Construction of such structure would take decades, even Abraj-al-Bait would look like a sand castle

Anything between one kilometer and one mile would be spectacular. Good point in that article though about it being in the middle of nowhere where none of the materials are produced making it that much more impractical.

What are some of the proposed floor areas of this? I only saw a cubic feet amount mentioned for volume. If it was anywhere near a mile high and well over 50% floor plates, I'd expect at least 8 million sq ft

This is just talking, until we see a real design, we may as well resort to waiting

Why is this even needed? A vertical city? Or is it just bragging rights?

I have a feeling that it won't be completed until at least 2022 if it's really a mile high.

This news just shown up on the saudi subforum. I'm not even sure what it suppose to mean since as far as I remember Kingdom Tower has been approved long time ago, and if the magazine it originally appeard on is reliable, but anyway here it is (translated by google):

Approval to begin implementation of the (Kingdom Tower) in Jeddah along the 1600 meters and the cost of 112 billion riyals
Approved by the Saudi government, on Sunday, April 10, 2011, to direct the building (Kingdom Tower), which will be the tallest skyscraper in the world, according to the newspaper (The Daily) issued on the device (Alaibad) .. The tower will be built, which will be 1600 meters tall, in the city of Jeddah in the Western Region, at a cost of $ 30 billion (113 billion riyals, almost).
The building will contain offices, housing and hotel .. It may be difficult to imagine how this will be a giant tower, which will look like (Khalifa Tower - 820 meters) in Dubai dwarf in front of him.

Oh my God if this actually happens. I'll be surprised. One mile high, it's funny how they're going for an American unit, the mile.

1600m, really? Althought I would love to see this happening I have my doubts. If you want to bring worlds attention with the height why double the height of the tallest structure? 1000m would be perfectly enaught, and still would cause rather loss than profit.

We'll see what is true, but until some respective agency (like meed) report on the height I will stay calm.

Yeah, I know, I know, 1600 is seriously high..All those "news" could be just an approval of new design after soil test fail last year and this number 1600 is probably just for an attention..

Mile-high business hub: Saudi Royal family plans £12billion building so tall it will take 12 MINUTES to reach top by lift
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 6:46 PM on 11th April 2011

The Saudi Royal family today unveiled plans to construct the world's tallest building - which will be an incredible one MILE high.

Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia will be 1.6km tall (one mile) when it is completed and consist of hotels, offices, luxury apartments and a shopping centre.

The structure will be twice the height of the world's current tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and FIVE times as tall as Britain's highest building, The Shard.

It will take a staggering 12 minutes to reach the top of the £12 billion building in the escalator.

The megastructure will boast a staggering 12 million cubic square feet of interior space - 12 times more than Number One Canada Water in London's Canary Wharf.

It is being financed by the Saudi Royal Family-owned Kingdom Holding Company - which is the nation's largest company.
KHC, which has shareholdings in Apple, McDonald's and Amazon, has employed American company Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture who designed the Burj Khalifa

Skyscraper specialists Emaar, which built the Burj, are understood to have won the contract to construct the Kingdom Tower, which will be built outside the Red Sea port city of Jeddah as the centre piece of a new 80,000 population city.
But the announcement has been criticised with one design expert describing the idea of another 'phallic tower' as 'futile'.

Rory Olcayto, deputy editor of The Architects' Journal, said: 'The race to build the highest skyscraper is quite futile - where do you stop?

'There's always a lot of British know how driving these projects which shows how important UK architects are on the world stage.

'But these buildings are missing the point and are a symbol of an old fashioned way of thinking.

'It's much better to look at something like the 3D China Central Television Headquarters in Beijing rather than a thrusting phallic tower.'

Exactly. I Love how Smith's office stated they have no involvement in this project. but yet I was reading an article about one of his Senior Architects and they even mentioned that there working on a confidential supertall tower project in the Middle East. I just wish they would release some renders!! Fury posted those model pic's not to long ago. But there was a design change at the base. Which then lead to the rebid. So hopefully we get some nice renders soon and get the ball rolling
