Even now instead of 6 laning, they can go for expressway!!

Mr. Baalu was speaking after dedicating to the nation the new Coleroon River Bridge on the Tindivinam-Tiruchi section of the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway (NH 45). The bridge, running to a length of 878 metres, has been built at an approximate cost of Rs.35 crore.

The Minister said about Rs.51,300-crore worth of road and port development works had been taken up in Tamil Nadu under the Central government projects. Though it was the National Democratic Alliance government that had launched the Golden Quadrilateral and North-South/East-West Corridor projects, a major portion of the work was executed by the present government. “Not even 40 per cent of the works under the Golden Quadrilateral were executed by the previous government. We have executed 60 per cent of the project work and just 130 km remains to be developed,” he said.

Similarly, under the North-South/East-West corridor project, only five per cent of the works were executed by the previous government. Currently about 40 per cent of the project works were completed and there had been some delay due to problems in land acquisition in Orissa, Bihar and a few other States. Phase-III to VII of the National Highways Development Programme were launched by the UPA government, bringing in an investment of Rs.2,35,690 crore.

Mr. Baalu disclosed that the new bridge constructed across the railway level crossing at Lalapet near Karur would be opened on January 11. The new bridge coming up across the Cauvery river near Tiruchi had been slightly delayed due to the rains and would be opened in the third week of January. The fly-over at Perambalur Road junction on the Tiruchi-Chennai highway would also be opened in the third week of January

S.K. Puri, Member (Technical), National Highways Authority of India, said the Coleroon bridge was built in 22 months, six months ahead of schedule.

The bridge was part of the 204 km-long Tindivanam-Tiruchi-Dindigul section being developed at a cost of Rs.1,260 crore.

The stretch included four by-pass roads at Villupuram, Tindivanam, Samayapuram and Ulundurpet and two of them had already been completed.

Ashok Wasson, Member, NHAI, expressed confidence that the four-lane project on the entire section would be completed ahead of schedule.

Mayor Sarubala R. Tondaiman and MLA M. Rajasekaran spoke.

Location hunt for NSG base in South

The proposal is based on the need to transport special force units quickly into theatres of action anywhere in the country. In the wake of 26/11, which saw commandos being flown in from Delhi to battle the terrorists, the Centre has decided to set up regional command centres for faster mobilisation of forces.
In TN, the criterion is that it should be a vast tract of land not less than 500 acres in area and in proximity to an airport. Revenue authorities in neighbouring Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur district are hunting for a suitable piece of land. Though the government has not received any official communication from the Centre, senior officials said it had begun its search for a location. “We are in the process of identifying land. Once we finalise locations, we will get back to the NSG authorities,” officials said.
Official sources said the authorities in Kancheepuram have found it difficult to find a contiguous 1,000-acre plot. However, they have found a couple of locations with less acreage. In Tiruvallur district, an unused piece of land to an extent of 1,000 acres given to the Centre sometime ago is seen as a good location for the NSG hub. It is located at Alamari near Red Hills, on the outskirts of Chennai.
Given the fact that the NSG training centre at Manesar near Gurgaon in Haryana has been established on a campus exceeding 1,500 acres, state authorities are hunting for at least 1,000 acres to house training facilities and a residential township.
Official sources said the government was even willing to acquire some private land adjacent to poramboke lands. As a precaution, if an ideal location cannot be identified around Chennai, the government has asked the Coimbatore and Tiruchi district administrations to look for an alternative location. Once the state government shortlists a couple of locations, top officers of NSG and officials from the union ministry of home affairs are expected to pay a visit to the sites and discuss the modalities. The state government’s role will end with identifying the location.
The NSG was set up in 1984 as a ‘federal contingency deployment force’ to tackle all kinds of terrorism on Indian soil, ranging from handling anti-hijacking operations to rescue operations. The elite commandos proved their mettle in the 60-hour-long fight against terrorists during the recent Mumbai attacks. Soon after the Mumbai episode, chief minister M Karunanidhi made a strong pitch for a regional NSG unit based in Chennai. He raised the issue with Union home minister P Chidambaram too. He also wrote to the Prime Minister, stressing the advantages of locating the NSG hub in the city to cover the southern states.

