Brief translation of what the news conveys...

" The Kerala officials are trying to stop the development of Coimbatore Airport into an international airport. Even the Silk Airways from Singapore which should have started its operation from Coimbatore in May was stopped due to the canvassing of Kerala officials. They meet the international airway officers and explain them if they start their operation in Coimbatore it would bring them a loss due to less number of passengers and try to prove them that Cochin and Kozhikode airports would be a much profit reaping destinations for international flights.

NOTE - PROPOSAL REJECTED: Due to the increasing crowds in Coimbatore airpot a proposal was made for the extension of the terminal building such that more people could be seated. But an Indian Airports Authority officer from Kerala who works in Chennai has rejected the proposal. News have started to come as the kerala government officilas are trying to stop the growth of Coimbatore airport by all possible means. Next to the block created by them for the formation of Salem railway Division now it is the turn for Coimbatore Airport.

SOME LEFT OUT POINTS...

It also mentions that only after the coimbatore airport officials showed proofs that there is an increase in the crowd, the income and other developments in Coimbatore airport the Silk Airways was again covinced and then decided to start it operation on 28th of this month. I think the coimbatore aiport aythorities had a hard time to prove that the words of their Kerala counterparts was FALSE.

The news in Tamil has been posted from a tamil daily 'Dinamalar'.

‘DIVINE’ ADVICE: A folk artiste in Lord Vinayaga costume educating motorists on the need for wearing helmets at Lakshmi Mills Junction in Coimbatore on Tuesday as part of the Road Safety Week celebrations. —

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police will soon get a traffic management regulatory system at a cost of Rs. 4 crore wherein traffic flow and violations at nearly 25 signals could be monitored at the police control room, said the Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, C.K. Gandhirajan on Tuesday.

He was talking to reporters after inaugurating Road Safety Week observance along with the Collector, Neeraj Mittal at the Lakshmi Mills Junction on Avanashi Road.

Mr. Gandhirajan and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), S. Manoharan, said that personnel on duty at the control room monitoring the traffic flow would give instructions for remedial measures in the event of traffic congestion.

Similarly, the absence of a police constable at a traffic signal was no guarantee that the offences would go unnoticed.

Violation of traffic signals, stop line at signals would get registered on the camera and the control room would automatically generate notices and send the same to the violator based on the registration number.

Similarly, police officers’ at signals would carry a hand held computer printer hooked to the centralised server. In the event of violations, memos would be served instantly.

Earlier, Mr. Neeraj Mittal inaugurated the celebrations by flagging off two campaign floats of the City Police.

The floats depicted tragic accidents, illustrations on the cause of accidents and the penal provisions for each and every violation besides illustrations of good and bad driving/riding habits.

The floats would visit traffic signals during peak hours to draw the attention of the motorists to refrain from violations.

The Commissioner of Police also handed over reflective jackets and mega phones for policemen. The Collector and Commissioner also inaugurated a new design of traffic umbrella.

The movable umbrella with wheels would have a shelter for protecting the constables from rain and sun. The umbrella would also be used as a barricade for diverting traffic in the event of a need. The umbrella costing around Rs. 20,000 would be provided to most of the road junctions in a phased manner.

Propaganda campaign

The Commissioner along with Deputy Commissioners of Police, P. Sugumar (Law and Order), S.V. Karuppasamy (Head Quarters) and M. Balakrishnan (Armed Reserve) also kick started a propaganda campaign for affixing stickers with accident prevention and safe road habit messages.

Speaking at the function, Mr. Neeraj Mittal said that every effort was being made to improve the three E’s that concerned road safety namely Engineering, Education and Enforcement. With the existing road space, he said that 300 to 400 hundred vehicles were getting added every month. Mr. Gandhirajan sought the cooperation motorists to make Coimbatore City an accident-free city.

The highlight of the observance was folklore artists from Puducherry and Mandya in Karnataka with the costumes of Gods and Goddesses offering advice to motorists on the need to comply with traffic rules.

Artistes with the costumes of bear, ghost and skeletons targeted the violators of stop line, pedestrian crossing and use of cellular phones and failure to wear helmets and made them mend their ways. The officers said that we believe in preaching not penalising.

Plans to ease traffic in Coimbatore City

http://www.hindu.com/2007/10/11/stor...1157560100.htm

Coimbatore: Officials are drawing up long-term and short-term plans to improve road connectivity and traffic management in the city to decongest its arterial roads.

At a meeting of the district level committee attended by District Collector Neeraj Mittal, City Police Commissioner C.K. Gandhirajan, and Corporation Commissioner P. Muthuveeran, proposals for link roads, ring roads, truck terminals and bus terminals were recommended under the Jawarhalal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

Officials of the highways, Corporation, and local planning authority and representatives of various public fora took part.

The short-term proposals include 12 link roads connecting Avanashi Road with 100 Feet Road, Tiruchi Road, Vilankurichi Road, Sathyamangalam Road, Peelamedu Road; and Avarampalayam Road, Brook Bond Road with Mettuppalayam Road. More link roads connecting Tiruchi Road with the airport (via SIHS Colony), Sathyamangalam Road with Mettuppalayam Road, Thadagam Road with Perur Road, and Perur Road with Madukkarai Road have been suggested. The road width will range from 40 to 80 feet.

