Wet grinder exports go up

Wet grinder exports go up

Staff Reporter
The Hindu
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The designs are modified to the needs of the buyers

The total project cost is about Rs. 2 crore

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COIMBATORE: Exports of wet grinders from here have gone up during the recent years, according to an official at the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute here.

Design modified

The official said that a number of wet grinder manufacturers were exporting to Sri Lanka, West Asian countries, and even to the U.S. by modifying the design according to the needs of the buyers in these countries.

During the last two years, the manufacturers participated in buyer-seller meeting and food melas organised in the Northern States in the country and also in other countries such as Singapore and Malaysia.

With this the number of exporters had gone up and the market potential increased for the manufacturers here.

Common facility centre

The Coimbatore Wet Grinder and Accessories Manufacturers Association were in the process of setting up a common facility centre for its members with assistance under the cluster programme.

The programme was implemented by the development institute.

Awaiting assistance

It had built the required infrastructure and was awaiting assistance from the Centre and State Governments to purchase machinery.

Improve production

The total project cost for the common facility centre was about Rs. 2 crore and the units would get Rs. 1 crore subsidy from the Centre and Rs. 15 lakh from the State Government.

The centre would help improve production and increase the market potential for these products.

National award

A release from the institute said Ponmani Industries here was selected for the National Award for Quality Products, given away by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, in the Electric Wet Grinder Group for this year.

Brand CBE.....by looking at this initiation by Silk Air, Srilankan Airlines and their involvement..Indian govt. airliners ......either Air India or AIE would add CBE to their network so as to compete with these international airliners........anyway CBE - sharjah - CBE sector has got Indian to compete with Air Arabia......

Soon we could be able to see Air India, AIE in CBE....

Corridors of excellence for inclusive growth

CHENNAI: The State government is creating “corridors of excellence” all over Tamil Nadu to achieve inclusive growth. The initiatives are expected to take off within a month.

Talking to The Hindu on Monday on the sidelines of Connect 2007, Industries Secretary Shaktikanta Das said: “We are committed to developing every region in Tamil Nadu and not those located in and around Sriperumbudur. We are creating corridors of excellence in three phases. The first one runs from Chennai to Hosur through Vellore. The second one stretches from Coimbatore to Erode and between Madurai and Tuticorin.”

“The first stage involves setting up of IT and industrial parks, followed by creation of other infrastructure. It would take at least three-five years to realise the benefits. As of now, the project is going on the right track. The setting up of SEZ in Virudhunagar is meant to spread the growth throughout the Madurai-Tuticorin region,” he said.

Chief Secretary L. K. Tripathy said the government was taking a number of initiatives to develop Tier-II cities.

“Developing Tier-II cities does not mean creating IT hubs alone; we will create an eco-system for proper functioning of the automobiles, garments and leather and textile sectors. Madurai and Coimbatore is ready for take-off. Within a month, bhoomi puja will be held in other cities, including Salem and Tiruchi. Thereafter, the project will be flagged off,” he said.

Land on offer

Government agencies have started offering land to Taiwanese entrepreneurs within a radius of 100 km in the city.

New Delhi: Delhi and Greater Mumbai have been ranked as the leading cities in India in terms of the growth potential for economic and social development, according to a rating of 48 Indian cities by consultant Ernst & Young. The firm developed a rating methodology that assesses several cities on their potential for economic, urban and social development.
“The traditional method of evaluating city potential on the basis of limited parameters, such as population and per capital income, has outlived its utility,” claimed Ganesh Raj, partner and head of real estate practice at E&Y.
Evaluated on five indices, including prosperity, governance, business environment, infrastructure and quality of life, the rating ranks the cities, all of which are covered by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
According to a summary of the report, Delhi and Greater Mumbai have been ranked A++, while Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata are A+ cities. Pune and Ahmedabad get an A.
Surat, Chandigarh, Nagpur, Vadodara, Vishakapatnam and Jaipur get B++ cities ranking. Coimbatore, Lucknow, Bhopal figure in the list of B cities while Madurai, Patna and Srinagar have been categorized as C cities. Delhi is the leader in the infrastructure index with Chennai and Hyderabad faring well. Visakhapatnam and Nagpur have been ranked highly on both business environment and infrastructure index.
The Ficci-Ernst&Young report also undertook a survey of leading investors that suggested they believe that more than $5 billion would be deployed into Indian real estate over the next three years, with 20% saying the deployment would be over $20 billion.
Close to 80% of the respondents believe that in the short to mid-term (three to five years), India as an investment destination is ‘excellent´ or ‘very good´ compared with other Asian markets such as China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.
Also, more than 50% of respondents believe that high growth trajectory (year-on-year growth of 25%) would continue for the next two to three years.

