Some sources indicated that the government just approved the project. These news sources seem very confident although they didn't bring anything new. However, the claimed approvement is not mentioned in any Saudi newspaper, The Saudi Press Agency, KHC, A+G, or even Jeddah Municipality.

I'm starting to get interested in this project again, after so many disapointments.

When was this first proposed or approved?
And the prep status, is that before or after approved? Does that mean like site prep or something, in other words past the approval phase?

Hi all.

The press is funny sometimes ...
- 12 minutes to reach the top in the escalator ...
- 12 million cubic square feet of space ...

Who proofreads this shit ?

Anyway - sure seems to be a glut of 'no news' news articles right now.

I would be happy with a km. - happier with a mile - happier yet to see a render or some actual info from a credible source.

Ray.

To answer my own question I see it's n the "proposed supertalls" forum, so I'm guessing prep comes before approved. And yeah there is no real news here.

Even in the Dutch news today:

http://www.nrcnext.nl/blog/2011/04/1...een-mijl-hoog/

For the non-Dutch, the title says "Saudi-Arabia constructs a one mile tower"... That says enough... Nothing new in there too.

apparently the 'news' is just some cheap made-up story.

UPDATE: A representative of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture wrote us to say that all reports of their involvement with the Kingdom Tower are "based on anonymous, unofficial sources." He added that the firm is not working on a mile-high tower design and that they are not responsible for any of the renderings that have appeared on the internet.

The news is presented even in the Italian newspapers

whoever made up this story, he did it in a proper way with a world wide spread press release

If they do build this I wonder how long construction will take. Not counting delays, I wouldn't be surprised if it takes nearly a full 10 years. Since the soils tests showed the area to be quite unsuitable, it'll have to have a massively large and/or deep foundation to counter it. I hope it's real.

Surprised to see how widespread the news is, so it's just a chain reaction started by a hoax report, then?

Probably the New York Times, they set the gold standard for making stuff up.

I wonder how long it'll take to build this giant.

Didn't burj khalifa take about 5 years?

5,280ft high tower to act as anchor for 8.9 square mile development in Saudi Arabia

The revered Burj Khalifa by Skidmore Owings and Merrill is soon to be overshadowed as news comes that plans submitted by Kingdom Holding Company for a 5,280ft high tower in Jeddah have been approved. Newswire Windsor Genova has reported that the ‘Kingdom Tower’ project was given the green light last month, and named Adrian Smith of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill as the architect for the scheme.

In an unconventional move, Kingdom Holding Company has planned to design and construct the record-breaking tower before encircling it in a commercial and residential development, creating a ‘city within a city’ on the outskirts of Jeddah. Omrania & Associates with HOK have been selected to draw up the masterplan, comprising residential units, retail space, office blocks, a beach resort, hotels and an educational institution.

Situated only a five minute drive from King Abdul Aziz Airport and twenty minutes from the centre of Jeddah, the 8.9 sq mile scheme’s prime location indicates the high potential for an influx of tourists. The new city will be designed to accommodate 80,000 residents with space to cater for up to the additional million tourists that are expected to visit the incredible Kingdom Tower.

In terms of scale, it is estimated that a lift journey to the uppermost level of this 275-floor structure will take 12 minutes, with the Burj Khalifa’s 828m shrinking in the wake of the Kingdom Tower’s 1,609m height. Similarly, the highly celebrated Kingkey Tower in Shenzhen is only destined to reach 441m, while Guangzhou’s Canton Tower stands at 610m high. Should this lofty new building been seen through to realisation, it will overshadow every other ‘tall’ tower in the world and push the boundaries of architectural design in a way many never thought possible.
