I hope you know the status of smart city in Kochi. The project was planned to start in 2007 and still now not yet completed. I dont believe that Calicut metro or mono rail will be reality in another five years. I also dont believe whether they have that much people in that city to travel in metro or mono... Only adv is they have three international airports, this is for their foreign workers. In CBE only business, some foreign settled or tourist people use international services, we create more jobs in our city which is also a pride for us & we are not sending half the population to foreign country to earn money. Please dont compare CBE with Kerala cities but I also join you to comment on the Chennai govt. I never considered this as TN govt, it is always Chennai govt.

We always like to belittle our achievements....We havent done badly at ALL.. just a few VOLVOs in Mysore is not going to make it a greater city than Coimbatore...
Reality is all these cities are dependent on one another and the Southern SGs should co-operate and find ways of equitable growth throughout the region

Waiting for the day when Coimbatore emerges as an alternative to chennai,Mysore as an alternative to bangalore and vizag as an alternative to Hyderabad.

T2 cities have great potential,the Human resources in these mega cities are mostly from tier two cities,it is time we promote T2 cities which inturn would ease infra problems in the mega cities and also ensure equitable growth.

City firm develops parking solutions



The unit can be expanded to accommodate more vehicles

In a city that has a burgeoning vehicle population and shortage of parking space, the need for multi-level parking facilities is felt more now than ever.

VEA Parking Solutions, a venture of Coimbatore-based Visual Education Aids, has come out with multi-level and automated parking solutions. It has launched two-tier parking solutions for sedans, multiple vehicles, and Sport Utility Vehicles.

J. Ravi, managing director of VEA Automation and Robotics, told The Hindu on Thursday that each unit can accommodate two vehicles – one on the ground and the other on the platform, stacked vertically. A single unit occupies 220 sq.ft. The hydraulic operating system uses lesser power. The unit can be operated with an inverter too, if power supply is not available. The unit is easy to install and can be expanded to accommodate more vehicles.

The unit can be fixed and dismantled easily to be relocated. While the SUV and sedan models can hold two cars a unit, the multi unit can house any number of cars. Thus, the parking space in apartments, commercial establishments, hospitals, hotels, offices, and public parking areas can be doubled with this product.

The minimum height required is eight feet. The company will install and maintain the system for three years at the customer's site. The company has the capacity to manufacture 40 units a month and this can be expanded. It plans to come out with more models of parking systems.

The parking solution will be available for demonstration at Coimbatore Cosmopolitan Club till Sunday.

Agri students prefer cushy bank jobs

Around 80% of students who complete their bachelors’ degree in agriculture opt for cushy bank jobs instead of roughing it out in farmlands.

According to the latest placement statistics released by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) here, among the 401 agriculture degree students who have been placed so far, 293 of them have landed bank jobs.

A total of48 companied have visited TNAU during 2011- 2012 and offered jobs to 401 students so far.

Every year, the university offers 1395 under graduate seats on the basis of marks scored in higher secondary exams followed by counselling.

TNAU officials have also announced that the issue of applications for the academic year 2012-13 begins on May 7th and last date for submission of application would be July 6, 2012. The application costs Rs 600 for general candidates and Rs 300 for SC/STs.

Sapling distribution begins in city


Getit Infoservices Private Limited on Saturday launched a sapling distribution drive in the city. According to B. Sowbaranika, deputy manager, Coimbatore, the organisation had started the ‘Go Green Go Getit' campaign to create awareness on global warming among the city's residents.

The organisation planned to distribute saplings to the residents every Saturday. The target was to distribute 50,000 saplings. It was part of the organisation's corporate social responsibility activities.

Ms. Sowbaranika said that the organisation planned to distribute the saplings and not plant it because if it planted the saplings, very little awareness would be created among the people. By distributing the saplings, it not only created awareness among the people but also had given them the responsibility of taking care of the saplings.

Mayor S.M. Velusamy inaugurated the sapling distribution at Sungam Junction, on Valangkulam By-pass Road. Getit Infoservices Private Limited had bought the saplings for a price from Isha Foundation. It also planned to extend the scheme to all its 100 branches across the city so as to bring in a competition among them.

The sapling varieties distributed included neem and tamarind. On Saturday the organisation employees distributed close to 1,000 saplings.

Multi-national companies looking to expand R&D centres in tier-2 cities: Study

COST ADVANTAGE

To cut costs and contain attrition, Indian MNCs are moving into tier-2 cities, says a Zinnov study.

Consulting firm Zinnov in its study said that while 96 per cent of MNC R&D companies are located in cities like Bangalore, increasingly they are moving to tier-2 cities such as Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Vadodara, Nagpur, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram. Further, the study highlighted that the MNC R&D talent pool in India for 2011 was 204,196.
R&D talent

This R&D talent pool is growing at the rate of 9 per cent every year and is expected to reach 2.5 lakh by 2015. Mr Chandramouli C.S., Senior Director-Globalization Advisory, Zinnov, said, “MNCs started expanding to tier-2 cities due to advantages like higher catchment area, lower attrition, cost arbitrage, etc.”

Typically, tier-2 cities were a preferred destination for IT and BPO companies which were grappling with commercial real estate and attrition costs. This trend is being seen now with multinationals such as Dell, Nokia, Amazon and others who are looking at tier-2 cities that would be in addition to their existing centres in major cities.

Cost of living in tier-2 cities is 10-25 per cent lower compared to tier-1 cities and provide cost advantage of 15-40 per cent in commercial real estate costs. “Salary costs and other expenses go up in a tier-1 city over a period of time,” said Mr Manohar Joshi, Director–Systems, IonIdea Inc.
Fresh talent

Also, fresh talent pool in tier-2 cities is estimated to form 35 per cent of the Indian R&D workforce going ahead. In the tier-2 cities, work such as testing, level 3 customer support and bug fixing are being undertaken.

These typically tend to be lower level work in terms of profile but which is critical to a company's operations, opine analysts. The study also pointed out that companies are looking at a hub-and-spoke model wherein these R&D centres are closer to their manufacturing business like automotive.
