I'm sure it will do no ends to boost the retail profile of Bristol.

Excellent piccies Helium! I was there today and what a bustling place it was! I've used your photos in my 2DAY IN BRISTOL thread too, I hope you don't mind. If anyone else wants to post pictures of the new Cabot Circus in there - please do.

Looks great. And the Cabot Gate video is very classy...
I hope to get down there for a wee look next tuesday. I know the focus has been on CC today, and rightly so, but just thought i'd mention how quickly Temple quay central is coming along. Haven't any photos I'm afraid, but the main buildings are up to level 5 already, whilst the apartment tower looks set give give a speedy chase. |

ah forgot all about TQ Schmeek its a bit Circus crazy today
![]() The strange thing about CC is that one of the top things that's impressed me about it is the brick work on certain parts (the horsefair bit, top level balcony) of the centre, it's not that dull monotmonous brick, it actually has some depth and texture to it! But what i'm most pleased about is the redeveloped Quakers Friars, it's great! especially after having to live with seeing it as a dodgy carpark (i'm also quite shocked at how huge that tree by Harvey Nichs is, when you visit Schmeek or anyone who hasn't yet you'll see what I mean )

Hi, my first post :P
I was reading a few old pages on Bristol - does anyone know if the redevelopment of the Norwich Union building on Victoria Street is going ahead? |

Hello Matt,
I believe the building on Victoria St is still awaiting planning permission and I would imagine would require a pre-let before construction started. In the current climate unless the building is already under construction I don't think we will see any speculative developments. Glassfields and Temple House on Temple Way have already ground to a halt. |

Bristol's newest bridge finally has a name
BRISTOL'S newest bridge is to be named Meads Reach.Evening Post competition winner Delia Crozier, from Knowle, chose the winning name for the structure which spans the Floating Harbour near Temple Meads station. The name was chosen from the hundreds of entries we received, with the runner-up being William McQuaid, also from Knowle, for his suggestion the Silver Streak Bridge. Developers Castlemore will officially name the bridge on Friday at a launch event at the site of the Temple Quay building project. Mrs Crozier said she was pleased to be part of Bristol's cultural history after hearing her entry had won the competition. The stainless steel Meads Reach bridge cost £2.4 million to build. It is 55 metres long, weighs 75 tonnes and stretches from the car park to the new housing and offices being built in St Philip's. It is part of the £200m Temple Quay development and is just along the water from the Valentine Bridge, which is due to reopen in January 2010 once building work in finished. Mrs Crozier, 67, who came up with the Meads Reach name with her husband Michael, 71, won £650 of Halfords vouchers as well as having the honour of naming the bridge. She said: "My husband used to work on the docks so it's nice to have a bridge over the Harbourside which we chose the name for. "We were absolutely amazed to have been chosen as the winners, although we thought it was a good name. "It's great to be part of the cultural fabric of the city." Lara Darby judged the competition for Castlemore alongside Evening Post editor Mike Norton and city councillor Terry Cook. She said: "We felt that Meads Reach captured the historical significance the bridge has within the area and the future access it will provide for commuters and the city of Bristol." The bridge will also form part of the national cyclepath network, acting as an extension of the track to Bath which runs through the western part of Bristol. |

I'm dragging myself away from my Cabot Circus excitement (which has REALLY impressed me over my few visits) for a second to bring an interesting photo update.
While technicially not Bristol urbania as such, I thought you guys would like to see the following. The six architects charged with presenting ideas for the reconstruction of Weston pier have today published their renders. Personally, I really like them all - it seems a "faithful" reconstruction of the old Victorian Pavilion isn't going to happen. I like these modern designs... ![]() ![]() My personal favourite - I really like the "green" element, and the monorail... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The new pier is planned (and hoped) to be open for Summer 2010.... (edit - on further viewing, I hadn't noticed the artistic licence taken with the rather tropical looking sea!!!) |

Interesting designs ... it seems that most of them like their Quiet Revolution wind turbines too (I am a bit of a fan
). Thanks for posting them up.

I see the cardiff forum is putting down our cabot circus allready. Saying that st davids will be so much better than cabot circus. I wondered how long it would be before they started. Just a shame they will have no stores to open up in st davids 2 what with the present climate!

Ah it's only Cabot Circus!
It's too early to decide what my opinion on SD2 is or what'll happen to the retailers in the next year (and anything negative that happens over there is just as likely to happen here too)... But from what i've seen i'm not too fussed about it yet as it doesn't seem to add much to Cardiff as say CC, L1, Princesshays or (what was the one I was really looking foward to) the postponed/cancelled Sevenstone development in Sheffield although I think the Moor St area develeopment has the go ahead) have done for their respective cities. Just another mall (by comparison ) plonked in the middle of town that adds to SD1 essentially making central-central cardiff even more of a big concrete plug, hope i'm wrong though. However the Hill street area looks like it's going to be very quakers friarish though which is good.As for Bristol, I hope they hurry up with the Bridewell and Nelson street development(s)!

Discussion about Weston Pier is on the Weston Tropicana thread - which needs the title changing!

Some other News, Clifton Lido is due to reopen in November 2008.
The 19th century Clifton Victoria Baths in Bristol, one of the oldest Grade II-listed swimming pools in the UK, will reopen in following an extensive £2m restoration, which began October 2006. The Lido will be operated by Bristol-based restaurant group the Glass Boat Company, which has been working with architects Marshall Kendon and English Heritage to upgrade the 9,526sq ft (885sq m) facility. When complete, the Lido will boast a 78ft (24m) outdoor infinity pool, hot tub and a spa and health suite with Victorian tea rooms. Facilities at the spa include a mud room, a salt room, a solarium, two saunas and six treatment rooms as well as a space for relaxation classes. Treatments will use ILA products. The new facility was funded by private investors and partially through a grant from the Low Carbon Trust to fund the development’s green features. This includes solar panels and a waste heat exchange system, which is intended to keep the lido’s carbon footprint to a minimum. Full planning permission was granted for the restoration of the pool and associated buildings in 2006. Details: www.cliftonlido.com |

If you're talking about the site on the corner of Castle Park, that'll be the new Cafe/Cycle Centre (although I hadn't realised they'd actually started construction).
There's pictures of it somewhere in this thread, but I can't be bothered to search through 58 pages to find them...sorry. PJ - might be time to update the very first post again? Move Cabot Circus into 'Completed Projects' and I've noticed you've not got the new Bristol City Stadium listed (but do have the redevelopment of Memorial Ground there). |

The project in question:
I'm assuming this is the reason why there's been so little spaces for bikes in CC at the moment? Quote:

Apparently Bristol Zoo have just submitted a planning application for their new Eco Park to the north of Bristol.
The Evening Post has just emailed me this but the link in the email to the story actually goes to a completely different story and there's nothing on their website yet - so I assume they're still updating it. Also, the EP reports that there's been over 1m people in Cabot Circus already since it opened 2 weeks ago and shops are reporting that they've exceeding their expectations of sales since opening. Oh, and yesterday there was a bit of a non story in the paper where they said that Filton could possibly be developed as a commercial airport because in some document (Aviation White Paper I think) it's given the same importance as Bristol International. However, it also mentions that general planning laws and safety would mean that it'll probably be actually ruled out - unless they decided to buy everyone's homes in the area and bulldoze them. |
