TIRUCHI: The Golden Rock Workshop of the Southern Railway here has recorded a profit of Rs.3.13 crore up to June during the current financial year, said J.Digi, its Chief Workshop Manager, here on Saturday.

Addressing the Independence Day function after unfurling the national flag at Armoury Gate ground here on Saturday, Mr Digi said that the workshop had earned a profit of Rs.13 crore during the last financial year. The workshop had bagged the prestigious ‘Green Shield Award’ this year.

The diesel wing of the workshop was catering to the overhauling requirements of the Southern, South Central, South Western, West Central and North Western Railways. It has undertaken work on 120 export locomotives.

Mr Digi said that the carriage wing has turned out 101 coaches in a single month in July this year.

The wagon wing of the workshop had achieved the unique distinction of turning out more than 1,000 wagons in a year and the workshop has gained expertise in building all-stainless steel wagons.

Rare privilege


The workshop has the rare privilege of overhauling, rehabilitating and manufacturing steam locomotives of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR) and Nilgiri Mountain Railways (NMR) and the workshop has bagged orders for manufacturing three locomotives for DHR and for manufacturing four steam locomotives for NMR. The electrical wing has achieved a saving of 5.50 lakh units of power in the last financial year and bagged the prestigious ‘Energy Conservation Shield’ last year.

TIRUCHI: Former Regional Passport Officer S. Balachandran was presented with a special award by the Federation of Consumer and Service Organisations in recognition of consumer friendly services that he introduced during his tenure here. The award was presented by M. Sekaran, Federation convenor, at a function on Thursday.

Mr. Balachandran streamlined the passport application processing system leading to the issuance of passports within 30 days and within two days under the tatkal system and improved the amenities at the office.

N. Mohan, past president, Rotary Club of Tiruchi Fort offered felicitations.


I've plan to meet Mr.M.Sekaran tentatively in September, once upon my return from Australia, and shall discuss various issues pertaining to Trichy's general developments. Hope, I could bring more details thereafter.

It’s now the turn of India’s top management schools to expand their club. The ministry of human resource development called for applications on Tuesday to fill up the positions of four directors for IIMs at Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Rohtak (Haryana), Ranchi (Jharkhand) and Tiruchirappalli (Tamil Nadu).

With the Central government clearing the new payscales for centrally funded technical institutes for IITs and IIMs, the ministry will now pay all the directors a monthly salary of Rs 80,000. The XIth Five-Year Plan assured IIMs to Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya. The IIM in Shillong started last year. And four new IIMs can start classes from 2010. ‘‘The announcement appointing directors of two more IIMs will come later in the year once the Centre and the respective states zero in on the land for setting up the campus,’’ an official said.

Earlier this year, the HRD ministry asked directors of the old IIMs to mentor the new institutes but they refused initially. Later a committee appointed by the Centre, too, recommended that the old IIMs extend their support to establish the new management colleges. Now the directors have agreed.

Chennai-based Akshaya Homes is planning to invest around Rs 300 crore in 11 projects over the next 16 months. The company also set a target to become a Rs 1,000 crore company by 2012 after which the company had said it would look at going to market and open for merger or acquisitions.

T Chitty Babu, chairman and chief executive officer said that the 11 projects include three commercial projects including a IT park and commercial complex at Chennai.

The upcoming residential projects include a 200 units and 142 apartments in Coimbatore and Chennai respectively. The company is also looking at tier cities like Tiruchy, said Babu.

The company is also planning to strengthen its hospitality business by launching a resort in Yercaud by 2010 total number of rooms would be 60 and the resort would come in four acre of land.

Asked whether the company would go public to raise money, Babu said that by 2010 the company will look at raising money from the market and when it become a Rs 1,000 crore company by 2012 it will also look at acquisition and merger opportunities.

The DRM,Trichy had said 5 pairs of electric train would start from August 18th.But, it looks like the CRS is yet to give approval.
What is the real status of this project??

Work on setting up a power sub-station at Tiruchi Junction is progressing on a war footing and is likely to be completed within a month.

The commissioning of this sub-station will enable the Railways to introduce the eagerly awaited regular services hauled by electric locos in the Villupuram-Tiruchi section.

The electrification of the 178.5-km-Villupuram–Tiruchi broad gauge track, taken up at a cost of Rs. 96.67 crore, was completed recently. The Railways had planned to set up three power sub-stations for this project at Vriddhachalam, Ariyalur and Tiruchi.

The Ariyalur sub-station is operational. Work on Tiruchi and Vriddhachalam sub-stations is in progress. While the Tiruchi sub-station work is nearing completion, it will take another three to four months for the commissioning of the Vriddhachalam sub-station.

