Construction work of Srirangam Jeer Mutt over:

Srirangam, Sep 8 : The work on the construction of Rs three crore Srirangam Jeer Mutt at Tirumala has been completed and sacred idols of Lord Perumal and Acharyas have been readied for consecration at the mutt.

Addressing a press conference here yesterday, 50th pontiff of the mutt Sri Ranga Narayana Jeer said the jeer mutt at Tirumala would be a branch of the Srirangam Jeer Mutt. He said the mutt constructed on an area of 5,000 sqft has been received from the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam on a long lease on the Gogarbam dam site.

He informed that 20 idols including that of Lord Perumal, Sri Thaayar, Sri Venkatachalapathy, Sri Ramanujar, Sri Nammazhwar, Sri Manavala Mamunigal and other Acharyas were made at Swamimalai and had been brought to Srirangam. The sacred idols would be taken to Tirumala for consecration at the Jeer mutt. Sri Jeer, who was currently observing ‘chathurmasya sankalpam', said this was his 23rd ‘Chathurmasya' at Srirangam after heading the Jeer Mutt when he was 60 years old.

He considered it a divine opportunity to perform the ‘sankalpam' at Srirangam Jeer mutt where Sri Ramanujar had lived and performed similar rituals. He said the ‘Sankalpam' which commenced on July 15 las would conclude on September 12 when special Veda Parayanam would be performed.

Infact we have many industries in Trichy - Madurai, Trichy - Tanjore, Trichy - Perambalur, Trichy - Pudukkottai roads. Among these four, Trichy - Madurai and Trichy - Tanjore roads are prime. These two roads are already filled with many industries. Why cant we send emails about the Industrial corridor to our M.P. and MLA?

Expecting replies from our forumers...
It's shocking to see Trichy leftout.

Just now sent mail to both Trichy MP and Thiruverumbur MLA.

Please send all your concern to both as Thiruverumbur MLA too (mla.senthilkumar@dmdkparty.com). He can very well raise concern in Assembly if possible.

Its not much surprising to see Trichy ignored in the industrial belt. But this time all major cities/towns are included in industrial corridors list.
Trichy already has some industries which is specific to Trichy itself.
So industrial corridor along Trichy - tanjore/perambalur/pudukottai/madurai will be the various options to be considered. But nothing has been mentioned. The corridor along perambalur-trichy-madurai will be the best one and would attract largest number of industries in the entire central/south TN if proposed.

திருச்சி விமான நிலையத்தில் சரக்கு ஏற்றுமதிக்கு 4 முகமைகள் விண்ணப்பம்

First Published : 07 Sep 2011 02:10:15 PM IST

Old news on Trichy Master Plan

Corporation awaits master plan for uplift of Tiruchi Thursday, November 6, 2008

Tiruchi: A good transport system, adequate water supply and modern infrastructure are a dream for any citizen. But if the Tiruchi Corporation rolls out a Rs 5,110-crore blueprint then it would be a dream come true for residents here.

The corporation is awaiting the final report of a master plan for the development of the city from a private consultant roped in to assess the infrastructure requirements of the city over the next 30 years. The Chennai-based agency Community Consulting India Private Limited had submitted its draft report a year ago that proposed various projects, at a total investment of Rs 5,110 crore.

“We expect the final report of the master plan in about a month,” said corporation commissioner T T Balsamy. Once the report comes, the feasibility of the projects suggested by the consultants and the mode of raising funds would be explored and this could prove to be a major initiative for a tier II city.

The draft report submitted last November has plans for a ring road to link the highways around the city and a Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) to decongest road traffic. The report also emphasised the need for developing special corridors, giving a facelift to vital road junctions, construction of flyovers and subways and additional bus terminals across the city. Besides, strengthening civic infrastructure, tapping the heritage value of the city and widening the tax net were also some of the key suggestions of the draft plan.

Out of the total capital investment of
about Rs 5,110 crore, Rs 1,367 crore would be for long-term measures such as the MRTS and other major infrastructure projects, while a sum of about Rs 2,480 crore would be required over the next five years for immediate priorities, the consultants had stated.

