EDIT: Back on topic, I know this one was posted before some times, but this building in NYC looks ugly. It looks like the ugly boxes built in 1970's

It's not bad, but I prefer Beekman Tower/New York by Gehry.

It would look better without the antennas.
I can see the connection to castles - compare to Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City:

Great building the Quebec one!! I guess one of the biggest castle building...
Yeah the antennas possibly makes it looks even worse. Recently that "building" even obtained the status of protected monument (no comments, please ) and so I guess the awful antennas will be removed. The inspiration was drawn from the typical northern italy "mushroom shaped" castle towers, like this one from the milan castle:

Even if I think that the building it's awful, I at least recognize some degree of similarity...

Haji Ibrahim Nehramli, president of the Avesta Group of Companies, says the new building will be a whopping 1,050 m high with 189 floors.

The Azerbaijan Tower will be 200 m higher than the world's current tallest building - Burj Khalifa, and 50 m higher than the Kingdom Tower to be built in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The Avesta management originally planned to build a 560-m tower, but revised their plans, APA reported.

Avesta says it has already held talks with the companies that built Burj Khalifa.
The Khazar Islands are a development of artificial islands to be constructed in the Caspian Sea off Garadag, southwest of Baku.

The Avesta Group told Gun.Az that the first phase of the islands project will include residential and social facilities and restaurants and will be completed in 2016.

The Azerbaijan Tower will be built as part of the second phase. Construction is expected to begin in 2016 and finish in 2018-19.

The tower's wings are okay each by itself, but when taken as a whole, I don't know, something about it bugs me. However, I fully realized the extent of the disaster when seeing it next to Burj Khalifa in the comparative diagram. Anything that massive automatically becomes a monster, no matter how elaborate its architecture might be. Why doesn't any of these planners seem to understand it?

I've know that Milan-building for a bit more than 10 years, passively (images that come by), but never for a second it occurred to me that people would consider it as 'generally accepted to be ugly'.

It is a very striking buiding. The roof, the inverse flying butresses, the overhangs, it somehow to me is a very natural and familiar language in its medieval context. It seems like one of those strange unpretentious accidents that make medieval cities charming, even when it's from a very different age.

I'm happy it's a monument. It's on the list to visit for my visit to Milan in april.

ah, really, I google imaged it again, the thing is brilliant. It seems to be rather hidden, and it's butresses have classy art-deco details. It's the closest we got to the medieval-looking futurism of early sci-fi movies.

it works really well with the language of the city

Oh, and it is not brutalist. To begin with for the simple reason that it is not built in concrete - except of the exposed columns. It's mostly built in (red-ish) stone. Even more, its program might be modern (highrise), its form was if anything a reaction on the american modernist 'glass box' typology that was feasable at the time, and was in the sixties widely critisized for being anti-modern.