However, the commissioning of the Tiruchi sub-station itself would enable the operation of trains hauled by electric engines in the new electrified section, irrespective of the completion of the Vriddhachalam sub-station, railway sources told The Hindu. Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) K. J. S. Naidu inspected the electrified track on July 24. The ball is in the court of the Railway Electrification Department, which has to furnish documents after the commissioning of the sub-stations to the Chief Electrical Engineer (CEE), Southern Railway, Chennai. After verification, the CEE will give clearance for operating trains.

It is surprising the electric traction is idle for more than 8 months now.Railways could have used the Ariyalur sub-station to run few services on the Trichy-Villupuram section.Anyway, poor planing by the railways.

Modified Master Plan for Tiruchi local planning area approved

CHENNAI: The State government on Wednesday announced its approval of the modified Master Plan for Tiruchi local planning area.

“The modified Master Plan aims at utilising every bit of land for the optimum benefit of the people, providing for adequate amenities, urban infrastructure facilities keeping an eye on economy and create a healthy, comfortable and safe environment to live in and also to make the town functionally efficient and economically viable,” an official release said.

In July 2005, the government gave its consent to the Commissioner of Town and Country Planning for the preparation of the modified Master Plan. In May 2009, the Commissioner sent the draft Master Plan to the government for approval. The draft Plan covered the physical features, population, land use, analysis, assessment, zoning regulation and land use schedule with correction statement with maps, both for existing land use and the proposed land use.


Hope the authorities could release the masterplan for public viewing, as well as, hope to look forward to Trichy as another Chennai in the makings.

Bus stand to get roof

TIRUCHI: The Chatram satellite bus stand in the city would soon get a roof, fulfilling a felt need of commuters.

A translucent roof is being erected now, covering the bus shelters at the bus stand, as part of development works taken up by the Corporation. The project was sanctioned at a cost of Rs.50 lakh after the Corporation completed the expansion works at the Central Bus Stand in the city.

The three-decade-old Chathram bus stand was officially recognised only in 2005. Even though it was recognised as a ‘D’ grade bus stand, it had not seen much development, except for the bus shelters erected a few years back. It is the terminus for a large number of town buses operating in the city.

Located in a bustling place surrounded by educational institutions and business establishments, the Chathram bus stand is being used by thousands of commuters, especially school and college students, everyday.

Passenger shelters inside the bus stand were damaged frequently, exposing commuters to rain and sun. Though the Corporation had not proposed to fully cover the bus stand initially, the type-design was later changed to address the problem. Currently, work is under way on erecting the steel support system for the roof. The roof would be of translucent PVC sheets, allowing natural light inside.

The civic body has also planned to raise the level of the platforms.

Police drop-down gate inaugurated in Tiruchi

TIRUCHI: Having installed a drop-down gate at Srinivasa Nagar, the city police authorities are in the process of mobilising residents’ associations and identifying sponsors for putting in place more such gates as a means to check crime rate.

The concept involves people’s participation through activation of Friends of Police, to assist beat police for enhancing vigil during night hours, for about seven hours from 10 p.m. onwards.

Commissioner of Police Karuna Sagar inaugurated the first drop-down gate in Srinivasa Nagar on Tuesday.

TIRUCHI: For the first time in Tamil Nadu, Anna University, Tiruchi (AU-T) has structured M.E. programme for enhancing qualifications and competencies of industry professionals.

The programme to be offered in 12 specialisations through Modular Based Credit Banking Scheme at the main campus and at the constituent colleges at Panruti, Dindigul and Ariyalur is expected to motivate industry professionals with a minimum of one year experience to attain their potential academically and improve upon their technical skills.

Conceptualised as a continuous learning process, the programme will not hamper the professional commitments of the candidates, Vice-Chancellor V. Ramachandran said.

The specialisations comprise Structural Engineering; Thermal Engineering; CAD/CAM; Power Systems Engineering; Embedded System Technologies; Applied Electronics; VLSI Design; Communication Systems; Computer Science and Engineering; Software Engineering; Pervasive Computing Technologies; and Systems Engineering & Operations Research. Each module consists of core, elective and practical courses.

The candidates can exercise the option to complete the programme from a minimum of six semesters to a maximum of 14 semesters.

Professional Development Programme (PDP) will be conducted at the four centres for a minimum duration of three days per semester depending on the number of credits in the chosen subject of the module, and the regular classes on all Saturdays, Sundays and holidays to meet the requirements of the regulations and curriculum. E-learning contents will also be provided periodically, Dr. Ramachandran said.

To join the programme, the candidate should have passed an appropriate degree examination as specified in the university website, www.tau.edu.in/cae.

Applications can be obtained in person from the The Director - Centre for Academic Excellence, Anna University-Tiruchi, or from the Special Officers at the three constituent colleges on payment of Rs.1,000 (Rs.1,050 by post).
