Treasure Islands
CHARMAINE BAYLON GOES IN SEARCH OF IDYLLIC STRETCHES OF PARADISE, AND CHANCES UPON FIVE HEAVENLY ISLES Boracay’s party atmosphere recalls Ibiza while its soft-as-sifted flour white sands call to mind the Maldives. But even Google-savvy people in search of the perfect beach don’t realize there remain other beautiful Philippine islands yet to be discovered. While not as famous as Boracay, they wield their own holiday charms. Just choose one and go… Sumilon island, Cebu The buzz This 24-hectare island is located at the southeastern tip of Cebu and run by the Sumilon Bluewater Island Resort. The country’s first marine-protected area boasts blue-green waters, thriving coral reefs and schools of colorful fish. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of black-tip sharks while on a deep sea dive. Island treasures You’ll find a sandbar that changes and shifts depending on the seasons. Interesting dive spots include Nikki’s Wall and Julie’s Rock. Not into scuba diving? Hop on a glass bottom boat to see the marine life while staying dry. Also check out the picturesque lighthouse in the middle of the tree park and the baluarte – a 19th century watchtower. Must-do Have the Sumilon breakfast of fish, salted egg, rice and fried bananas to give you energy for activities like snorkeling, windsurfing, scuba diving, kayaking, trekking and fishing in the lagoon. You can order Filipino dishes at the payag-payag or bamboo gazebo for lunch, or you can have afternoon tea outside your room. End the day with a cozy dinner for two on the sandbar; the staff will light you a bonfire, serve you wine and even serenade you. Where to stay Sumilon Bluewater Island Resort features only eight cottages with two rooms each. You get two queen-size beds, a spacious bathroom and a veranda where you can enjoy views of the sea, cove and mainland Cebu. Travel tips Bring along aqua socks for swimming and walking along the beach (which can be rocky), and sturdy footwear for trekking. Contact Sumilon Bluewater Island Resort, Bancogon, Oslob, Cebu, tel: +63 (32) 481 0800/01. Manila Office: Room 1918, Cityland/Herrera Tower, 98 Herrera, Salcedo Village, Makati, tel: +63 (02) 817 5751/1348, sumilonreservations@bluewater.com.ph, www.bluewater.com.ph Pagudpud Ilocos Norte The buzz Pagudpud, on the northwestern tip of Ilocos Norte, is said to be the largest island in the Philippines. Unlike Boracay, it’s much quieter here. Expect to fall in love with the unspoilt beaches and postcard pretty nature scenes. Island treasures Check out Maira-ira Cove aka the Blue Lagoon in Sitio Malingay for its shimmery blue waters and baby waves for newbie surfers; the 12km Patapat Bridge, which has been dubbed the French Riviera of the North; Pasaleng Bay, where a Japanese vessel was shipwrecked; and Kabigan Falls, fresh water that cascades from 120 feet up. Must-do Surf the world-class swells of Sitio Baniaran, which fronts Kapuluan Vista Resort — learn from owners Mike and Alma Oida. The best time to go is from July to October. Snorkel, dive, swim and kayak in Blue Lagoon. Amihan (November to March) is kitesurf and windsurf season. Where to stay Rent huts near Blue Lagoon for PHP200. Otherwise, check into Kapuluan Vista Resort for family-style loft rooms and organic food. Saud Beach Resort is Pagudpud’s oldest resort, close to the island’s attractions. Travel tips Bring a Smart cell phone or pre-paid card so you can stay in touch. Contact Kapuluan Vista Resort, tel. +63 (920) 952 2528, www.tjhawaii.com/kvr. Saud Beach Resort, www.saudbeachresort.com Caramoan Islands, Camarines Sur The buzz The Camarines Sur provincial government is currently promoting 12 out of over 50 islands in the Caramoan peninsula. These islands have been receiving a lot of attention overseas not just because of their pristine beauty but also because three Survivor reality show franchises recently shot footage in the area. Island treasures If you don’t have time to explore all of the islands, make the following your