“It is possible to mobilise funds. We can approach the state and central governments and other funding agencies,” said Balsamy, optimistically. The corporation has already commenced the drinking water project, which envisages adequate supply of water for the next 30 years keeping in mind the growing population of the city, as suggested in the report at a cost of Rs 144 crore, with Japanese aid. Another project, to provide underground drainage connections to 75,000 more households in the areas of corporation at a cost of Rs 160 crore has also been chalked out, he said.

----- trichyonmove.blogspot.com/2008/11/corporation-awaits-master-plan-for.html ------

The drinking water project still not completed. If the above projects just taken an initiative now would be completed by 2108. But a good plan had been drawn for the future. Hope some initives done by our new commitioner. The plans been discussed now have been chalked out earlier itself!

Trichy to MDU, Tanjore, Perambalur, Pudukottai are already having good number of industries. If they are declared as industrial corridor then for sure they will get good investments.

I am wondering why central region (except trichy and its surroundings) which is one of the most backward region of the state is not considered for industrial development. Maybe the delta regions (thanjai, nagai, tiruvarur) are considered only for Agriculture?
It is really disappointing Trichy didn't figure in industrial corridor list. Trichy can have 3 or 4 industrial corridors but the irony is not even a single corridor is announced.

I am not sure what CII-Trichy doing? They should take this with CM and hope she considers one for Trichy.

Corporation releases list of polling stations for 60 wards

The Tiruchi Corporation on Thursday released the list of polling stations for the civic elections due soon.

However, the list does not include the polling stations for the five new wards that are to be added to the Corporation, apparently due to an interim injunction granted by the Madras High Court recently against the merger of the Tiruverumbur Town Panchayat.

The injunction has been granted based on a writ petition filed by an advocate, Balachander of Tiruverumbur.

The State government has already issued an order merging the Tiruverumbur town panchayat, Pappakurichi, Ellakudi, Keezha Kalkandarkottai and Alathur village panchayats, all located in the eastern periphery of the city, with the Tiruchi Corporation.

Consequent to the merger, five more wards are to be added to the Corporation.

The Corporation currently has 60 wards in the four zones of Ariyamangalam, Golden Rock, Srirangam and K.Abishekapuram. Three of the five new wards would come under Golden Rock and two under Ariyamangalam zones.

New wards

Wards 1, 2 and 3 of Pappakurichi panchayat would become the 61 ward and wards 4 and 5 would become the 65 ward of the Corporation.

Wards 1 to 4 of Ellakudi panchayat, wards 1 and 2 of Alathur and wards 1 and 2 of Keezha Kalkandarkottai would be the 63 ward of the Corporation. Wards 1 to 9 of the Tiruverambur town panchayat would make the 64 ward, while wards 10 to 18 would be the 65 ward of the expanded Corporation.

All the 65 wards were expected to go to elections under the Tiruchi Corporation when the local body elections are held. However, there has been stiff resistance to the decision from residents and local representatives of political parties in some of the local bodies that are to be merged with the Corporation. Locals have also staged a series of agitations against the merger.

K.Veera Raghava Rao, Commissioner, who released the list of polling stations for the existing 60 wards in the city, said that the polling stations for the new wards would be notified separately after further orders from the High Court.

As per the list released by Mr.Rao, there would be 689 polling stations in the four zones of the Corporation. These include 581 polling stations for all voters and 54 each exclusively for men and women.

The K.Abishekapuram zone would have the maximum of 196 polling stations; 173 in Golden Rock; 170 in Srirangam and 150 in Ariyamangalam zone. The number polling stations was the same as in the previous local body elections.

The 60 wards in the city had a total of 5,40,399 voters including 2,72,325 women, 2,68,039 men and 35 others.

The list of polling stations would be available for the public to verify at the Corporation main office, the zonal, ward offices and the respective polling stations.

