Good news from retail in the city centre! From the Merc:

Silver Arcade in Leicester to reopen in time for Christmas

A landmark Victorian shopping arcade is due to reopen in time for Christmas – more than a decade after it closed.
Developers started work on the grade II-listed building Silver Arcade in Silver Street, Leicester city centre, in August 2010.

Businesses and retail experts hope the £3 million restoration of the four-storey Victorian shopping arcade will give independent traders a boost.
Harborough London, the agent for the owner, said it is hoped the first units will be ready by September.

That's great news, although I can't believe it's been more than 10 years since it was open.

Pretty shocking that it was left so long, and that I now feel so old.

That needs to be marketed to high end stores. The independent market they're aiming for is too easy and I think they are selling themselves short. It needs to be marketed similar to how the exchange in Nottingham was done. Although its not as nearly as impressive as the exchange!

Brand Centre on Gallowtree Gate has closed down. Also Storm has closed down in the Highcross.

Storm had a sign of temporary closure a couple of weeks back.

Hello.

Not had any updates on here for a while.

Here's one from the Leicester Mercury from Tuesday, 4th September - "Highcross Leicester celebrates its fourth birthday today. Since opening on September 4, 2008, the shopping centre has welcomed almost 72.5 million visitors to date and continues to attract top brands to the city".

That's great news for the centre.

It's a shame some of the units are STILL empty (even a few in the newer part of the Highcross).

Anyone have any news of any new stores or potential new stores coming to the Highcross?

No new news that I can think of.

Btw the large vacant unit beneath Phoenix House apartments (Greyfriars) would make an ideal high-end destination stire with its latge windows and nice location.

Ed's Easy diner is open now. Looks good. Very 50's. You actually leave and get the sudden disapointing realisation your still in Leicester.

Christmas is only around the corner so fingers crossed there will a press release with new stores from the Highcross. I think we should petition for an Urban Outfitters.

That's awesome, been looking forward to Ed's Easy Diner opening so I'll definitely be visiting soon!

Less talk of Christmas, please.

Smile

Urban Outfitters sounds good. Their nearest store is in Birmingham on Corporation Street although Nottingham was meant to be having one but im not sure now. Highcross has plenty of empty units for new stores. Hopefully we might get the likes of a Ted Baker which was rumored or a Adidas which was also mooted to be opening at Highcross.

There's a poster on the old Clinton cards unit on Gallowtree Gate with Jessops on it. Are they relocating there or will it be an additional shop?

So yet another empty unit on Grimby Street

Had a work Christmas meal there last year. The food was shockingly poor and I was very disappointed with it. Nobody I was with ate their dessert as it was that bad.

Blimey. How did it stay open as long as it did?

The new Jessops will open in late October. It's a shame that they haven't created a major flagship store in the city in which they were founded.

Granby Street and Belvoir Street are looking really quite bad in terms of retail. To-let signs everywhere and no sign of improvement.

The hell is this 'city centre manager' doing, exactly?
