Dont expect any rise of construction above groundlevel in the coming months...

Kingdom Tower Project - Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Saudi Bauer awarded the Piling Works for the Kingdom Tower (One kilometre tower).

The Kingdom Tower - to rise in the northern district of the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah - will succeed the Burj Khalifa (also founded on Bauer piles) as the tallest building in the world. At 1,001 metres, it will be the first skyscraper in the world to break through the kilometer mark.

The Kingdom Tower Piles shall extend to depths exceeding 100 meters.
The works are expected to commence in January 2013 and be completed by September, 2013.

Architects appointed for Jeddah's Kingdom City
on Feb 11, 2013

Kingdom Holdings has announced that its associate, Jeddah Economic Company, has appointed a pair of architectural practices to carry out masterplanning for its $20bn Kingdom City project in Jeddah - of which the proposed 1km-high Kingdom Tower is to be the centrepiece.

The firm has appointed US-based Calthorpe Associates as Lead Masterplanner for the 5.3 million m2 Kingdom City development surrounding the world's tallest tower, while UAE-based Godwin Austen Johnson architects has been named urban architect.

The value of the contracts to the firms is $1.6m (SR: 6m), according to a statement issued to the Saudi stock exchange.

Kingdom Holding Co, which is chaired by HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, agreed a deal last year with contractor Saudi Binladin Group which will see the contractor invest SR: 1.5bn in building the project in return for a 16.93% stake in the company developing it, Jeddah Economic Company (JEC).

Kingdom Holdings retains a 33.35% stake in JEC, while Abraar International also holds 33.35% and Jeddah businessman Abdulrahman Hassan Sharbatly has a stake of 16.67%

At a recent meeting of investors, Prince Alwaleed said the tower is on "a solid strategic path".

The tower will cost around $1.22bn (SR: 4.6bn) to build, according to Kingdom Holdings. Architects for the tower project, US-based Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architecture, were appointed back in 2011 and a construction licence was granted to build the tower in February 2012. Saudi Bauer Group won a $40.8m contract to carry out piling work for the tower in November.

Eng. Talal Al Maiman, chairman and CEO of Kingdom Real Estate Development Company (KRED), said: “The careful strategic planning has paid off and the execution of the greatest Tallest building project in the world for the next years to come has started in our beloved country Saudi Arabia. Our country deserves no less than such a project.”

They will have to, sooner or later. As soon as the oil runs short, new sources of income are needed, same happened in the UAE

The arab gulf states have a much higher standard of living than USA and Europe

Saudia Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait. I am sure in the next decades more supertalls will appear in this region which are even higher than Jeddah Kingdom Tower.

People even dont work or less than 30 hours per week and get their 10,000 $ salary per month.

In Germany an engineer is working more than 40 hours and only get 2000 € salary per month. He almost pay 800 € rent.

And yet, with respect for the saudi forumers, my worst nightmare would be to live in this country... Money doesn't always mean happiness.

Seriously, that's completely ridiculous. You can't even compare the standards of living of cities like Jeddah or Dubai with those of Vienna or Bern. For a rich elite, it's certainly better to live in those states since there are tax advantages and so on. But you have to look at the human rights:
- Women have very few rights in those countries
- no freedom of religion
- homosexuality is illegal
- etc.

You may enjoy living in Saudi Arabia if you are a rich millionaire. However, there are so many surpressed people there. I know that complete freedom is never possible without anarchy, however in Western European countries you do have quite a lot of freedom, definitely more than in the Arab states. It's not only money, which defines the standard of living
