Samarinda, The Capital of East Kalimantan

Samarinda is the capital of the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan (Kalimantan Timur) on the island of Borneo. The city lies on the banks of the Mahakam River. As well as being the capital, Samarinda is also the most populous city in East Kalimantan with a population of 562,463 (2000) and as such is used by many as a gateway to the more remote regions of the province such as Kutai Barat, Kutai Kartanegara and East Kutai. Reaching these areas usually involves travel by river as the most efficient means. Although it has status as the capital of Kalimantan Timur Province, some of government public service centre is located in Balikpapan, such as Police, Indonesian Army District VI of Tanjung Pura, and Pelabuhan Indonesia (Port Transportation).

Transport into Samarinda itself is facilitated by an airport, Temindung and a port, however, there are plans to relocate both the airport and port soon.

IMO we should start topic about city of Samarinda quite a long ago... together with Balikpapan, anyway its OK ....much better late than nothing

actually Kaltim is fortunate enough to have more than one major cities, there are Balikpapan the booming oil-town and Samarinda the capital
...and beside those two major cities, this rich province also have other fast-growing cities/towns which can be taken into account, i.e Bontang, Tarakan and Tenggarong

OK Just keep up with this thread

O iya ternyata bener, hotel yang ada di jalan hidayatullah itu, ASTON Samarinda City Hotel. The hotel will feature the tallest building and largest ballroom in Samarinda. Dibuka Bulan Maret 2008

nice pictures... just wondering why taking them when flooding?!

I know... I know.... I experienced that Kalimantan/Borneo's rains are crazy (..compare to average Java's rains) ... very heavy and can suddenly make fast flood everywhere...

not surprise, even good drainage system won't be enough... when rains down in Borneo island especially in monsoon season...

Samarinda tu sama aja kyk jakarta, gk jaoh beda. Tiap kali hujan dras pasti bnjir. Gmana gk bnjir, sedimentasi sungai mahakam aj sudah mencpai 15 m, byangin aj tUh kalo dbikin gdung udah brapa tingkat. Sdah dianggarkn miliaran tuh bwt pngrukanny, tp smpe skrg kagak ada tUh. Pemernthny tdur kali. Selain itu jg relokasi pndu2k sungai karang mumus yg cndrung lmbt. Ya gmana bnjrny bs diatasi . . . .
