Assuming the construction was quality this would have to take the better part of a decade to complete, hence if it really is going to be built, and really is going to be a mile high, it will probably finish sometime around 2020. I can imagine just how long just the foundation will take and how substantial it will have to be to support this in such an area. Remember, previous soil tests showed the area to be inadequate. Hence, to make up for that, the foundation will have to be humungous and/or extrememely deep.

I don't know how fast the elevators will go but I'm sure the core and elevators will take up a ton of the space and will probably have to be pressurized to maintain comfort. Here is a picture from a children's book on skyscrapers stating that the max comfortable elevator speed is 22 mph, it also talks about the future of skyscrapers.

A building this tall, in a desert location, should nearly be able to simultaneously heat and cool itself by circulating it's own air; surely the top will be much cooler than the bottom. Window cleaning is also sure to be a chore

Hi huizer.

The Burj Khalifa excavation started in Dec 2003 and is still not fully complete. Best guess on completion is a couple of months. If so the construction phase will be 7 years / 6 months. This is completion of the whole of the works - top out was over 2 years ago.

Not relevant to your question but let's not forget the planning phase and conceptual phase before that was probably a year or two before construction began.

Construction times differ greatly from project to project, but if this is to be a km. high it will take at least as long as the BK. As for a mile high, it could take near a decade.

Any height that gives us a new WTS will be exciting. A mile high - in my lifetime ?!? - would be fanf***ingtastic !!!

Is there even a serious or more recent render for this yet?

I'm just picturing 8 or 10 of the tallest buildings around here stacked on top of each other and it's just unimaginable, hard to believe this is real. I've heard even seeing the BK in real life is spectacular, and that pictures don't capture what it's really like, which is true for most things, just imagine something nearly twice as high, and likely bigger. It's such a giant step ahead of anything done before I don't know who would volunteer to design it, just think of one tiny mistake in construction and an engineer deems it unsafe and it gets halted and condemned.

i say build it, even though it may take a decade, itll mean new advances in technology, carpentry, archtitecture and engineering, if Suadi wants to do it, let em do it, nobody should be getting in the way, ive hear a lot of negative comments, from the other skyscraper website, im a carpenter myself, so i am in favour of this, this is definately the future.

I really doubt that. In 100 years the construction could be easily done by robots. Well... I believe so
Anyways I find Sagrada Familia building as bizzare. How can it take so long?

The donations are plentiful, they more than cover the churches budget- it is the fact that the detailing must remain loyal to gaudi's original design amongst other factors that this tower takes so long- crafting stone into worlds tallest church is VERY different from crafting steel into worlds tallest tower... Neither are easy, but glass and steel are far easier to build with.

@kt

I think it's a bit hasty to be changing the thread title, that article doesn't confirm anything, the height is not set in stone.

@Mike

Whachusay?

I think he means the model shown on the website image is ugly. It's definitely not creative. Then again, at that height, they can't afford much screwing around with the design, it has to be a pretty much symmetrical regular polygon. I think the bottom looks too small, considering how much core it'll take to support this the whole bottom will be core, almost. This is just so high that it's getting back to the old problem we had with stone and such, the bottom [walls] must be so thick that it becomes illogical. Just look at how huge the core is on the Shanghai Tower so far, I just heard it won't thin out until floor 51.

Shanghai Tower has thicker core than BK, also deeper foundations and longer piles(i think). Building anything like this will require redefining structural engineering and we may as well see completely new structural design. Maybe that's why we still haven't seen anything

Ah, so Jeddah would like to point out to Dubai that they in fact have the "larger *****". I love this compensation game. Wonder who's next.

I don't think anyone posted this article yet:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-building.html
April 12, dailymail.co.uk
I'm sure it's just the same news

Edit, oh yeah I've definitely seen that already, anyway I like the render it shows in the comparison diagrram the best, where it has the two buildings next to it connected to it.
