The amount of progress that has been made at this site in the last 5 years is just staggering.

From what site ? If your referring to the site that Rody69 found it on, I don't think that's going to be happening any time soon. I found the actual site where that picture originated from.
Look at the date

Did I read the thread title correctly? "Prep"? So they're definitely building this thing?

Correct . It's possible that Bauer already started with the foundation. But we've no pics as evidence

WHAT??? For the past 5 years I thought there was a 0% chance they'd actually build this thing. I can't believe they're really gunna go through with it. That's awesome!

EDIT: So is it gunna take 10 years to build this thing?

no, it will most likely be finished far before 2020. The date is set to be in 2018 and that date seems quite realistic to me, although a few delays are always expected for projects as big as this.

Sorry!! I couldn't bring this update earlier, as I'm getting so busy these days

** update**

-Bauer has almost finished all site preparations, and they are waiting for another 8 machines to arrive to the site, the machines list is:
1- 3 X Bauer BG40 Piling machines (with the power of 40nm of torque)
2- 2 X Bauer BG28 Piling machines (with the power of 28nm of torque)
3- 2 X Pumpers
4- 1X crane
PS: in addition to the machines that already on site>

Those machines are going to arrive to the Jeddah sea port on the 2nd of FEB and it's planned to start working on the site before the 9th of FEB 2013..
at the moment (21st of JAN 2013) they have marked all the drilling points on site (the number of piles is way more than 500!! ), the boundaries of the lake, the western and the southern footprint of the tower. and about to start deep drilling some piles ( I saw one of the piles has the number 589!! )
on the other hand, Bauer has finished their camp on the site.
<<Bauer has around 85 workers and Engineers on the site at the moment>>