The long-term plans include five ring roads with width ranging from 40 to 60 to 100 feet. These include one that will connect Nanjundapuram with Singanallur (along the railway line, for which land acquisition needs to be done); an outer ring road connecting L&T bypass road with Mettuppalayam Road at Periyanaickenpalayam; an intermediate ring road connecting NH 47 with Mettuppalayam Road (at Thudialur) via Kalapatti, and a road from Ukkadam connecting Mettuppalayam Road via Selvapuram and Pappanaickenpudur. A road connecting Kuniamuthur with Mettuppalayam Road at Pannimadai meant for outbound traffic is suggested.

Flyovers are proposed at the Lakshmi Mills Junction and Gandhipuram and at railway level crossings at Kurichi, Sanganur 7th Street, Vilankurichi Road, Avarampalayam and the Kikkani School crossing at Ram Nagar. Bus terminals are planned at Thudialur, Kurumbapalayam, Chinniampalayam and Kavundampalayam.

Truck terminals

Truck terminals are suggested at Neelambur, Malumichampatti and Irugur. There will be multi-level parking facilities at Thyagi Kumaran Market, Jail grounds, Uppukinar lane and R.S. Puram. Besides, 12 subways are proposed at road junctions including at railway station, Flower Market and Ganapathy Bus Stand

These 12 Link Roads and 5 Ring Roads seems to be a good proposal. Definitely these will decongest the current traffic in our City. But I am afraid that a lot of land acquisition may be necessary. How are they going to solve those? Increasing the runway length by 1200 feet itself is having land acquisition issues.

Let us hope for the Best and keep our fingers crossed for the successful completion of the new proposals.

Removal of encroachments starts on Nanjundapuram Road for widening the roads

Officials from the State Highways and Revenue Department with the assistance of the police and City Municipal Corporation on Thursday commenced the drive for removing encroachments on either side of Nanjundapuram Road from the Ramanathapuram signal junction.

The District Collector, Neeraj Mittal ordered the implementation of a master plan to remove encroachments and widen all the arterial roads in the City.

A joint survey conducted by the Revenue Department and Highways officials identified about ten roads where encroachments needed to be removed so that widening and strengthening of these roads could be taken up in a phased manner for ensuring smooth flow of traffic.

The meeting conducted for this purpose made it clear that given the increasing vehicular population and traffic density, there was a pertinent need for widening the road space by getting rid of the encroachments that had come up over the years.

The roads identified include: Thadagam Road, Marudhamalai Road and Nanjundapuram Road, to make them into four-lane ones at the earliest.

Highways officials were confident of completing the widening of the Avanashi Road from Neelambur bypass road to Flyover into a six-lane road within a year.

The State Highways had already completed the work in respect of strengthening the road, right from Gandhipuram Junction to Ramanathapuram Junction.

In the next phase, it wanted to widen and strengthen Nanjundapuram Road from Ramanathapuram signal to Podanur Chettipalayam. Once the road was developed, the core city area could be freed from traffic congestion.
This was because a widened Nanjundapuram Road could take a substantial traffic volume on a diversion/bypass mode.

This drive would leave the road wide enough for making adequate carriage way for the increasing vehicular population, so that vehicles bound for Podanur, Sundarapuram, Kurichi, Malumichampatti, Pollachi and Udumalpet could avoid entering the Big Bazar Street and Town Hall areas, officials further said.

On completion of the eviction drive, the authorities were planning to make it into a four lane road with a width of 80 ft at a cost of Rs 95 lakhs.

There is a mistake in the news quote. The runway length mentioned shall be in 'feet' and not 'metres.' The longest runways in the country are in the range of 4000-4500m.

1st green building in Coimbatore

After entering in the Limca Book of Records for being the first pillar-free trade fair complex in the world, Codissia Intec Technology Centre (Cointec) is expected to become the first green building in the city. Cointec president R Palanisamy said the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (Codissia) has proposed to expand the trade fair complex in accordance with the norms of the US Green Building Council. The new building will have environmentfriendly carpets, recycled tiles, wood from certified forests, cement and bricks made of fly-ash, organic or milk-based paints, eco-friendly air-conditioning systems, rainwater harvesting pits and solar heaters. C Muthusami, president, Codissia, told ET: “With increasing enquiries for participation and the Intec fair attracting overseas visitors, we have embarked on a Rs 20-crore expansion plan.

This includes construction of two halls with a built-up space of one lakh sq ft each and a food court on 30,000 sq ft with a seating capacity of 700-800 people”. It is to be funded with a Rs 15-crore loan from the Small Industries Development Bank of India and the balance Rs 9 crore from internal resources. The existing has a world-class building. Giving equal importance to greenery, the association is planning to have saplings over 200 sq m. The expansion is scheduled to be completed by January 2008 so that the new facility would be available for hosting Intec 2008 next February. “Post expansion, we hope to earn scores for our project through the leadership in energy and environmental design rating system developed by US Green Building Council,” he added.

