Amazing building but I don't know why Prince Alwaleed would pick Jeddah and not Riyadh for a building this big.

Agreed. I think this will look rather lonely there by itself in Jeddah. It would look much better, imo, in the center of KAFD, where there would be some surrounding supertalls to balance it.

Isn't there a massive plan to build a huge cluster of skyscrapers around this? I remember seeing that in a vid of the Kingdom Tower

Yes it is called "Kingdom City", we do not have any details about the surrounding skyscrapers and infrastructure though as far as i know, other than that it is a 20billion dollar project.

WTF? Did all the workers disappear? It looked deserted in 2011, some people came on first half of 2012 and then dissipated again! What's going on over there?

That probably wasn't necessary but yeah people should keep more attention to what's being posted here. So again, picture from february 2012 shows pile testing. They did their job and they moved out. In december 2012 different company moved in to construct actual foundation for the tower. For those of us who question whether new pics posted from the site are legit you can see that residues of test barets visible on satellite image from october 2012 are also visible there, hence there is no doubt about current activity on the towers direct location. Here one of the new pics showing remaining of the test baret (they are visible on the satellite image as black dots surrounded by concrete).

Btw thanks to Rody for making that timeline. I was thinking of doing it myself, but got a bit lazy I guess

A couple silly questions: Are the test piles within the footprint of the building? If so, will the test piles help support the building?