Answering a query, Mr.Rao said officials were engaged in working out the reservation of wards based on the 2001 census. Preparatory arrangements for the local body polls were also underway, he said.

All set for cable operators tuning in to Arasu network

Cable TV operators of Tiruchi district are likely to gradually switch over to the Arasu Cable TV Corporation's network over the next 10 days.

Though a control room of the Arasu Cable, set up during the previous DMK regime, is functioning near the railway junction in the city, a majority of cable operators in the city are yet to join the network. There were about 350 to 400 cable operators in the district. While cable operators welcome the revival of the Arasu Cable TV Corporation, they have been entertaining certain misgivings. One of the major concerns for cable TV operators was the absence of popular pay channels in the government network. Operators feel that they would be in for trouble if they opted for the government network without channels popular with women and children.
These apart, the network should have major English news and Hindi channels to meet the demand in Tiruchi, they said. Cable operators say that they have been asked to lay their own optic fibre cable network to get the connection from the Arasu Cable TV Corporation control room. This many said would involve high costs, especially for operators in the suburbs of the city.
However, sources in the Tiruchi District Cable TV Operators Association said that operators, at an emergency meeting of the association held on Wednesday, agreed to lay the cable at their cost though it is normally provided by the multi-system operator. “We had decided to collect money among ourselves and lay the cables. We had problems in getting the cable, but now an agency has assured us to supply the cables over the next couple of days. We could complete the process of laying the cables within a week to 10 days,” an office bearer of the association told The Hindu .
Some operators feel that the Arasu Cable TV Corporation should have quality infrastructure and manpower. Quality modulators and nodes were essential so that they did not face any problems in receiving quality signal, once they joined the government network. “Apart from this, it is also important that government network gets the popular pay channels. We hope that the government take necessary steps for this within the next 10 days,” the office bearer said. Cable operators also want the government to increase the monthly subscription of Rs.70 fixed by the government. With Rs.20 going to the government, operators would be left with just Rs.50 per connection. Given the operational cost and other overheads, the subscription fixed by the government would not be remunerative, operators said.

PMK, MDMK not to contest bypoll

Ruling out contesting the October 13 Tiruchirappalli (West) bye-election, the Pattali Makkal Katchi on Friday said it will, however, support the Dalit-based Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi if the party fielded its nominee. Speaking to reporters here, party chief S Ramadoss, whose PMK walked out of the DMK-led alliance two months ago in the wake of the its defeat in the April 13 assembly polls, also ruled out forging alliance with the Dravidian or any national parties.

The VCK is a constituent of the DMK-led front and after the poll debacle in which the former returned no MLAs to the present Assembly. Dr. Ramadoss and VCK founder Thol. Thirumavalavan have been appearing in public together, especially relating to the clemency for the three death row convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case - Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan.

Dr. Ramadoss also extended support to VCK in the local body polls if it contested by its own and said an alliance was “possible”. Responding to the Jayalalithaa government action against DMK leaders including former Ministers on land grab complaints, he described it as “vindictive action.”

MDMK’s decision

The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Friday said they would not contest in the October 13 bypoll to the Tiruchirapalli (West) assembly constitutency. However, the party would participate
in the local body polls, dates for which was to be announced, MDMK general secretary Vaiko told reporters here. Mr. Vaiko said his party will not have alliance with DMK or ADMK in the polls. Tiruchirapalli (West) seat fell vacant following the death of AIADMK legislator Mariam Pitchai in a road accident in May.

MRF to roll out tyres from Tiruchi unit early next year

Tyre maker MRF Ltd will start production at its Tiruchi plant in the first quarter of the 2012 calendar year.

“Construction work is in progress at the Tiruchi plant. We will start production in the quarter beginning January and ramp up capacity in 6-8 months,” said Mr Koshy K. Varghese, Executive Vice-President – Marketing, MRF.

This facility was proposed as its existing six manufacturing units were operating at full capacity. The company has invested Rs 900 crore on the 200-acre plant, which will cater to both domestic and export requirements.

