Corporation takes up mass cleaning drive
The Tiruchi Corporation has taken up a mass cleaning campaign in the city, targeting five places in each ward.
The campaign, underway over the past couple of days, was currently underway at around 1,550 identified spots where garbage accumulation was found to be high. Each day about 325 identified spots were covered. Teams of Corporation sanitary workers have been mobilised to carry out the campaign, with specific focus on removing plastic wastes. Solid wastes collected from the spots were immediately cleared and transported to the Corporation garbage dumping yard at Ariyamangalam by lorries. Commissioner K.Veera Raghava Rao, in a statement, pointed out that the Corporation has already launched an awareness drive against the use of below 40 microns in thickness. He appealed to city residents to extend their cooperation to the cleanliness initiatives of the Corporation and desist from dumping garbage in public places. Source : The Hindu |

RPF women constables to be trained in handling AK-47 rifle
For the first time, women constables of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) serving in the Southern Railway Zone are to be imparted specialised training in handling the advanced AK-47 assault rifle.
The six-day course for the first batch of 20 RPF women constables will be conducted at the RPF Zonal Training Centre in Khajamalai here from February 13. The participants–constables and head constables–serving in various railway divisions within the Southern Railway zone will undergo hands-on training imparted by the instructors of the training centre. Besides being explained about the weapon and its functioning, the women constables would be trained in inspection, stripping, assembling of the assault rifle, and rectifying faults. An audio-visual presentation would be made to the participants highlighting about the features of this weapon system. As part of the specialised crash course, the participants would be taken to the firing range near Tiruchi where they would carry out firing practice using the AK-47 rifles. This will be the first time that women constables of the RPF serving in the Southern Railway Zone are to be exposed and trained in handling AK-47 assault rifle, says a senior RPF officer. Women constables of the RPF were already trained in handling the INSAS rifle (Indian Small Arms System), Self Loading Rifle, 9mm pistol, carbine and the .303 rifle. The idea is to enable the RPF women constables to handle the AK-47 rifle as well which was inducted into the force last year, the officer added. The over 50-year-old RPF Zonal Training Centre has been periodically organising crash courses for RPF officers and men on various subjects including VIP security, operation and maintenance of security gadgets, improvised explosive devices and counter measures, disaster management and human rights to enhance their professional skills and efficiency and update their knowledge. Over 3,000 RPF personnel serving in the Southern Railway, South Western Railway Zones and Integral Coach Factory at Chennai attended the crash courses on various subjects in 2011. In addition to safe guarding railway property, RPF personnel have been vested with the responsibility of escorting passenger trains and providing access control, regulation and security on platforms, passenger and circulating areas. Driving home the helmet message
![]() The helmet awareness-cum-motivation campaign organised here on Friday as part of ‘Vision Tiruchi' programme drove home the importance of wearing headgear while riding two-wheeler, and road safety message to the motorists. Organised jointly by The Hindu and Canara Bank, Circle Office, Tiruchi, the campaign conducted at the busy Head Post Office junction during the morning was inaugurated by the Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav. Pamphlets were circulated to motorists by the staff of The Hindu and the bank officials who positioned themselves at vantage points around the traffic intersection, spreading the message of road safety to the motorists. It was indeed a pleasant surprise for several motorists when they were presented with gifts, as part of the awareness campaign, by the Commissioner of Police, for wearing helmet and strapped perfectly. Besides gifts, T-shirts were also given to motorists found adhering to the helmet rule, which came into effect in the city on February 1, in order to motivate them. While handing over gifts to the helmet rule-abiding motorists, the Commissioner of Police made it a point to interact with the riders briefly and appreciated them for wearing helmet. “It is a good and a very positive initiative on the part of The Hindu and Canara Bank for having organised such a campaign,” said Mr.Shailesh Kumar Yadav who had recently issued a directive making it mandatory for motorcycle riders and pillion riders to wear helmet. Such initiatives would not only educate motorists but also make them realise the importance of wearing helmet, he pointed out. He requested motorists to strap their helmet correctly, else it doesn't serve its intended purpose. The Deputy General Manager and Circle Head, Canara Bank, Tiruchi Circle, R.Sampath Kumar, Deputy General Manager – Financial Inclusion S.Segaran, officials of the bank, Regional General Manager, The Hindu , Tiruchi R.Srinivasan, and Regional General Manager (Advertisement), The Hindu , Tiruchi, T.Subramanian took part. Surprise gifts for toeing safety line
It was raining gifts for motorists, at the Head Post Office junction in the city on Friday morning, for observing road safety. Two-wheeler riders wearing helmets and drivers of four wheelers wearing safety belts were stopped to be presented with surprise gifts during the ‘helmet awareness cum motivation' campaign organised by The Hindu in association with the Canara Bank. The campaign was organised under the The Hindu 's readers connect programme ‘Vision Tiruchi', with the gifts sponsored by the Canara Bank.
