Trichy's Gandhi Market affected as load men strike
The Gandhi Market located in central Trichy came to a standstill on Tuesday as loading men struck work demanding higher wages in direct proportion to the weight of the gunny bags filled with English vegetables they unloaded. They said they would otherwise restrict themselves to carry a maximum weight of 80 kilo per sack. As many as 5000 sacks of particularly English vegetables like carrot and cabbage are offloaded at Gandhi Market daily, and unlike Chennai's Koyambedu or Coimbatore markets, the sacks have to be carried on the human head across a distance of 300 meters due to inadequate parking close to the warehouses.
CITU's district secretary R Raja told TOI that as per the International Labor Organization's (ILO) norms which was duly ratified by the Central Labor Ministry the load man should not be forced to carry a weight of more than 55 kilos per sack. But recently, sacks containing the English vegetables coming from Ooty and Bangalore were filled with a weight of up to 120 kilos. This was beyond the bearable limit of the load man, and Some of the load men had suffered injuries while offloading the overweight sacks, said Raja. The immediate problem is the "unbearable weight" and not the wages, he clarified. The workers are paid at the rate of Rs 5.50 per sack for offloading. Raja alleged that the English- vegetable-carrying-sacks that are bigger in size carry as much as 120 kilo, and even though the commission agents were aware of the increased weight, they treated it as though was a normal load, and in the process the load men were exploited. Raja also said that his union of workers entered into an agreement with Fort assistant commissioner, Stalin that the workers would not be forced to carry more than 80 kilos, and the agreement was henceforth observed more in breach. Hence, today's agitation was called for. The deputy commissioner of Labor, Mahajaran has now called for a meeting on Wednesday of all the stakeholders- the load men, the Union representatives, the commission agents and the traffic police - to strike out a favorable deal. The problem had originated at predawn on Monday, and after the intervention of police, the workers resumed work. But on Tuesday, as many as 122 of the English vegetable loaders struck work again, leading to traffic as well as business-related problems as the peace deal brokered the previous day didn't last. Police said it was a gimmick by the load men to increase the wages, and the problem always reared its ugly head a month ahead of the Deepavali festival. m.timesofindia.com/PDATOI/articleshow/9974326.cms Last edited by deepu051993; September 14th, 2011 at 03:58 PM. |

Rain inundates low-lying areas in Trichy
Many low-lying areas in the city are inundated with water following the nocturnal rain during the past two days. Water entered houses in Golden Rock and Subramaniapuram areas. Thought the sky was heavily overcast on Tuesday, it did not rain during the day. While Golden Rock area registered the highest rainfall of 128 mm during the last 24 hours ending at 8am on Tuesday, the airport area registered the second highest rainfall of 111mm.
Interestingly, there was no rain in Musiri taluk, while Manapparai registered a nominal 37mm rainfall. At Manapparai, the rain was accompanied by thunder, and a woman, Alphonse Mary, was struck by lightning on Monday Her condition is stated to be improving. At some other places in Manapparai, the heavy rain accompanied by strong winds uprooted a number of trees that line the roads creating a traffic jam for hours on the Manapparai-Kovilpatti stretch. m.timesofindia.com/PDATOI/articleshow/9974319.cms |

Tiruchi companies can utilise US commercial service
The United States Commercial Service has a mandate to work in smaller towns and not just concentrate on major cities in India and companies in tier II cities such as Tiruchi can utilise its services for exploring business opportunities in the United States, said James Golsen, Principal Commercial Officer, US Consulate General, Chennai.
Speaking at an interactive session on Business Opportunities in USA, organised here in association with the Tiruchi chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Mr.Golsen, who heads the Commercial Service offices in South India, said a team of professionals was engaged in fostering ties between Indian and US companies for exploration of business opportunities of mutual benefit. Apart from introducing American companies and products to companies here, it was also introducing Indian companies to the US technology. The Commercial Service offered match-making services and organised interfaces between Indian and US companies for exploring mutual trade interests. “If you are a company in search of a technology or joint ventures with the US companies, you could get in touch with us,” he told the CII members. Over the next six months, several trade delegations from the US are set to visit South India. The Commercial Service also took Indian buyers delegations to the US. It can also help companies, which are interested in started commercial operations in the US, to enter the market there. The service was working in close coordination with Indian partners such as the CII. The future, Mr.Golsen said, was in mid-size companies and there was much scope for mutual cooperation between such companies in the two countries, he said. K.G.Muralidharan, convenor, Central Districts Development Panel, CII, Tiruchi, said with bilateral ties between India and the US growing stronger in recent years there was good scope for exploring mutual business opportunities between companies in the two countries. Tiruchi, he pointed out, was a power plant equipment and fabrication hub. It was a major educational centre and a part of an important cultural and tourism circuit. The city was also emerging as a health care destination. The city, centrally located and well connected by road, rail and air, offered an ideal investment destination for US companies. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper...cle2457884.ece |

Paranjothi is ADMK candidate for Trichy west by election
Former MLA M Paranjothi, who oversaw the AIADMK election campaign for party supremo J Jayalalithaa at Srirangam assembly constituency, was rewarded with a party ticket to contest the October 13 by-election to Tiruchirapalli (West).
Mr. Paranjothi represented Srirangam constituency from 2006-11 before paving the way for Ms. Jayalalithaa to contest from the temple town for the April 13 polls. The by-election to the constituency was necessitated following the death of Mariam Pitchai in a road accident, who had been also inducted in the Jayalalithaa-led cabinet. http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/...cle2459156.ece Last edited by bajk; September 16th, 2011 at 03:14 PM. |

Students, volunteers take up drive to rid Srirangam of plastic waste
![]() College students, volunteers, environmental activists and Corporation sanitary workers came together to take up a cleaning drive aimed at making wards 1 to 6 in Srirangam and Thiruvanaikovil areas plastic-litter free under a ‘Masilla Tiruchi' (Clean Tiruchi) campaign organised under the auspices by the Environmental Protection Forum here on Friday. The campaign was taken up by the Forum in association with Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College and the Tiruchi Corporation to create a plastic-free model zone in the city. About 600 persons, including students from Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College, St.Joseph's College, Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, and the Department of Women's Studies of the Bharathidasan University, volunteers and Corporation sanitary workers, fanned out to various areas in the island town wedged between the Cauvery and Coleroon rivers. Armed with gloves and bags, the volunteers split into different groups removed plastic wastes at around 70 places across the six wards from 8.30 a.m. to noon. The volunteers also distributed pamphlets against the use of non degradable plastics door-to-door during the campaign. About 20 bags of plastic wastes were collected and handed over to the Corporation at the end of the campaign, according to the organisers. At a brief ceremony, the campaign was inaugurated by Fr.L.Anthuvan, director, Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts, at Mambazhasalai. Later in the day, certificates were distributed to the volunteers who participated in the campaign at a World Ozone Day celebration organised at the Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College as part of the campaign. M.Ravichandran, Head, Department of Environment, Bharathidasan University, distributed the certificates in the presence of S.Martin, advocate and M.Pitchaimani, vice principal, Srimad Andavan College.
