The urban development is accelerating in Qatar, and consequently the uses of lands and building get so interlocked that traffic jam problems arise in the heavily populated area - and that is exactly the case of Dafna.

Thus, UPDA invited the firms for an architecture contest to design a building able of containing the staff and client cars. The contest winner was the Arabian Office for Engineering Affairs in Doha.

The car park building is situated in Dafna (section 62) behind UPDA building, with a street in between, and it was necessary that the design be in harmony with the surrounding buildings, Nonetheless, the building architecture and facade design maintain functionality and aesthetics.

UPDA emphasized that the building should be designed according to international standards, taking into account all car sizes and streamlining
car movement inside the building. A very important thing is that the architecture is a blend of the spirit of the past and the modern present through applying traditional architectural elements and Islamic ornamentation on the facade that is surrounded by modern style buildings. And as the car park building is located within a modern area, new material will be utilized, mixing past and present in a wonderful display.

The design was based on the density of usage. The ground floor was allocated for the clients, who would find it easy to move in the building as they come in from the front side. They can also use the pedestrian bridge, which is connected to the UPDA HQ. The higher floors were allocated for the staff that would be able to come in from the back and exit from the front side, letting two cars pass simultaneously, so that no jam problems occur in office hours beginning or end times. Also, the clients’ movement would be
separated from that of the staff, avoiding blocking the surrounding streets.

The seven-story building accommodates 1007 parking places, with 122 for clients on the ground level. In addition, 137 park places exist on each of
the remaining six floors, totaling 822. These floors can be divided so that they service more than one institution. The Business Centre, on the uppermost level, accommodates 63 parking lots. There are also parkings for special needs people near the lifts and escalators on every floor.

The Business Centre contains a multipurpose hall for 250 persons, and another adjacent hall for meetings, workshops and showing building models and projects - the two halls can be combined together. Moreover, the Center has additional two halls, a reception lobby and a cafeteria - all provided with internet, telecoms and other important services.

The building is designed for servicing UPDA primarily, but it can be rented by other organizations.

This is indeed very important in Dafnah area. However, they should make the parking area to be more than 7 floors, perhaps have one that is 20 stories high, using elevators to transport cars. They have these parking lots in cities like Dubai and New York.

Yes indeed you're right Halawala I've seen one in New York, they put your car in some kind of container which automatically goes to its designated place in the parking... that's what I call space optimization!!