MRF’s other manufacturing units are in Arakonam, Tiruvottiyur (Tamil Nadu), Medak (Andhra Pradesh), Goa, Kottayam (Kerala) and Puducherry.

In FY2011, MRF invested close to Rs 900 crore. Investments for FY2012 (MRF's financial year ends September), Mr Varghese said, will be in tune to market conditions, given the slowdown in the auto industry.

To counter escalating rubber prices, MRF had hiked tyre prices four times, ranging from 1.5-2.5 per cent since January. “But this is not enough; hence dismal results last quarter. But we also can’t pass on the entire cost to customers given the intense competition in the industry.”

MRF is on the lookout for sourcing opportunities in the ASEAN region where it has a footprint, to tide over raw material shortage in India.

Apart from auto industry, MRF also has a small exposure in the aviation industry. It supplies 400-500 helicopter tyres a month to HAL and Defence. It is in discussions with the government to supply tyres to military aircraft.

Water motors used for illegal purposes seized

The Tiruchirappalli Corporation has seized 28 water pumping motors ranging from one to two hp each, that were used to "illegally suck water" from the banks of the Cauvery, to tide over the severe water shortage existing in the city. "The corporation releases water for a two-hour duration in the morning, which is strictly meant for drinking purposes and not for washing clothes or utensils," a spokesman said on Friday.

As there is a severe water shortage, some people resorted to panic storing of the precious commodity. The corporation also received several complaints from certain quarters that their water taps were virtually dry for reasons not known to them. Following this, the corporation conducted a raid for a few weeks, and on Friday the commissioner Veeraraghava Rao made a statement that the Ponmalai area topped the list with the largest number of illegal activity where the corporation officials found 15 illegal motors, followed by Srirangam (7), Ariyamangalam (4) and K Abhishekhapuram (2). Rao also ordered disconnection of water supply to those houses which were using the illegal motors, and also said that they would not be returned to the owners at any cost.

The drive against illegal water tapping was launched on August 24 and the severed connections are restored on payment of a fine of Rs 3000, the commissioner said. Making a fervent plea not to steal water in this way, Rao said that the seized motors would be later auctioned in public.

EU project to develop cluster for clean coal technologies launched

Quote:
A major European Union-assisted project to develop a cluster for clean coal technologies (CCT) and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies for the country's thermal power sector was launched here on Saturday.

The project would be implemented by the Tiruchi Regional Engineering College Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (TREC-STEP) in partnership with the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. The main objective of the project is to help and equip the country's thermal power industry with clean coal technologies and to control and capture their carbon emissions.

The ambitious project aims at developing and deploying a dedicated technology cluster for CCT and CCS by involving the main players in the thermal power industry, policy makers, academics and international experts.

The total project outlay is Rs.5.50 crore. About 60 per cent of the project cost, amounting to Rs.3.30 crore, would be funded by the European Union, through the European Commission under the Thematic Programme for Environment and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources. TREC-STEP and BHEL would jointly bear the remaining cost.

The project envisages the launch and management of a cluster hub, taking up studies for knowledge generation, capacity leverage programmes, benchmarking, internships, demonstration and deployment of CCT and CCS initiatives, incubating innovative clean coal technology ventures and documentation and dissemination of the technologies.

The first task of the project would be to bring key thermal power sector players on board for the launch of the CCS technology cluster hub. Around 10 to 15 power sector players would be involved in the project and the numbers would be increased to 30 by the end of the project. The entire plan of action is to be completed within 36 months and the project would be sustained thereafter.

Speaking at the launch of the project here, A.V.Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, said about 40 per cent of the cardon dioxide emission was produced by the thermal power plants. BHEL, a major power plant equipment manufacturer, was already working on improving efficiency of its equipment and pollution control mechanisms. The project taken by the BHEL and TREC-STEP would emerge as the platform of abundant expertise. The BHEL, he assured, would take the lead in identifying the players and international experts to bring the best of technologies in controlling carbon emissions.

