Maybe that’s why the contractor is almost bankrupt....
Actually most would, Lets start with the BK in Dubai, then we can look at all the growth around cities in Arizona or Nevada, it was bare dessert until the building projects changed it. Even in NYC the two biggest projects today are going up in railroad land reaching over the trains .

Bad example, you just made my point . BK wasn’t finished of the oil price crisis. They needed the oil dollars from Abu Dhabi. That project almost bankrupted emirate of dubai.

No private company would built such high a tower, why? Not profitable. Otherwise those 1000-1200 meter towers are built in London, New York where you have big banks who can actually pay the rent bill.. nevertheless even for them it will be to expensive and inefficient to rent such an high building.

Its not just about the building itself. One high megatall can (and will) change the infrastructure of its whole surrounded areas. Another BIG pro reason is that its a new landmark and will increase tourism. Just imagine Hamburg now, you will immediatly think of the Elbphilharmonie. Imagine Dubai, you immediatly think of the Burj Khalifa or the Burj al Arab. These are important landmarks. I think in a city like New York they won't work as good as here where the surrounded area is empty. It will be a huge plus for the infrastructure, tourism and will create a new and modern part of Jeddah. It will also change the whole image and imagination of Saudi-Arabia in the Western countries, which is very important and also a huge plus.
And i don't even believe that this is all.. I just heard somewhere that the Burj Khalifa or The Dubai Mall were visited more often than New York in one of the last years.. so thats pretty huge I think. I believe that infrastructure and tourism are the main points. Its not the building itself which will make the most money, its the whole city/country. So I do also believe that its not just one private company who build such a building, must be more than that, but I don't know about that :S

Your question was who would build in the middle of the desert, and all of the projects listed were built in the middle of nowhere. BK was finished as was the mall and all of the building around it, so it is no longer standing in middle of open space.

BTW these towers are not built in London or NYC because they are not permitted, they both have restrictions on the maximum height a building can be.

Dont believe them, they will keep gossiping and gossiping until the project is completed, and rising high in the sky then they will find something else to gossip about.
