You're absolutely right. No need to apologize. The church can be out of touch with reality sometimes

I just don't understand how investors can put down so much money on a whimsical project when the economy is small and not doing so well and the political situation is so precarious ( Coup attempt happened just today).

the economy is doing fine. the coup attempt was from a crazy former soldier who doesn't know what embarrasment means and yes, investors have already put down a lot of money on this project.

Nah, it's just a shoot of excitement to make up for a boring week.

And the economy isn't small, nor can a stand-off at a ritzy hotel stop it from growing.

The Philippines is a newly industrialized country in South-East Asia. In 2004, it was ranked as the 24th largest economy by the World Bank according to purchasing power parity. It is the fastest-growing economy in Southeast Asia, posting a GDP growth rate of 7.5% in the second quarter of 2007, and has been compared to the economy of India in its sudden and rapid growth

I agree with everyone who opposes to the construction of this tower.
Read my thoughts on the 'E-City' thread.

Everyone is building casinos, (Singapore, Macau, etc.) why not the Philippines?

The real question is, why do we have to?

Do we really need to compete with what could be an over-crowded market?

Look at Abu Dhabi. Instead of competing with Dubai, they're going the opposite direction, positioning themselves as the capital of Arts & Culture in the Middle East.

I'm all for new developments and landmark structures (which Metro Manila seriously lacks) but this needs to be backed with a short, mid, and long-term plan on what ultimately will be Manila's selling point for tourists.

YES!

why do we have to? Simple! Because we want more foreign currency, more tourists and more jobs created!

Do we really need to compete with what could be an over-crowded market? Definitely YES! Because we have a huge potential and advantage over macau and singapore - advantages that money cant buy or produce!

Abu Dhabi and Dubai? Not a good example! Both cities are in UAE. Its no surprise that these cities are going for the opposite directions! You simply cant draw a logical comparison using these CITIES and asian COUNTRIES.