The City Police Commissioner, Shailesh Kumar Yadav, who re-introduced the compulsory helmet rule in the city from February 1, appeared to be overjoyed to see over 90 per cent of the riders using helmets. The Commissioner handpicked two-wheeler riders and presented them surprise gifts that included rechargeable torch lights, table top calculators, wall clocks, and T-shirts. Women riders were given jewel boxes. Among those who received the gifts was P.Dharshini, Officer-Marketing, Canara Bank. Deriving pride in receiving the gift from Mr. Yadav in the presence of her superiors, she too joined the volunteers in distributing the pamphlets. M.Gokul Raj, a youth employed with Ashok Leyland, another gift recipient, emphasised that every two-wheeler rider has to wear helmets in their own interests. Appreciation came calling for Suresh Kumar, driver of a cab at Sangeetha Hotel stand and a woman occupant who had just arrived from abroad, for using the seat safety belt. The woman and her family members were proceeding to the junction straight from the airport, when they were presented with the gifts. “I will motivate other drivers to use safety belt”, Mr. Suresh Kumar said. Police and bank officials felt elated by the near cent per cent compliance to helmet rule by women who passed by riding two-wheelers during the hour-long campaign. B.Vineetha, who had just completed her graduation from the Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Vaishnavi of Police Colony, and Zaibun Khalil of Iqbal Colony were among the lucky few to receive gifts. “This (compliance) augurs well (with road safety)”, exclaimed R.Sampath Kumar, Deputy General Manager of the Canara Bank and Tiruchi Circle Head. “People in Tiruchi have always been peace-loving and law-abiding. The compulsory helmet rule has evoked overwhelming response from all sections of society”, Mr.Shailesh Yadav said, and left the scene complimenting The Hindu and the Canara Bank for the campaign. bus driver run over in road rage
In a run-in over rash driving, a lorry driver knocked down a bus driver with his vehicle near Kattur early on Saturday morning. The police later traced and arrested the accused near Thuvakudi toll gate in Trichy.
The victim, A Sundararajan (44) of Anna Nagar in Trichy was a driver with a private bus company. He had begun his day as usual at 5am with a few passengers from Chatram bus stand to Thirunedunkulam near Thiruverumbur. When the vehicle reached Gandhi market area, a lorry tried to overtake the bus. Lorry driver A Mohammed Kasim (29) from Tharasuram in Kumbakonam was reportedly driving in a rash manner. Even as Sundararajan and Kasim abused each, the latter managed to overtake the bus. Sundararajan, who was in no mood to give up, chased the lorry and overtook it. He stopped the bus at Kattur bus stop and alighted to waylay the lorry. Conductor V Shanmugavel of Thanjavur also joined him. The two blocked the lorry and once again had a wordy altercation with the lorry driver. Kasim, who was all through sitting at the driver's seat, took revenge on Sundararajan by running the vehicle over him. He died on the spot. Shanmugavel managed to escape. On information from the Thiruverumbur police, policemen at the toll gate near Thuvakudi intercepted the lorry and arrested Kasim. The police registered cases under section 294(B) and 302 of IPC and has remanded him to judicial custody. The deceased Sundararajan is survived by his wife and two children. CM's intervention sought for building subway at G.Corner
Keeping alive their demand for the construction of a subway across the Chennai Bypass Road at G.Corner in the city, a section of residents of Golden Rock have petitioned Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on the matter.
