That's what i was thinking about as well.

I have to admit that it looks really cool, but when a fire breaks out you are pretty much screwed...

The buildings look nice, of course, but it seems to me that ME leaders try to emulate the exterior of western civilization without understanding its foundation. It is fine as long as they have oil, but oil will run out sooner or later. They should invest everything into infrustructure - education, high technology, energy. Instead, they are building what essentially is toys.

Structure set to be the tallest building in the world

Saudi investment company Kingdom Holding is approaching more contractors for the deal to design and build its planned 1-kilometre-tall Kingdom Tower in Jeddah.

In September, Kingdom Holding had shortlisted three contracting groups for the deal. They were South Korea’s Samsung Corporation with Dubai-based Arabtec Construction, Australia’s Multiplex, and the Saudi Binladin Group.

Contractors had expected the contract to be awarded within weeks, but according to sources close to the project the developer now wants to consider additional proposals from other contracting groups that may offer a lower price.

Kingdom had also shortlisted various consultancy groups in September. They were the US’ Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architecture, and US-based Pickard Chilton in partnership with UK-based Hyder Consulting (MEED 11:9:09).

If Kingdom Holding goes ahead with the ambitious project, it will replace the 818-metre Burj Dubai as the world’s tallest building.

The Capital Market Authority is also planning a smaller high-rise project at the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh.

It is prequalifying contractors to build a 400-metre-high headquarters building. This structure will be higher than the 309-metre Kingdom Tower, currently the tallest building in Riyadh

I think that two red makered informations proves that design posted page back is the one in competition for KT. The thing is if it will be the choosen one.

Me too, I think 1km is a little too modest (yes, I said that), 1.6km sounds and looks more impressive. If the design is done right, we could have a potential stunner.

I really don't care if it's 1 or 1.6 km. I want to see an impressive beautiful design.

if they are going to build a mile high tower it will take many decates before they beat that, so I would like to see a 1km high tower so the race goes on!

People need to walk b4 they can run...
We've just had a massive breakthrough with the Burj Dubai, which raised the benchmark height for a building like almost no other building in history. Yet even as the burj is still to open/reach completion, a building on the drawing board which crushes it by almost 200m is too small?? One step at a time. To build twice the height of the current tallest is madness at this moment of time.

I think it will be 1000m high. The article says it is design competition for 1000m KT. The SOMs proposal IS as we can see 1000m so i doubt the other would be so much different in hight. Besides i believe they (designers) receive some general instructions about price and construction_time, so if one is 1000m others will probably be around.

Yes, 1km seems much more realistic.

Twice the height of BD? I'd highly doubt that!

Yes, 1km seems much more realistic. And i don't mind if the top ~200m won't be occupied. If it helps create a harmonic shape, so be it.

Twice the height of BD? I'd highly doubt that!

As long as it's designed as well as the Burj Dubai I'm not too bothered about the height. Building 1km itself is a milestone in hard times.