Im not sure even if Chennai would be the NSG base as A.K Anthony, the Defence Minister of India hailing from Kerala is already lobbying for establishing it in Trivandrum. If TN govt does not find a location in Chennai, im sure the NSG hub proposal could be shifted to Kerala.

Flyover work begins

At the Palpannai traffic island at Ariyamangalam

Easing move: A blueprint of the proposed grade separator to come up at Ariyamangalam on the Tiruchi-Chennai By-Pass Road near Tiruchi.

TIRUCHI: Construction of the grade separator (flyover), to be built as part of the four-lane Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway, at the Palpannai traffic island at Ariyamangalam in the outskirts of the City has begun.

The structure will be one of the three major grade separators coming up within the City as part of the four-lane projects on the Padalur-Tiruchi and Tiruchi-Virallimalai-Madurai sections. The other two structures would come up at TVS Tollgate Junction and Mannarpuram. While construction of the flyover at Mannarpuram was already underway, work on the one at TVS Tollgate is expected to begin after the completion of the new Cauvery bridge.

The Ariyamangalam flyover, at the critical intersection of the Thanjavur Highway and the Tiruchi-Chennai By-pass Road, would run for a length of about 900 metres, including the approach roads. The structure would have three spans, with an elevated carriageway to cater to traffic on the By-pass Road. There will be a roundabout beneath to link the Thanjavur Road (leading to the Gandhi Market) and the Tiruchi-Thanjavur Highway on the other side.

Service lanes would be provided on all sides so to allow vehicles to move across all four directions.

Sources in the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said work on laying the foundation for the structure began a couple of days ago with traffic on northern side of the traffic island being diverted via service lanes. Work on the other side is also expected to commence soon and a diversion of traffic via service lanes is expected to be enforced in about a week’s time. The flyover is expected to be completed in three months time.

Though the project concessionaire had planned to begin the work at the site much earlier, shifting of underground water mains posed considerable difficulties. The shifting process was completed recently, paving the way for the commencement of the work.

Falling interest rates and declining prices of steel and cement make it the right time for people to firm up their housing plans, say builders and promoters in the city, notwithstanding the global economic meltdown and its impact on the realty sector elsewhere in the country.

For the Tiruchi Centre of the Builders Association of India, its annual exhibition on building materials, ‘Build Rock,’ has just coincided with what many expect to be a time for revival in the construction industry.

For one thing, the lowering of housing loan interest rates by banks and financial houses has kindled interest among people. The acute labour shortage witnessed until a few months back seems to have eased now. Insiders say that many labourers who had migrated to metropolitan cities such as Bangalore and Hyderabad were now returning as the construction industry has been badly hit owing to fall in demand in those cities. But for the land prices, which continue to rule high, it is just about the right time for the people to take the plunge, argue builders.

And for those who are looking to build their homes, Build Rock comes as a one-stop shop, showcasing all their requirements under a single roof. The exhibition, with nearly 75 stalls, has almost everything that one would need for building a house – steel, cement, electrical fittings, wood and wood-based products, wall panels, floor tiles, roofing materials, modular kitchens, designer furniture and even generators.

The power shortage has brought in quite a few inverter makers and generators manufacturers this time around. While inverter makers focus on individual house builders, generator manufacturers target bigger projects including commercial buildings.

Hardware dealers occupy a major chunk of the space displaying a range of products from paints, bulbs and decorative lights, bathroom fittings, water heaters and so on. Though the organisers claim that they have made a conscious attempt to throw some light on interior decoration this time, there is not much for visitors on this aspect except for a couple of stalls put up by furniture dealers (which as such does not make for interior décor entirely).

Free consultation

Free consultation for visitors’ queries is another new addition this time around. But many visitors felt that this would have been much more helpful if done across the table rather than asking them to drop in the queries only to be answered later by post.

The exhibition at the Makkal Mandram in Thillai Nagar will be open from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday/Sunday till December 28. Entry is free.
