Fantastic looking plane, on par with Concorde.

Been down to Portsmouth over the last few days to see Victory and Warrior. Was lucky enough to see Daring and Dauntless at port, they looked fabulous, especially from the spinnaker tower's top floor, and from the deck of Nelson's flagship.

On the last day we went inside the submarine HMS Alliance and I'd highly recommend it to any military fan.

Some photos of the new British camouflage (to the left not the suit). Multi Terrain Pattern. The soldier is also wearing the interim mark 7 helmet (off the shelf American design) now issued to UK operational troops in Afghanistan. This will be replaced by a truly all new helmet, the Mark 8 sometime in the next few years hopefully. He sports the new Osprey Assault Armour as well as latest optics and eye protection.

It is a derivative of the commercial MultiCam pattern. The United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence announced that HM Forces would be issued with the new military uniform for operations in Afghanistan; initially issued to personnel deployed on Operation Herrick from March 2010, then issued more widely to HM Forces from 2011. MTP will exclusively replace woodland DPM camouflage with specialist desert and arctic uniforms retained.

Strangely, in 1979, there was a brief attempt to revive the TSR.2 programme, with a private company looking at possible modifications to bring it up to date (square intakes with variable ramps like Concorde, modern electronics, Olympus 593 engines as per Concorde and so on) and badgering government and RAF departments with letters about resurrecting the aircraft. As they suggested using XR220 and XR222 as prototypes for this 'new' TSR.2 and the Tornado was not far away from flying, it was frankly no wonder that this idea went nowhere.

As it turned out, the Tornado became more or less what the TSR.2 was to have been. That it was still slightly less capable in some areas than the TSR.2 had been projected to be a full fifteen years earlier says a great deal about how far advanced the TSR.2 project really was. That the TSR.2 was all-British (bar some electronics) and the Tornado required the cooperation of three countries also says a great deal about just how good the British aircraft industry was. TSR.2 would not have been perfect - but it still could have been a world-beater.

yes. and what was most outrageous was the order to actually destroy the research and so on that had go into the TSR2 so the project couldn't be resurrected in the sixties. some of it was saved and ended up in the tornado but the idea that a huge amount of white hot technical research gets trashed like that is nothing short of perverse. what other country would do such a thing?

it ranks up there with the destruction of bletchley park after world war 2 that ruined years and years of british computer research and working technology forcing us to start again from scratch meaning that our four lead was destroyed, the americans were able to build ENIAC and we had to catch up again as alan turing retraced all his earlier work.
