Bilingual Sign

This sign is the favorite one among most of Finns traveling E4 in Sweden. The sign is bilingual because both the names mean something in Finnish, too. Unfortunately, the meaning is not very polite.

The words "hölö mörkö" in Finnish translate approximately to: "a ghost or another frightening creature talking too much and foolishly".

:-)

E12 Västra länken, Umeå

Trafikverket has decided for one of the three alternatives for Västra länken/E12. The stretch will be divided 2+1.

Well, that sucks. They should've gone for the alternative east of Umedalen instead.

Frequent Refueling

Some day, I was reviewing my credit card statement from the last month. I seem to have refueled my car four times in Sweden.

I drove there about 1400 kilometers, and the range of my car is about 750 kilometers. So, where is the beef?

The pay at the pump stations cap the purchase, and the limit is surprisingly low, 400 to 500 SEK (40+ to 50+ euro). I do not know whether this capping applies to Swedish credit cards, too, or foreign ones only.

The gas price was about SEK 14 in July. Thus, for SEK 400, it was possible to buy about 28 liters of gas only, less than a half tankful. Rather annoying, I would say.

Seems very strange, I've never had my fuel purchases capped. I regularly paid up to 800-900 kr back when the gas was close to 15 kr.

It is the standard procedure for foreign cards, or at least my cards, and it has been in place for years.

This time, it was a positive surprise for me that Shell had raised their cap from 400 to 500. OK Q8 in Lund capped the purchase to 490 and St1 Mölletofta to 400.

I did not notice this in Sweden last year. I refueled several times without any cap.

This became a problem in Canada a few years ago. Typically pay at pump was capped at $100. When gasoline was 70 cents it was not an issue. But when it started approaching $1.25 it ended up on TV and soon they changed the rule. I'm not sure if it was removed or just set to $200...

Were you using a debit or credit card?

A debit card. I rarely have to use my credit card for fuel nowadays.

I used my credit card in Sweden one month ago and it was not capped. I bought more than 40l Diesel.

It's the distance of the road within the county where 0 = southernmost point (for E22 in Kalmar county it's Brömsebro on the border to Blekinge). Every hundred meter is marked out as point of reference, the road agency can point to "Damage on the railing between 16.1-16.3", ambulances get referred to "accident between 38.2-39.0".

Roadwork on the E796

There is some work going on along the road E796 (E4 until 1975) from Linköping to Linghem.
Is this going to be a 2+1 road or are they only making the road wider ?

A concrete wall is closing off one lane.

They're laying down pipes for district heating to connect Linghem to Linköping's grid. (source)

It also seems there are plans to construct a bicycle path when work on the pipes are complete. I can't see any reason for that though since there are very few cyclists going to Linghem all the way from Linköping or even from Tallboda. The road is also wide enough for cyclists currently since it's an old 13 meter road that hasn't been converted into 2+1.

You also might want to call it lv 796 instead of E796 since E-roads are part of the European E-network while this is just a regular county road which happens to be in E-län and calling it E796 will only make sense to those familiar with Swedish county letter designations.

Speed limits in Linköping

A map of speed limits in Linköping now that the municipal change of speed limits is done. For those wondering I exported the data from OpenStreetMap and rendered it using Maperitive and a custom ruleset I created.

Background on the speed limit change
Back in late 2008 the official document "Rätt fart i staden" (Right speed in the city) was released, setting new guidelines for speed limits in city environments. Instead of the classic 30-50-70, the recommended approach is to use 30-40-60 and in recent years most municipalities have started work on reviewing their speed limits. Linköping started changing the limits last year and have now completed this change. The neighbouring city Norrköping changed theirs last year too, but all at the same time while Linköping's change was divided into phases.
