Some of those panels got pretty durrty. I wonder if they'll clean them or just let 'em be.

concrete is used plenty in LA.....

maybe not used as much as steel but there are still plenty of concrete structures. Best thing for holding up to the quakes is a combo of both. The beams on that LAPD building do look thin, but we really dont know WHAT grade of steel that is being used there though.

Dont forget the US Bank tower has a massively reinforced concrete core.

You are better off in most cases in a steel framed, or concrete reinforced high-rise than in a lot of these 3-4 story wood frame stucco buildings you see in LA. In the last quake we had, those structures got it the worst.

I remember being at Northridge hospital a while back and we took the stairs because I didnt want to wait for the elevator.. well in the stair wells, the steel framing for the building is exposed, and geez the beams were massive I thought. no wonder it held up fine in 1994...

sooner or later we will be hit by another one and its not going to be fun..
We are WAY overdue!! I felt the 4.5 quake in chatsworth a few months ago (I live in chatsworth) and it reminded me that even a moderate quake can give a hell of a good shake.

I took my tarantula aquariums off the shelfs and left them on the floor for weeks after that... I can only imagine in amidst of all the shaking and chaos and broken shit in the pitch black, and having hairy eight legged, and very scared tarantulas running around. I keep telling myslf every week that Im going to bolt those aquariums against the wall

Construction Watch: LAPD Headquarters Gets Clad

By Marissa Gluck
January 25, 2008

It may be costing millions in construction cost overruns, land acquisition expenses, and extra "replacement soil," but it sure is going up fast. The LAPD headquarters is already getting clad. We caught the construction earlier this week, while the SkyscraperCity members are watching the progress practically daily. The project cost is still somewhere in the $420 million range, but don't let that stop you from doing another shot in our LAPD HQ Drinking Game.

I don't know, but in reality that doesn't look like in render. There it seems to be longer and taller than it is now. Is this the whole project going on now or just 1st phase or something?

The MJ Higgins gallery is no more. Didn't take long to reduce it to rubble - it was still standing as of Monday morning.

Putting up a panel on the 2nd Street side.

The glass takes on the mood of the sky very well. Should make for some nice sunset shots.

Closer on the glass on the Spring St. side. Same reflectivity and color as on the 2nd and Main St. sides, but inset a bit to add some texture.

From 1st and Spring. I really need a wider lens.

Glass on the Spring street side. I think this side will look a lot lighter once all this glass is in.

2nd and Main at sunset. This will be a fun building to photograph once it's complete.
