Seriously - the area around the Burj Dubai looked close to this only 7 years ago. Look at it now ...

As with any WTS this will be much higher than the surrounding buildings but I'm sure the entire area will look good when completed.

i meant they arent building it to serve an actual purpose..dubai is almost the same thing

I know exactly what you meant...

The very tall structure in the middle of a new development is the center piece or focal point but there is no real need to build the WTS and never has been.

The fact that they do build them is a bonus to skyscraper lovers - hense the reason this forum is so popular.

Bizzy - I agree the pics don't really show they have started prep for the Kingdom Tower but they do garner some hope (for me at least).

There has never been a need to build Burj Dubai in the first place, let alone other 1km+ towers. I'm pretty sure that once(if?) the funding is secured, it will turn out Kingdom Tower is twice as expensive as BD. If they built like 5 400m towers, they would still cost less than KT. What's the point then? Illusions of grandeur? Concept of proof?
Still, if this gets built, I will personally bow to the creator of that tower

The middle east is going nuts. With so many towers in the region won't there be an excess of office space?

The same point as having the Eiffel tower in Paris and the Atomium in Brussels...

One thing is for sure. All of these skyscrapers are no "pyramids". Even with extensive maintenance, they will last no more than 200 maybe 300 years.
That does beg the question. Are we really building economically sustainable skyscrapers?

Cause from many peoples’ perspective all of these construction projects are a complete waste of resources.

Yes, I understand your point, but who builds a building over 3000 ft to be "economically sustainable". They don't build these buildings because they run out of room or need them-they build them to get publicity and make an impact. I don't think they are thinking about 300 years into the future right now. Besides, nothing lasts forever. One day the pyramids will become dust too. It will just probably take longer for the pyramids to disintigrate then for these supertalls to do so. Heck, who knows, in 300 years 3000 ft may be so short that they would demolish it anyways. And think back 300 years before today. 1709? The words tallest building back then was probably only 300-500 ft. in height. Now the world's tallest building is in excess of half a mile. A lot can change in 300 more years! Stay tuned until then!

Yes, that is true.....for now. But then why would anybody care whether or not a building is going to be worthless in 300 years anyway?

There is none because they haven't decided on the architect yet, which they will do soon. The only thing we know pretty sure is that it's going to be 1,001 meter tall, and the World's Tallest in all categories.

I reckon it will be far from 1,000m mark, that way they'll have some kind of chance to compete with NHT, but there's a chance they aren't bothered about that.

they'll have to find a way on how to clean the windows. My guess would be water sprayers on each of the windows. Like that they could clean the windows as much as they would want to

I'm living near a mountain, which is 1600 meters high. It's pretty difficult to realize that this tower will be as tall as this mountain.