Erode hails decision on Corporation

Staff Reporter

ERODE: The town’s reaction to the Chief Minister’s announcement on upgrading Erode Municipality to a Corporation has been widely welcomed. Many said it would give a boost to infrastructure development.

Head of Makkal Sindhanai Peravai T. Stalin Gunasekaran said projects like the two proposed flyovers - one at Government Hospital junction and other at Paneerselvam Park junction - that hitherto remained on paper would have greater chances of implementation.

There would be benefits on the policing front as well, he added. “With the town becoming a police commissionerate and getting additional force, traffic can be better managed.”One obvious fallout of the announcement is the escalation of land prices. But will that lead to a boom in housing or construction industry? C. Devarajan of URC Constructions said there would be a lot of cement and brick work, say a new Corporation stadium.

While welcoming the decision, Mr. Devarajan said the announcement should be leveraged to the best by local leaders who should really rise up to the occasion.

As for the benefits the industry would draw out of the decision, R. Mylsami, vice-president, Erode District Small Industries Association, said though there might not be direct benefits, the infrastructure development might help the industry grow.

He also pointed to the increased city compensatory allowance and house rent allowance to employees would receive as one of the benefits. Along with the benefits come a few important issues. Sources in the Erode Municipality said it remained to be seen how the town would be upgraded.

For, integration of the Municipality with neighbouring civic bodies would raise issues like size of wards, creation of zones, status of councillors of integrated civic bodies vis-a-vis Erode Municipality, etc. The sources added that the one of the problems might be the timing of upgrade to a Corporation.

With elected bodies around, it remains to be when the actual upgrade takes place, for dissolving the elected bodies, which have a fixed term, may not be that easy.

As for the benefits for the local bodies, the sources added that the financially weak ones would stand to benefit the most, as after upgrade to a corporation the areas that hitherto remained neglected would see development works.

Coimbatore soon to have a SUPER LUXURY HOTEL from Puruvankara

Bangalore based Puravankara may not have a very successful listing but that has not deterred the massive expansion the company is planning.

The company is focusing on its hotels divisions and in an exclusive chat with NDTV the company's management reveals that hospitality is where it sees big growth coming from going forward.

"We have some massive expansion plans across some key cities in south India. We have set up a fair amount of our funds debt and capital which we will sink into these investments," said Ravi Ramu, CFO and ED, Puravankara.

Those expansion plans will require well massive funding plans and the company is planning on setting up a SPV for its hotels business and is in advanced talks with a global PE fund to divest between 20-30 per cent of its stake.

The plans will be finalised in the next couple of weeks. While the company is also not ruling out brining in another Private Equity fund at a later stage, it admits that the reason to structure it as a separate company is to eventually list it.

Hospitality majors

Puravankara will invest between Rs 500 crore to Rs 1,000 crore of its own money over the next three years, Cochin will be the first stop with a super luxury hotel, followed by Bangalore, Hyderabad, Coimbatore and Mysore.
The company is also in talks with global hospitality majors including Four Seasons, the Ritz Carlton, Oberoi and the Hilton group to manage its properties.

"Yes of course, we don't intend to operate these hotels ourselves, we want to get it done by the best operators and we are talking to the best operators around the world," Ravi Ramu said.

The company foresees that the next wave of growth will come from tier II towns and is focusing heavily in this area for future growth.

Development Credit Bank set to expand in South

BANGALORE: Development Credit Bank (DCB), having made a turnaround with a modest profit of Rs. 5.70 crore in the first quarter of 2007, is set to expand its presence in the South, till now mostly concentrated in Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the bank’s fourth branch in Bangalore, Managing Director and CEO, Gautam Vir, said “Our IP earlier this calendar year netted us Rs. 190 crore and we recently received fresh capital infusion of Rs. 280 crore from various investors, including the Tatas, the Royal Family of Abu Dhabi and Lehmann Brothers, Mauritius. The net worth of DCB now stands at Rs. 570 crore and NPAs have come down from 4.5 per cent to 1.58 per cent this quarter”.