In a representation sent to the Chief Minister on behalf of residents, H.Ghouse Baig, secretary of the Golden Rock Branch of the Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, has called for the State government's intervention to fulfil the persistent demand from the people of the area. The demand arose after the four-laning of the by-pass road that has left residents of Golden Rock and other residential colonies without direct access to the highway. A large number of residents and employees of the Railway Workshop have to use the service lane to reach the TVS Tollgate or take a detour via Senthaneerpuram. The Golden Rock Workshop has more than 5000 employees and a sprawling railway colony is also situated around it. Apart from this, Tiruchi division's Railway headquarters hospital and several schools are also situated inside Golden Rock, Mr.Baig pointed out. Though the National Highways Authority of India was willing to build the subway, it demanded that the Railways bear its construction cost. The Railways on the other hand offered to provide the required land free of cost but did not agree to meet the cost of construction. Hapless residents are forced to face much hardship as the stalemate remains unresolved, Mr.Baig said and appealed to the Chief Minister to sanction the funds required for the construction of the subway. Corporation installs waterless toilet cubicles in bus stand
The Central Bus Stand in the city, which has come to be associated with the foul odour emanating from open urinals, is getting a whiff of fresh air over the past few days as the Tiruchi Corporation has started trying out a new technology, probiotic treatment to fight the odour.
![]() Simultaneously, the Corporation has also built a series of cubicles and toilets, both free and pay and use ones, to prevent people urinating in public places inside the bus stand complex. Dearth of clean public toilets and the reluctance of people to use the available ones has been a major problem plaguing the bus stand for several years now. Living up to its promise of improving the situation, the Corporation has put several free urinals, for men and women, and some of them are waterless toilets. The waterless toilets, as the name suggests, do not require flushing after every use. The toilets would be cleaned once in a day and would be directly connected to underground drains. “Such toilets are already in use in a few places in the country and we are trying it out at the Central Bus Stand to start with. Based on its success, we will install similar urinals across the city,” Corporation Commissioner K.Veera Raghava Rao told The Hindu on Sunday. The Corporation had earmarked about Rs.81.95 lakhs for improving sanitation inside the bus stand, including Rs.43.02 lakhs for building toilets and the rest for other works such as construction of drains. “We have provided 40 seats each for men and women. These apart, four pay and use toilets are also available inside the bus stand,” Mr.Rao said. Close on the heels of providing the toilets, the Corporation has decided to crack the whip and started imposing penalty of Rs.100 on persons found urinating in open places inside the bus stand. The Corporation rules already provide for the imposing of the fine, he said. New technology The civic body has also started experimenting with probiotic treatment to check the foul odour emanating from open urinals and toilets inside the bus stand. “This is an eco-friendly technology under which ammonia eating micro-bacteria is used to control the odour,” Mr.Rao said. Accordingly, a liquid spray is used three to four times a day inside the bus stand. The technology could be used to control foul odour from garbage also, Mr.Rao said. Depending on the success of the measures, the Corporation has planned to replicate them in other parts of the city. The civic body has already unveiled a perspective plan to check open defecation in the city by building toilets and cubicles across the city. Source : The Hindu Good Idea by the Commisioner

Walls along arterial roads don vibrant colours
![]() The next time you stop at a traffic signal, be prepared to be swamped by a riot of colours. Illegible graffiti and peeling posters on walls are being replaced by billowy clouds, vibrant blooms and rustic scenes, thanks to the city corporation's beautification project that accords a makeover to walls along arterial roads. It has been the norm for posters and graffiti to be pulled down and replaced with ‘stick no bills' notices, only to be defaced again. But major roads leading to the city airport, district court, government hospital and Srirangam temple are shrouded in colours by a team of painters from Chennai. “The tableaus vary with the place. While some places sport natural scenery like seashores and clouds, others emphasise on the ‘going green' concept with forests and fields. Traditional scenes depicting Tamil culture and temple architecture have also been portrayed,” says Murali, painter. For the team of artists from Chennai who have adorned roads in Chennai under the city beautification project there, the assignment is a departure from convention. “We are generally hired to paint portraits and caricatures of political persons and paint slogans for election campaigns. Apart from that we are approached by fan clubs of cine stars before film releases,” notes Murugan. The Chief Minster's visit apparently has speeded up the beautification process according to painters who were hard at work armed with brushes on Sunday. Apart from traffic islands that are spruced up, environmental consciousness is on the rise as boards and signs espousing green drive from couplets on keeping the cauvery banks clean to verses of green city can be spotted. But the project appears to treat beauty as skin deep for paintings juxtaposes with open drainages and rubbish heaps pose a paradox. “The paintings will invest the city with a new look and may curtail open defection to an extent. It can discourage posters and graffiti as people may think twice about defacing a beautiful painting than a plain wall,” believes C. Balasubramanian, president, District Exnora. “But painting walls alone will not provide long-term results unless adjacent drainages and pavements are maintained.” Source : The Hindu ![]()
