Well, in the park that is in existence today, one can still see soms ruins of the fortress, which were hidden under the "foundations" (if one can call them that) of the Walled City. Also a few canons are visible in the park.

Some ruins of the old fortress (remnants of the Southern Fortress Gate).

The Fort as it looked in 1898.

The site today.

But anyway, keep the Ugly Scrapers coming!

As far as I know, no serious fires occured.... However, some Kung Fu fighting did take place there! (for example in Bloodsport, and ofcourse some heavy fighting in the classic: The Long Arm of the Law)

Here's a documentary about life inside the complex.

And staircases.... good question! I wonder if there is anyone alive who could tell you that up to the last staircase, because the complex was so amazingly... uh yeah... complex (...) haha

/edit: o yeah, these three scrapers above are hideous... Maybe the last one is the least ugly, but especially the second one... I don't even want to know in what city it is! It's that bad.

I would rather use the word "interesting", the building on the right however seem rather tacky.

this HK urban fortress is fascinating! It's more like a vision, can't really believe it was real once upon a time...

Sorry, little bit offtopic...

This link will get you 17 pages of the most interesting info on the Kowloon Walled City (the ugliest and therefore most kickass scraper in the history of human building.)

Actually it was torn down as late as 1994. (Evicted in 1993 under a lot of protests.)

But you're right, the Chung King Mansions are pretty awesome and dilapidated as well! And throughout Kowloon in particular and Hong Kong as a whole, there is enough urban dilapidation left to be admired.