DCB is increasingly looking at expanding its presence in the South, going beyond the larger cities like Bangalore and Chennai to smaller but business-rich cities such as Coimbatore, Tirupur, Salem and Mysore, Mr. Vir said. “We will look at growing our business with mid-sized enterprises with a capital base of Rs. 500 crore and below along with retail products. Bangalore itself is promising because of its high income levels.

Maersk to re-start direct operation in Coimbatore

Coimbatore, Sept. 20 Given the growing international cargo to and from Coimbatore, Maersk Line, the international ocean liner shipping company of A P Moller-Maersk Group, is re-starting its direct operation out of the city from this month.

The group’s Indian arm, Maersk India Pvt Ltd is putting up its Coimbatore office, a 4,000-sq ft space rented out on the arterial Tiruchi Road, which is expected to be formally commissioned on September 24, the local cargo industry/shipping agencies sources said.

Franchise Operation

Maersk Line in Coimbatore has hitherto been represented by Aspinwall and company’s shipping agency division.

With Maersk deciding to have its own operation, Aspinwall would now be allowed the franchise operation for Safmarine, another international liner company belonging to the A P Moller-Maersk, the sources added.

With a view to consolidating its trade from this industrial region, Maersk India is merging its company-owned business unit—presently functioning at the hosiery exporting town of Tirupur—with its new Coimbatore outfit.

Software Exports

CBE started performing in IT, it's very clear that we are the second IT city in TN next to Chennai

New Delhi, Sept. 19 The Union Minister of State for Commerce, Mr Jairam Ramesh, has expressed his concern over the uneven spread of IT industry in generating employment and revenues across different states.

Addressing the executive board meeting of Nasscom on Wednesday, he said of the total exports of about $32 billion last year, seven cities namely Bangalore, National Capital Region, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Navi Mumbai and Kolkata accounted for 95 per cent. Whereas another seven cities including Mysore, Bhubaneswar, Mangalore, Jaipur, Gandhinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram, totally contributed 3 per cent.

While certain cities such as Indore, Kochi, Vishakhapatnam and Coimbatore contributed to about 0.6 per cent of software exports, certain cities did not contribute at all to the country’s overall exports.

He citied that the Software Technology Park of India (STPI), Bangalore centre, with Rs 47,250 crore continued to lead in exports, followed by NCR at Rs 22,357 crore and Chennai and Hyderbad at Rs 19,867 crore and 18,294 crore, respectively, adding that wide disparities in terms of contribution from various STPIs across the country continued to exist.

Although he acknowledged that infrastructure and education were the various factors that governed business decisions, he urged the industry to spread out in under-served regions and areas.

Address by Minister of State for Commerce, Mr Jairam Ramesh to NASSCOM Executive Board (pdf)

Zeta to Open Altec Demo Centers

In tune with Altec Lansing's catch phrase 'Just listen to this', Zeta Technologies plans to open demo centers for Altec products across the country where customers can experience the products.

The company intends to have at least 32 demo centers in all the A and B class cities, along with the metros. To begin with, the company has finalized two centers in Mumbai, where it plans to have about six to seven of them. Zeta plans to open these centers with its existing set of partners and a few new ones.

Tejas Sheth, general manager, Zeta Technologies, said, "As of now, we are the only distributors of Altec to come out with this initiative. We feel that the greatest USP of Altec Lansing products is the product itself. So we want to create an environment where the customer can have a first-hand experience of the products."

He added, "We plan to have at least two to three centers in all major cities like Chennai, Bangalore, New Delhi etc. and one each in smaller cities like Coimbatore, Madurai and the like."

According to Zeta, Altec Lansing will be its focus in the entertainment segment and is aiming at the number one position in terms of market share in India. To achieve this goal, the company will go aggressive with roadshows, demo outlets and over 30 exhibitions in a year.

Along with Altec, the company also plans to focus on Powercom by coming out with new products and take the number of Master Dealers to approximately 275 from the current number of 125 across the country.