priority: Visit Pitogo for its uniquely rocky shore. Go to Tayak for its picture-perfect lagoon. Tinago island offers three small, hidden beaches while Matukad has powdery sand and sparkling waters. Finally there are Lahos, which is really two islands separated by a white stretch of hilly sand, and the V-shaped Sabitang Laya which is unexpectedly long. The travel time between isles can take 15 to 45 minutes, however some can take as long as three hours by boat. Must-do You can swim, snorkel, and kayak in the island waters or bike, trek, and camp on the terrain. Nature lovers can also go bird-watching and rock climbing. Where to stay Hunongan cove has 14 pretty cabanas that will be fully operational late this year. Each room is furnished with an iPod dock and a queen-size or double bed, and a bathroom with two rain showers. Sliding doors open up to a porch with a stunning view of the sea and nearby islands. Another option is to check into Gota Village Resort. Travel tips Island-hopping requires comfortable, lightweight clothing and lots of sunscreen. Do make sure to bring a waterproof, water-tight plastic bag (like Ziploc) for your camera, cash and other valuables. Contact CamSur Provincial Tourism Office, tel: +63 (54) 477 3172/477 5252. Their Manila offfice is Unit 2401, 139 Corporate Center, Valero Street, Salcedo Village, Makati, tel: +63 (02) 817 0831, camsurtourism@gmail.com, gotavillage@gmail.com, www.caramoanislands.com, www.gotavillage.com Pamilacan Bohol The buzz Pamilacan comes from the word pilak, which is a large, hooked tool designed to capture manta rays, whale sharks and Bryde’s whales. But the 300 families that live on this island have since given up whale hunting and now work as eco-tour guides for the dolphin and whale watching public. The small, 14-hectare isle only began receiving tourists in 1999, and most beachfront accommodations are very basic (read: the rooms don’t have air-conditioning). Island treasures Pamilacan is surrounded by 14 hectares of powdery white sand with soft and hard corals. A former station that watched guard against pirates, it features the remains of a 200-year-old Spanish fort on the northeastern side. Must-do A skilled guide can take you dolphin and whale watching between 6am to 10am. You may spot sperm and Bryde’s whales between March and June. It’s also fun to visit the village, have lunch by the beach, then swim, snorkel or fish afterwards. Where to stay Pamilacan Paradise Resort, tel: +63 (38) 411 3074/501 7421, soledadsuites@yahoo.com, www.pamilacanislandparadise.com; Pamilacan Tourist Inn and Restaurant, tel: +63 (38) 415 2487/(917) 436 8369/(919) 700 4002 and Pueblo de Pamilacan, tel: +63 (927) 796 7759 Travel tips There are no regular trips to the island, so you’ll need to ask your resort about booking a boat in advance. Contact Jojo Baritua, Pamilacan Island Dolphin and Whale Watching Tours, Poblacion, Baclayon, Bohol, tel: +63 (38) 540 9279/415 2487, pamilacan@yahoo.com, www.whales.bohol.ph Calaguas, Camarines Norte The buzz Under the Vinzons municipality, the Calaguas group of islands, with their clear blue waters and fine white sands, has been referred to as “Boracay 20 years ago.” Island treasures Visit Mahabang Buhangin, the main island, for its isolated 1.4km stretch of white beach. But don’t expect modern amenities and establishments here. Instead, take pleasure in the raw beauty of nature. There are seven picturesque Mercedes islands and they include Apuao Grande, Apuao Pequena, Caringo, Canton, Canimog, Quinapaguian and Malasugui. Each may have a sandbar, a fish sanctuary or a network of underwater caves. Must-do Snorkeling, island hopping, firefly watching and star gazing. Where to stay Book a tour package at Mahabang Buhangin, then all you need to do is pitch a tent for an overnight stay. Travel tips Switch off your mobile as you won’t get a signal, and just relax. Do pack food and bottled water for the trip. Contact Camarines Norte Provincial Tourism Division, tel: +63 (54) 721 3087.
