well yea people thought the same thing about the world trade center and the sears tower but i think thoughs were amazing buildings as well but no matter what the chicago spire will look ugly to me leaste form what i see and im sure i will say the same thing when its built

Agreed. I like most of Calatrava's work, but the Chicago Spire is awful. The only thing captivating about it is the height. The Chicago Spire is not the ugliest in the world, but the sheer size of it will make it hard to miss. You don't want your largest building to be an eyesore. This is one instance where I'm thankful this project didn't land in Toronto. You've got tonnes of great buildings in Chicago, but this isn't one of them.

Oosterbaken, in a suburb of Rotterdam. I am not fond of buildings that are wider at the top than at the bottom. And I don't like that tacky tulip theme. From a distance, they look like swimming spermatozoids. Not the ugliest building in the world, but ugly enough to show here, imo.

The Genex-tower is awesome imo, it's just that these pictures aren't the best available of this building. I love the way this tower welcomes you to the city of Belgrade (It's also known as Zapadna Kapija, or the Western Gate). I can imagine why people think it's ugly, but I like it a lot more than all the new bright and shiny (America look-a-like) structures that are built all over Eastern Europe (and the rest of the world).

^ Why? I also think these ones are approaching to the term 'buttugly'. Well, perhaps not the ugliest of the entire universe, but ugly nevertheless. They shouldn't be demolished for now, but at least someone should renovate them.

That's exactly how so many good architecture is ruined. Maybe some renovation of the Genex-tower would be good, as for the towers in Zagreb. But I think a good cleaning will do. IMO it will take some more decades before this brutal kind of architecture gets the appreciation it deserves. Like Usce-tower; I know it was bombed and a renevation was necessary, but I liked it more the way it was. But I'm aware few people will agree with me...

I know what you mean. I once hated the one below (Medical Faculty, Rotterdam, 1969) but it has grown on me; now I would hate to see it 'renovated'.

I can't see the picture for some reason, but I think you mean Erasmus MC. (I live in Rotterdam ) If you're talking about the white part of it, I totally agree. I've always hated it too, but it seems to get a little nicer every year. My only problem with it is that the huge complex as a whole is an obstacle between the residential areas an the park that surround it. Maybe they should rebuild in somewhere else
