hard to say, it is more like after prep just waiting right now i think, but next month a contract is set for a famous german company to lay the foundation. so in december we will most likely see work finally. so this tower should finally start rising beginning 2014 then. the foundation work is set to be going on for 10 months in total.

I'd love to see it before 2020 but i really believe it's gonna be more a desire than a reality.

I believe completion is approx. 2017/2018

I believe, since the groundbreaking, piling and foundation work is slated to start in december, completion of the tower will be approx. 5 years later. We can compare it with The Burj, where it took 5 years. So most logic is a completion of the project 5 years from now, so around 2017/2018 is logic. The fun will start when we see the rise floor by floor, as happened with Burj Khalifa. I am sure we will be able to follow the building process in the same way. Burj was completed in 2010, and visited by me in 2012, so I'll be in Jeddah in 2019, 2020! And for those of you who can't wait that long: Come to Dubai and visit Burj Khalifa, it's just an incredible experience. Even if you have to travel half around the world it's worth the expenses!

sry but its a new century for skyscrapers, it breaks the 1000m mark and the construction time is i thing higher than 5 years. the burj have to complete in 4 years, did it? no it does 7 years
a real timeline for the kingdom tower is maybe this:
2013 - Beginning
2014 - foundation is completed
2015 - 50 floors
2016 - 100 floors
2017 - 140 floors
2018 - 180floors
2019 spire is completed
2020 official opening

a speed of 40 - 50 floors a year isn't that a litlle bit slow for a massive building like this? maybe the base takes longer bot at a height of 200 m 2 floors a week maybe?

^40/50 floors a year is nothing to scoff at. 50 a year would be about a floor a week. And with a building of this scale, you can bet they'll take their damn time making sure everything's perfect. I think if they started early 2013, a 2020 completion date sounds realistic.

They say because of the sloped walls of the structure and no setbacks formwork reconfiguration (unlike in burj khalifa) won't be ever necessary so it can go faster in theory.

In the case of Burj Khalifa, on the wings there were able to go as fast as one floor in 3 days, compared to one floor in 5 days (the fastest) for the core part.

It feels like it will require more than five years to complete such an unique building, maybe they set an earlier date of competion to keep it interesting?

^We've had people asking for pictures for two hundred pages now. Had there been any, they would have been posted already.
