Even in Tokyo, NY or Chicago that building would make no sense. It`s marketing. It`s not your money, so who cares.

They push the boundary of human construction to new limits. That all what`s matters. Now we admire the pyramids build for a ruler who believed in gods noone believe in now. Also the nickname of the Empire State building was Empire empty building, because they build it during difficult economic times and it was rather empty at the beginning.

A few days ago someone asked how to take a screenshot of earthcam:

Changing the parameters in the link:

gp1 or gp2
date yyyy/mm/dd/hhmm - mm 00 or 15 or 30 or 45

I just find funny how everytime someone says something bad about the tower , even if it is not done with a bad intention every forumer from Arabia Saudi gets so butt hurt and sarcastic.

I like the tower but I don't get why everyone who likes it has to be so defensive about it ...

There's nothing ultimately good, or absolutely evil. The best human intentions devastate entire ecosystems of our planet. And sometimes, when a catastrophe happens - it may create a "blue ocean" type of niche for such a devastated ecosystem. There is often a pure truth and complete deception - it's quite often like white or black, but there are shades of grey among good and evil.
This mega-project is not an exception to this rule. The main reason for it to be built - is the triumph of one man's wealth over those who didn't have much chances, and the glory of his conceit.

I love the design of this building and cant wait for it to be complete but I also think "its in the middle of nowhere" and think it will look awfully lonely for quite some time.

I assume for us out of the Middle East, it just seems nonsensical, out of normal city growth and planning perhaps? How can a city a 3rd of the size of Manhattan sustain and fill such a building of such size and expense?
Perhaps someone who lives in the Middle East who travels can help with this?

In NYC, Chicago or especially that London skyline this building would not make sense either. Just because its big and tall doesn't make it work somewhere. Id say the closest would be Shanghai where it could meet the growth and fit into the current building heights, but the design of this building does keep it pretty localized to Arab countries.

How do you figure Jeddah is 1/3 the size of Manhattan? Quick google search says Manhattan has 1.6 mio ppl and Jeddah has 4.2 mio ppl. I never tought a city of 4 million people to be "in the middle of nowhere", but that's just me. If there were less regulations in the US there would be taller towers there aswell.

The Middle East is now the business hub between Europe and Asia. SA are now following what UAE are doing and creating a future beyond the oil production.

Unfortunately, it's too late to follow now. UAE has achieved it by far. Now we can't harbor any illusions about the oil price anymore: it will be only dropping. Sadly, but too obvious. Sorry to disappoint.

Not sure if that was directed at me but I'm not from Saudi Arabia. Currently living in the U.S. and still don't take any of the criticism of this tower seriously because most of it is obviously politically motivated. I mean I highly doubt these same critics would be voicing any concerns if this was being built in their country.

The unoriginality of the comments doesn't help either.

Posts on this thread:

30% talking about the slow progress of JT.
50% talking about the oil price.
10% people defending JT.
10% useful posts actually talking about JT, photos of its progress and its design.

Seriously can we just stop talking about the oil prices? I know its been mentioned 50,000 times before but people still can't get the message.

Back to JT, the construction animation on the previous page is very nice, but according to it, will cladding really only start to be added to the tower once it is around 400m+ in height. Why would they start adding the cladding so late any reason for that? And also, the current state of JT, are the grey slabs we see only the cores and elevator shafts or also the actual floorspace around them as well?

I should have said NYC which I believe is around 10 million (just looked about 9 million so roughly half the size of NYC).

Well I quoted "middle of nowhere" bc that seems to be the popular belief and youre correct, i dont exactly believe its in the middle of nowhere either. But I think for us in the west, it does seem like a curiosity to its purpose and reason since it appears there's such not many skyscrapers (having a difficult time finding a nice shot of Jeddah)? And the google maps seems to make it about 11 miles x 6 miles in perimeter. 4 million people is a respectably sized city, but a building so grand seems so strange.

Dont get me wrong though, i can't wait for this one.

It's not about these photos, he means if you drive 15 miles you are in nowhere. That's not understandable for 'western' people. There is always something there
