France's 2nd city is definetely different-looking to Paris, even if there is the occasional ressemblance expected of any city of the same country. Lyon is interesting in that it BEGINS to examplify architecture more common in Southern European countries (particularly Italy...more like North Italian?...I know, Italian architecture can vary from place to place), as well as what I like to call Alipine architecture...architecture you tend to see in Switzerland and maybe Germany near the Alps, etc. This would make sense as it begins to approach the Alps and the South, too.

It actually resembles Rome a lot, especially on the first pictures. I had never seen some decent thread about Lyon, there you go heh. Thank you for the shots, the city's actually very different of what I imagined, but not less beautiful. Thanks!

I think only this picture here is of Lyon's old quarter (if that is what you meant), although it may also be located somewhere in the presqu'île, which is full of 19th c architecture and some earlier 18th c stuff...still old, to some standards. But anyway, Lyon's old quarter is called Le Vieux Lyon. The only reason I make a distinction is because there is older stuff than shown on this thread since most or all of these pics are not taken in Le Vieux Lyon. Here is what they put in Wikipedia in French:

Le Vieux Lyon est le quartier médiéval et renaissance de Lyon. Il est situé en bordure de Saône, au pied de la colline de Fourvière. C'est l'un des quartiers les plus vastes concernant cette pèriode médiévale et renaissance (avec Venise) qui est encore resté intact jusqu'à nos jours.

(Old Lyon is the Medieval and Renaissance quarter of Lyon. It is located on the edge of the Saone River at the foot of the Fourviere Hill. It is one of the largest Medieval and Renaissance quarters (along with Venise) that still remains intact to our days.)
