i still have the bad feeling that it may be changed or pushed to another date or something on last minute.

edit: at least within next week its supposed to start, so we will see

Hi all.

Yes rumours are rumours ...
That part of the world is very secretive in regards to big projects. Using the BK as an example, there was precious little info filtering out through the cracks during the entire foundation works - over 9 months. The first real press article with any substance was about the pouring of the raft.

I wasn't here then but have since got all the threads and there was very little credible info there either. I expect this will be the same.

There were renders of some of the earlier designs of the BK out at that time though. I would hope we will at least see some for this project soon.

the project is planned to start next week. i kinda wonder why we do not have any new news regarding the project. Either they try to keep things secret, the final design and the planned shedule or they have stumbled over problems and it might not start next week at all. I'm afraid it is the latter, but i really hope it starts soon. Can someone who lives in Jeddah give more details about the preparation work?

A birdy told me that the tower will have 154 floors and a main structure height of 614 meters, followed by a spire section.

The design is heavily influenced by BK with a central cone-shapped section and three wings that tappers with the height. The other considered design by SOM was also similar. The tower is referred internally as the 1 km tower, however the birdy couldn't see the top height.

As per design the piles should go up to a depth of 40 - 50 meters, however the results of the site tests were negative.

I seriously hope this birdy is wrong..That would make less floors than BK but about 200 meters more height? Design heavily influenced by BK??

I was hoping for something new..Something different...I'm sure taht design will be great, but it wouldn't be that nice to see something similar to BK..

Seems plausible. From what I've seen in the documentaries about Burj Dubai, structurally, the three-winged design was one of the reasons it could go that tall, because it functioned like a tripod, giving it the extreme stability needed for such a height. It would seem only logical that a similar approach be used for an even taller tower. All conjecture, of course.

Well it is some idea of that tall tower, but remember that Nakheel Tower supposed to be even taller and had quite different design than BK.

Yeah, but Nakheel Tower wasn't designed by the same guys that also did Burj Dubai ... ahem, Khalifa.
