EWR/JKF/LGA/SWF/TEB | New York & New Jersey Area Airports
The terminals of John Fitzgerald Kennedy International Airport are undergoing renovation or demolition.
A new Terminal 1 opened in 1998, replacing an earlier Terminal 1 built as a hub for eastern airlines which was demolished to make way for the new one. Terminal 2 (born 1962) and Terminal 3 (born 1960) should be merged by Delta Airlines as a single modern terminal in the future. Terminal 2 is the most boring of the terminals and Terminal 3 has an ellipse footprint. A $1,400,000,000 Terminal 4 Opened in 2001, replacing an earlier International Arrivals building. A new terminal 5 is currently being constructed inporating the historic TWA Flight Centre structure built in 1962. The peripheral air-side portions of terminal 5 have already been dismantled to make way for the new 26-gate terminal, having a conventional hub-&-spoke design. http://www.designbuild-network.com/p.../3-jetblue.jpg As of August 2007, no plans as to the future of Terminal 6 (built 1970), currently occupied by JetBlue once the airline's new terminal becomes operational. Terminal 7 was built in 1970 and was refurbished two times, 1991 and 2003. Terminal 8 (1960) and Terminal 9 (1959) are currently undergoing redevelopment as one single terminal for American Airlines hub operation. The new terminal consists of a main building and a satellite. The airport is being built in four phases. Terminal 9 has already been demolished and Terminal 8 should have completed its dismantling by now. |

OOH! JFK! The only airport in the world that has its airlines build and customize their own terminals.

I don't think it's an advantage. All terminals are pretty small and inconvenient to walk and take air train to anywhere. If you have to wait in airport for long time, it's really boring. a better redevelopment plan (a wild one) is to demolish all terminals and build a massive one under one roof. |

Terminal 6 is now closed and is expected for demolition to make way for future expansion of Terminal 5. It will be the first building designed by I. M. Pei to be demoed. Terminal 5 may be considered inexpandable, so why not demolish both Terminals 6 and 7 for another Mega Terminal? Also, demolish Terminals 2 and 3 and either build a brand-new terminal with a distinctive flying saucer-shaped roof similar to the existing Terminal 3 or expand Terminal 1.

Delta Eyes JFK Airport Renovation as Business Travel Soars
15 June 2010 The Wall Street Journal Delta Air Lines Inc. is close to announcing the renovation of its outdated terminals at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport amid an intensifying competition for the city's business-travel market. The airline has been in talks for months with the Port Authority Of New York & New Jersey about funding a move that is expected to include demolishing the landmark Pan Am Worldport terminal at JFK to make way for new facilities. Delta President Ed Bastian said at an industry conference that an announcement is expected within 60 days involving the Port Authority and "several other players." "It is the worst facility that we operate," Mr. Bastian said of Delta's JFK terminals, acknowledging that they contributed to relative weakness in securing business travelers. Delta is involved in a four-way battle for New York traffic against AMR Corp.'s American Airlines and its new partner JetBlue Airways Corp., as well as Continental Airlines Inc. A rebound in the domestic business-travel market has emerged as a key driver in the recovery of revenues seen across the U.S. airline industry. |

Delta seems to be behind the 8 ball again, as having a large focus city operation at JFK, you would think that they would have already updated their terminal since every other one has been renovated or rebuilt at the airport! Come on Delta!

Delta always making mistake after mistake, they should think of doing this before they were expanding these routes.

So should I close this thread and create a new official thread for the JFK airport with the format "JFK | John F. Kennedy International Airport"?
