Yeah but there are better ways to deal with that facade space. Some vertical lines of a different material, maybe.

801 South Street, Honolulu, Hawaii (under construction)

The blandest buildings I have ever seen. They are neither International Style nor postmodernist, they are just their own awful heaps. The colour scheme is dreadful as well. (turquoise with beige??)

What about this bad boy?

Brooke House - Basildon Town - Essex - England - UK:

image hosted on flickr

It a piece of post war Brutalism designed by Sir Basil Spence for the New Town - Basildon which was made for the London overspill (population overspill) after the war. It is considered ugly... but I do like it. It's part of the town. But I appreciate that most people will think this is ugly haha.

What do you guys think?

Agreed. The windows make it interesting. That's good, considering it's British architecture.

I wouldn't call that ugly. In fact it's quite nice, especially the base. The only part that annoys me is the brick, which looks a bit messy on the sides. Cover them up with a sleeker grey covering and you've got a great building.

Woah, Woah, Woah! That is not ugly!

That building is regarded a masterpiece of 1960's brutalist architecture in the UK! It's especially unique among residential tower blocks.

It's a listed building for a reason

I actually think it would look really nice if all the bricks were flushed the same color. I like it too, in a weird kind of way.

Kinda weird looking on the front and back, but it looks nice. Before now I thought that the only towerblocks Sir Basil Spence had built was Queen Elizabeth Square in The Gorbals, Glasgow. I guess this would be the appropriate place to put these pictures of QES seeing as they had a very bad reputation along with their brutal look.

They were demolished in September 1993.

That skyscraper has an interesting history actually. It was built in 1986 in the communist era during the oil boom when ROC was one of the richest countries on the continent. Built as one of Africa's tallest building's at the time, it was severely damaged in 1997 during the Congo civil war. When the war ended in 1999, the tower was pristenely rebuilt and repaired.

Problem is, due to its height, shape, tropical climate and materials used in construction and repair, it's become a bit of a white elephant in that it costs millions in maintenance per month! Rebuilding in 1999 actually cost double the original cost of the tower!

Actually, the building was an entire white elephant in itself. Built as the centrepiece of a 5 year plan, the building didn't serve any function, purpose, or fill demand for office space

It's not the prettiest skyscraper, but it's certainly one of the most interesting here

I'm indifferent about the ROC one, but Bangunan Lembaga is really nice.