Rajaram Nityananda, Chairman, TREC-STEP, said checking and capturing carbon emission posed a challenging problem and the project would bring about a synergy of expertise available among the academics and technocrats of the country in tackling the challenge.

S.Sundarrajan, Director, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchi, said the NIT would offer full R&D support for the project. The NIT, he said, has oriented itself to emerge as a centre of excellence and power products research centre and has entered into a strategic partnership with the BHEL.

S.Sridharan, president, Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (TIDITSSIA), said the project would help address and bring about solutions to an important challenge faced by the country's power sector.

R.M.P.Jawahar, Executive Director, TREC-STEP, said the country, being the third largest coal mining nation in the world, has a most compelling case for managing the rapidly increasing power requirement and the need to reduce carbon emissions. With the country committing itself to reduce by 20 to 25 per cent of its CO2 emission levels of 2005, the project would also be a technology response to assist the government in achieving this goal, he said.

Mr.Krishnan and Mr.Jawahar signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation under the project on the occasion.

Gita Chengappa, Manager, TREC_STEP, said this was the fourth EU-funded project that has been bagged by the organisation amidst stiff international competition. Bindu, project coordinator, proposed a vote of thanks.

A 'bloodsucking game' that benefits the haves

What was once the traditional 'Kai mathu' (lending from hand to hand) has these days assumed million dollar proportions with the arrival of "Kanthu Vatti" which literally means "having one's blood sucked through interest." This change is associated with exploitative interest rates accompanied by strong pressure for repayment.

The law forbids charging of interest rates beyond three per cent per annum, but ironically, the growth of the economy has proportionately lent itself to more borrowings. The implementation of the law, however effective, runs into trouble with the police-moneylender nexus and the absence of any documentation, which serves as a boon to both the moneylender and the willing borrower, but a bane to law enforcing authorities. The modus operandi of the illegal moneylender has a lot to do with the modus vivendi of the borrower whose financial irresponsibility has emboldened unscrupulous private financiers. When a borrower is already burdened with a debt of say, Rs 20,000, the illegal moneylender takes him to an authorized moneylender where the former becomes a "witness" when the case goes to court. The illegal moneylender would get his money back instantly, and the debt amount would now increase manifold with lawyer's fee, added interest and other service charges.

The poor borrower would have to sign a blank promissory note, a postcard, a green sheet of paper, and a non- judicial stamp paper. The authorized moneylender would, within 100 days, write a letter purportedly written by the borrower from his address saying
that "The amount I borrowed from you has been very useful in solving my problem, and I promise to repay the amount with interest as per the
agreement." This process is to mislead the courts with evidence.

According to advocate Gopinath, (Murugan's lawyer), when the borrower signs the blank papers in a moment of delusion, it is tantamount to walking into an eternal debt trap. These signed papers could be manipulated in a court of law according to legal convenience, and the borrower more often than not ends up committing suicide or opts to sell off whatever remains of his property to save face. Many people have committed suicide, and most people affected are employees of Ponmalai railway workshop. Gopinath said lenders themselves withdrawing money with the borrower's debit card at a nationalised bank ATM in Ponmalaipatti is a common sight on the first or second of every month.

For the unscrupulous moneylender who is allegedly backed by political bosses, muscle power is the principal investment. Sometimes, the
moneylenders' interest would also extend to "targeting whoever is pleasant" in the unfortunate borrower's household, and such extreme measures have driven a number of people to suicide, said Gopinath. This is precisely the reason that though 90% of the small vendors are in the venal grip of the moneylender, conviction in this regard has not seen the light of day. More often than not, the police are helpless against moneylenders as the latter are hand-in-glove with local political bosses. The lower grade police are also tempted to take the side of the moneylender as the latter bribe them very often. In the final analysis, the temptation to
borrow is irresistible as cash is always available for the asking at odd hours without the hassles of documentation.

There is even competition among moneylenders to "help" their clients. It is a case of a person paying for his own noose, explained Gopinath, who has helped a few persons come out of the debt trap.
