Contract awarded for upgrade of riksväg 34 between Motala and Borensberg

NCC has been awarded the contract [Swedish] for the upgrade and construction of a new alignment of riksväg 34 between Motala (Ervasteby) and Borensberg. The contract is worth 128 million SEK (12,8 million €). Opening of the new road is planned for autumn 2020.

The current alignment of riksväg 34 between Borensberg and Motala (Ervasteby) has poor standard with a width of only 7,5 m and the speed limit being 70 km/h. It passes through or near several farms, etc. and has lots of driveways with direct access to the main road. The AADT is ~5 000.

The new road will feature 2+1 lanes and a speed limit of 100 km/h.

Is this an 18,5 or 19,5 m. cross section?. It seems awfully narrow.

Automatic increase of fuel tax

Since 2015/2016 the fuel tax automatically goes up every year. This year the increase is 30 öre (0,03 €) per liter for petrol and 27 (0,027 €) öre per liter for diesel, both including VAT.

After the increase, today's price was 14,51 SEK/liter (1,48 €).

I think your euro figures are one decimal off (Not € 0.30, but € 0.03 / 3 cents).

The same thing happened in the Netherlands by the way, but the increase was small (under 1 cent).

Will there be a new bridge to island of Alnö in Sundsvall?

Politicians in the city of Sundsvall wants to replace the old Alnö Bridge with a new bridge. Today's bridge is 1042 m and was opened in 1964. Today's traffic volume is approximately 13 000 AADT with 2x1 lanes.

Alnön has about 8500 inhabitants, with the largest part commuting to the central parts of the region every day. In the summertime, the population doubles. The capacity of the bridge currently limints further expansions of Alnö.

The news was published in the local news paper before christmas:
http://www.st.nu/vasternorrland/sund...-fraga-for-oss

The location of the bridge:
https://www.google.se/maps/@62.43316...4568,16z?hl=sv

With a new bridge, the expansion of Alnö can begin. My recommendation for a new bridge would be at least 3 lanes: one in each direction and one in the middle who can adjust to the flow during the day. Most resonable would be 2x2. the old bridge can be used for bicycles.

Surprised to see the VW Passat on top 5. Have not seen many of those compared to Octavia for example.

It is also interesting to note how very different the Norwegian and Swedish top 10 lists are. Only Octavia, Golf, and Passat are on both lists. Of course, Swedish affinity to Volvo, and large differences in Norwegian and Swedish taxation policies are important underlying drivers here. Volvo used to be big in Norway as well (it is now the 4th biggest brand), but is IMO now more a luxury car than the practical and reasonably affordable alternative it used to be a few decades back.
