Once again, they will build a whole city around it. And a 1km tall icon of architecture is more interesting than a bunch of functionalist low rises.

You post that just beneath a picture of a 300 meter (!) tall fountain....

The whole area must get sprayed with tiny particles of sticky salt water when it's windy. That to me is impractical and a waste of money.

Most beautiful buildings are a waste of money for the investor. But luckily some of them get build. Otherwise everybody would live in commieblocks without parks, street art and monuments.

Do you walk around central (historic) Madrid, Paris or London and think:

- Gosh! What idiots build this city. Imagine the money they could have saved?

This building will cost exponentially larger amounts of money than any of those beautiful historic buildings did; and it really isn't very interesting architecturally, it looks like a taller, less interesting version of The Shard. Height doesn't make a building beautiful, but it does make it more expensive. I just think that it would have been money better spent if it was shorter and well, better designed. But whatever, it's their oil-money to waste.

It's the Mid-East, What did you expect? Those sheikhs are just searching for a way to loose their money. In my eyes it almost seems like they bother to be THAT rich. So they don't mind spending a dollar or a grand extra.

The way that you talk about the Arab in the last few comments isn't polite! If you're going to pay from your pocket, then you have to bemoan!

If the tower is being built in one of the western countries, most of the people would say WOOW! It's the best tower ever.

Most of the big projects like the Kingdom CITY doesn't belong to one man or company, it's more than one party. And usually this kind of projects gives more money than spent on it! Don't forget that there will be hotels, HUGE malls, restaurants, etc. and that help to cover the cost of the project.

Thanks!

I think the design is worth the money. Sleek and simple. They already tried a well detailed supertall in Mecca and most people dislike it.

I totally agree. I always find it annoying that whenever a mega project is announced in the Gulf States, some people say... "the sheikhs are wasting money again... or they are wasting their oil money..."

For me, I have a great respect for this man and his partners, because they are investing money in their own country. Many other businessmen never cared about that.

this is actually cheaper than the Burj Khalifa and the Burj is at least 172m shorter. so taller building doesn't always mean more expensive.

I presume the land is also cheaper than BK's, since there's nothing around it. Then once it's built the land becomes more valuable.

Also those who complain that too much height is empty should acknowledge that the floor area at such a height is too small to fit out. Space that high would require a much fatter building, or one that doesn't taper, which is structurally unfeasible at this time.