FG Stores will see an addition of eight stores, all of which will be in the shop-in-shop format in Naihaa stores. The company at present has two Mermaid stores in Chennai. It plans to open two new stores – one in Chennai (Anna Nagar) and one in Bangalore.

“That apart, we are also in talks with Spencer’s Daily and the Heritage group’s Fresh@ stores to open FG stores in the shop-in-shop format,” said Mr R. Aravind, Managing Director, Naidu Hall.

The company has over 1,000 people on its rolls and will recruit more for its new stores.

Back-end operations

“We recently strengthened our back-end operations with better logistics, warehousing, HR management and other necessary infrastructure to support our expansion plans,” he said. The brand Naidu Hall, which is known for its own lingerie brand, has a number of private label products.

According to Mr Aravind, the stores, on an average, witness around 15,000 footfall a day with more than 80 per cent conversion rate. To draw more consumers, the company plans to have coffee bar inside all the big-format stores and is in talks with Café Coffee Day for the purpose.

Turnover

Last fiscal it registered a turnover of around Rs 60 crore. With the new stores it hopes to cross Rs 150 crore during the current fiscal. At present, the expansion projects are funded by internal accruals and bank debts.

“We are planning to rope in a private equity player for 20 per cent stake in the company by April next year. We are in talks with a couple of PE (private equity) players and hope to choose one soon,” said Mr Aravind.

Naidu Hall spends around Rs 3 crore to Rs4 crore a year for marketing, and “it will grow with the turnover in the months to come”.

Two more international flights from Coimbatore

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Efforts on to open customs duty paid shop and foreign exchange counters

Airport to become operational round-the-clock

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Airport in the last two years despite being non-metropolitan has seen more than 100 per cent growth. The commencement of services by three international airliners has made October a milestone in the history of the airport.

On October 1, Air Arabia, the low-cost carrier of the United Arab Emirates, commenced its twice-a-week service to Sharjah on Mondays and Fridays. Air Arabia has plans to make it thrice a week in its winter schedule beginning October-end. Coimbatore – Sharjah is already served by India’s national carrier Indian.

Airport Director K. Hemalatha told The Hindu that Silk Air would commence thrice-a-week service in the last week of October to Singapore. The services would be operated on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.

Sri Lankan Airlines would also commence a weekly thrice service on the same days. However, Silk Air has sanction for even seven days a week while Sri Lankan has sanction for five days a week but depending on patronage and occupancy, the airliners are expected to increase their frequency.

Ms. Hemalatha said that efforts were on to get customs duty paid shop and foreign exchange counters opened at the airport with the introduction of three international services.

Domestic sector

There had been enquiries from a few more international airliners and players in the domestic sector for commencing services from Coimbatore.

Ms. Hemalatha was optimistic that enquiries by low-cost, no-frills domestic airlines would materialise within the next few months and one of the airlines was expected to start services any time.

With the operation of international flight services by Sri Lankan, Silk Air at night and with Air Arabia likely to operate services in the small hours from next month (currently arrivals and departures are during day), the Coimbatore Airport would remain operational round-the-clock.

These airlines were planning to use the belly area in their A 320 aircraft meant for passengers for transporting two to three tonnes of cargo so that their operations would be viable, officials said.

The passenger movement of 45,000 a month during 2005-06 working out to an annual average of 5.8 lakh has touched an all-time high of 1.10 lakh passengers a month now.

Airports being developed at a cost of Rs. 220 crore

The Airports Authority of India is developing airports in the southern part of the country with an outlay of Rs. 220 crore, K. Ramalingam, Regional Executive Director, AAI, Chennai, said here on Monday.

Madurai and Tiruchi are among the airports that have been taken up for expansion, he told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar on aerospace structures organised by the Park College of Engineering and Tekhnology.

The runways and aprons of the airports in Madurai, Tiruchi, Mangalore, Calicut, Vishakapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram were being expanded to cope with the increasing volume of traffic. The runway expansion would enable easy landing and take-off of wide-bodied aircraft.

The terminal buildings at the Madurai, Coimbatore, Mangalore and Calicut airports were being modified to accommodate domestic traffic. New terminal buildings would be constructed at Tiruchi, Madurai, Coimbatore and Mangalore airports for the convenience of international passengers.

Air traffic in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Vishakapatnam, he said, accounted for 32 per cent of the volume of traffic nationwide, and 32 per cent of the revenue.

Mr. Ramalingam, who also inaugurated an exhibition, said the number of passengers who travelled by various airlines in the country during 2006-07 was estimated at 96.34 million.

The Tamil Nadu Government and the Helicopter Corporation of India planned to take up a joint venture for launching helicopter services connecting tourist centres such as Coimbatore and Udhagamandalam and Madurai and Kodaikanal.

Air Vice-Marshal B.K. Murali, Assistant Chief of Air Staff Engineering, Air Headquarters, New Delhi, spoke.
