Yeah it's very interesting but we are waiting for news about tower not about random mountain in Wales.

Well, it is a vanity project. But in a way you're right, because it would also be a vanity project in every other country in the world. Doesn't matter if you build it in KSA, China, USA, Norway, NZ, Zimbabwe, Argentina, a 1km tower in today's day and age is always a vanity project anywhere.

Of course you'r right. It would be a vanity project anywhere. No one is denying that. But the fact remains those towers are build where they are build. Somehow even china doesn't go that far with it's megaprojects. Actually all megatowers in china are focused as much on height as on usable space. And I'm pretty sure they could easily afford wtb if they wanted.

The success of the current tallest tower of course hinges on a whole lot of other factors, as in everything else that has been built in its host city so far, making it one of the world's major travel, trade, economic, etc. hub. So far we haven't seen much of the future plans for Jeddah, but what we've seen doesn't seem anywhere as well thought-out as the development Dubai has gone through in the past 20 years.

Someone took their "cranky" pill this morning.

I find that to be very interesting and since there is no real news about this tower its refreshing to see posts like his instead of every third post being "Is there any news yet" and the rest being about what a waste it either is or isn't (depending on one's personal opinion) to build this thing.

Currently 5 likes - 2 in his favour, so Id say more care than don't.

If you've ever walked up Snowden, it would mean quite a lot to you. Heck just getting the train up would give you a good idea just how high it is. In fact the railway station at the top of Snowden is probably about as high as Kingdom tower.

Let's enjoy the construction now.
Binladin is the constructor????

Wow... i always think that they were in demolition business only.

I always think of Mount Snowdon when relating this buildings height to something...

Mount Snowdon is huge! The view from the top is staggering; especially seeing as you're over looking many other mountains!

You can't say that a building almost as tall as this isn't impressive:

making random comparisons that are actually interesting to read is one thing, posting huge pictures another, but then again with few pictures it is hard to stay on topic in this thread.

Besides, us enthusiasts always do this kind of thing so it's nice to break the ice (a bit more) until we have construction progress. What about the "Burj-in-every-city" comparisons back when it was topping out / finished?

I said this because someone compared it to the eiffel tower which is like comparing apples and oranges really. The majority of know how for this project is of foreign origin. And saudi company that overlook the construction hire foreign company for the actual works (at least for the foundation).

But this is interesting topic so it would be nice if you could elaborate some more. Of course there will be some saudis working on this project, but I'm more interested in the saudi companies involved. Not sure what you mean by the architects. The smith&gill is american architectural firm. Also what Saudi construction/consulting companies working on the project do you know and what are they hired for?
The project is by SBG, they also built this

I'm a little bit surprised they didn't pour the raft yet, but at least the piling works are done!

Foundation work ends on world's tallest building

Saudi Bauer Foundation Contractors has completed foundation construction for the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah.

Saudi Bauer, a subsidiary of Schrobenhausen, Germany-based Bauer Spezialtiefbau, installed extremely long piles for the foundations of what is set to be the tallest building in the world.

The work involved sinking 72 piles measuring 1.5m in diameter to a depth of 110m, 154 1.5m diameter piles to depths of 49 and 89m and a 44 1.8m diameter piles to a depth of 50m – a total of 270 piles.

Drilling was carried out using BG series rigs produced by sister company Bauer Maschinen. The long piles were installed using two modified Bauer BG 40 rotary drilling rigs specially configured for long Kelly piles.

The Kingdom Tower will be the centrepiece of Kingdom City, a new urban quarter under construction on a 5km2 site in the north of Jeddah. With a planned height of 1,001m, the tower will overtake the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which at 828m currently holds the record as the world’s tallest building.
