I agree, one big situational advantage the Kingdom Tower will have over the Burj Dubai is it's location by the water, the Red Sea. This greatly increases the chances that the tower will become a viable economic/tourist attraction assuming the Saudi government sees fit to allow this. Most of the tourists at first will probably be high-rolling business people, maybe down the road ordinary tourists will be allowed to visit, but the political situation in Saudi Arabia is still quite closed.

I've always disliked and found it strange that they chose to put the Burj Dubai smack dab in the middle of the desert, it seems a bit misplaced for such a landmark in such a small country as Dubai.

It's all going to depend on the Saudi royal family. If they choose to open up more, the tower may become synonymous with Jeddah & indeed the country, it definately will give Saudi Arabia a huge iconoclastic symbol that transcends religion & could attract people from all over, something that country needs if it wants to open up more & diversify their economy more.

Kingdom Tower has a lot of possibility for Saudi Arabia. Personally I like it's smoother design better than the Burj Dubai, it will be interesting to see how the tower differs in other ways like in construction, materials, etc..The views from that high platform would be truly epic!!

What?? The Burj Khalifa is almost right beside(within a few miles) of the Persian Gulf. I'm not going to look up exact measurements, but I would consider the Burj Khalifa to be ON the Persian Gulf, not smack dab in the middle of the desert. Like I said, Riyadh, would be considered "smack dab" in the middle of the desert.
No offense man, but it sounds like you need to do some research on the things you are commenting on. After all, The WTB hasn't been called the "Burj Dubai" since it opened in January 2010

Well, excuse me, but I haven't ever been to the Middle East. The photos I've seen of the Burj Dubai or whatever the hell you want to call it show nothing but desert all around it (except for some small resovoirs). I was making some basic observations/comparisons between the two buildings.

I think you'll find my points about Saudi Arabia to be pretty accurate. Jeddah is overlooking the Red Sea. Oh, and "no offense", but you need to check your attitude but I won't be intimidated by such remarks.

That's the problem. None of your points about Saudi Arabia have been accurate
And BTW, I think I have been nice in correcting your erroneous points about Kingdom Tower and Saudi Arabia. Have I been rude in any way?

Facts, check!
Attitude, check!

what a lot of people underestimate is the number of "slaves" in every single major country of the world. The Emirates only rank 88th in the global slavery index 2013, which is calculated relative to the size of the country. Interesting how this issue is being bashed there, but the same people are happy to ignore it in so many other parts of the world....

In the event of a fire breakout in the upper floors, how would rescue operation be done? Escape is going to be a big issue in this type of building.

Hi all.

Hi Zilze.

Most tall structures have areas of refuge with well laid out plans on how to get there in case of emergency. I would imagine this project will do the same.

This tower is, of course, exciting in it's own right, but I'm also hoping that surrounding infrastructure will yield some other tall towers eventually. Otherwise, this will look out of place.
Dubai, having an excess of 15 complete supertalls, is undoubtedly one of the most capable cities in the world to hold a building like the Burj, and even there, it almost looks tall enough to be out of place. I have no problem with them building a 1000+ meter tower in what is currently the "middle of the desert", as long as it won't always be that way.

That being said, I don't understand what is the big deal is about there being "no purpose or demand" for this building. Does there have to be skyrocketing demand just to build a tall building? Possibly the most iconic skyscraper of all time was empty for more than a decade after it was built.

There is an excessive preoccupation with function these days. Some of the greatest buildings of all time have had very little function, and yet are revered today simply for their artistry. Hopefully The Kingdom Tower will live up to that legacy, regardless of it functionality.
