And this was about 1996.
Today especially in asia a 400m+ building isn't a big deal, astonishing how much can change so fast
One of my first books as well . Loved just how nicely it was laid out - fitting for a vertical book on tall buildings.

But yeah, it's pretty amazing even since the Petronas Towers were completed as to how fast so many other towers have surpassed them. A big deal in 1998 and certainly to Malaysia (as they are stunning buildings to see in person), but height-wise, not quite as much now.

If you could've asked any of us back then to believe that in barely 10 years, a building would exist that's (almost) double the height, I don't think we could have fathomed that!

I think a hypertall should have the magic kilometer limit. I hope we'll see one proposed soon. The Kingdom Tower isn't truly a kilometer building since it reaches the height only with a spire

Btw I agree, one day hypertalls will be as common as highrises are today

cute indeed

not a single building in Dubai, nor Shanghai makes the list, but Frankfurt makes the top 50 ( what an upsidedown world )

For the record, this thread sees this EXACT topic every fifty pages or so. The same things are said every time, albeit by different people.

It was never fun nor interesting.

Also, seems like Kingdom Tower is fast approaching a major milestone - when the tower is taller than it's wide. With an Y shaped footprint, that might be a little hard to judge exactly, but hey, that milestone was never exact science to begin with.

I do believe the past decade has been the fastest height growth of man made structures ever. If it's by height ratio or just additional height to the last decades predecessor. (Maybe the pyramids had a greater ratio to their predecessor)

I have the newest version (2013) of the same book (with the BK on the cover).
Some good reading in there for sure.

I visited KL a couple of weeks ago and went to visit the Peronas Towers every day, twice a day - day and night. For my money's worth, their still the most gorgeous towers on the planet. Height isn't everything.

By the way that floor is level 7, not 10, as the three basement floors of the core are exposed at the moment and will be landscaped later so that the floor which is currently the fourth level above ground will become the ground floor/level (or level 1-depending in where you are from).

Brief structure progress summary:

-Level 10 has emerged out of the central core jump-form = Level 12 of the central core has been cast; rebar preparation for Level 13

-Level 4 has emerged out of the core wing jump-forms on all 3 wings = Level 6 of the core wings have been cast; rebar preparation for casting the Level 7 core wings.

Many thanks for the photograph updates everybody!

Sorry Rahmah and everyone else, but I can't quite estimates the heights yet since the final height of the building is still yet to be confirmed. However I will try my best once I have got my progress diagrams up and running, when I can make a bit more sense of it all, which will hopefully be by the end of June once my A-level exams are finished for this year!

what if i, a non-muslim, would like to visit mecca???? i cant... what if you, a non-christian, would like to visit the vatican? you will always be welcome. same with any hindu holy sites, same with bhuddist sites, etc...

saudi arabia is very selective. it only allows what it thinks is worthy of visiting. only north korea is like that in the world.
