,

I think it is still too early to divide this section. I know this started due to the discussions you guys have on Burj Dubai thread which is an exceptional building and true class of its own. That's why its on a "Sticky". But in my opinion, its better if we just keep it like this until we get like 10 - 15 megatalls (+600m) which the prediction will be in 5 - 10 years. Right now, its too complicated because Europeans are still starting to plan / build +300m, Middle East still looking on how Dubai will succeed, and Asian countries, Latin and South American countries are still in a process of developing highrises and supertalls.

If we start to have section of Megatalls, the only countries or cities that will benefit on this section will be United States (specifically NYC and Chicago), China, Russia and UAE (specifically Dubai, AD is still starting). Plus, with the on-going world financial crisis, I am very sure the plans and proposals of new skyscrapers will slow down or it will come to a "gradual" halt. So it's better to be safe for now or be sorry later to the users who can't contribute to this "Megatall Section".

500m+ should be the new category.

It makes perfect sense

I would propose:

Supertall: 1000(ft) = ca. 300(m)
Megatall: 1500(ft) = ca. 460(m)

No, it doesn't

That is only for me of course, but still there is no reason why it make "perfect" sense

however for 600m it does make sense, because any building that reaches a mountain height should really belong to a new category, as i mentioned before earlier.

Plus maybe you didn't realised, a 600m would hav an near exact drop of 4 Degree C of temperature from top to bottom for atmosphere located in equator. This may sound like a moot point, but its just give more approriate reason why 600m is better

i agree with you, it's just that a section for only 600 m buildings will be boring, because there are so few of them atm

we are not discussing forum sections... we are discussing how high the buildings are... that's what people have to focus on...
