Thanks for the videos, pmaciej7! Those Swedish motorways look great, although 90 km/h seems a bit restrictive for that last 2x4 section - is there any reason why they don't allow 100 or 110 km/h speeds there?

Traffic density? Movie was made on sunday morning, when traffic is lower. Also noise protection and short distance between exits, i think.

90 km/h is usual speedlimit in suburban areas in Sweden.

Yeah, the Essingeleden runs elevated through a heavily urbanized area if I remember correctly. Sometimes slow speed limits are justified, you know..

Essingeleden has a 70 km/h speed limit, the 90 km/h limit is on the E3 between Järva Krog and Sollentuna. These sections have quite a high traffic density on weekdays but I also think that at least the 90 km/h section could be a 100 or 110 section. They need to install variable speed limit signs just as on E18 northeast of Stockholm.

News today: Förbifart Stockholm, the motorway bypass of Stockholm, is now going to be ALL in tunnel, meaning that Stockholm will get Sweden's longest tunnel: 16km.

Along the western suburbs, from Skärholmen to Häggvik going under the Ekerö islands. It'll be the world's fourth longest road tunnel.

Here is one:
http://www.vv.se/filer/8216/karta%20PP.jpg
There are some 'full' parts there where there would be bridges/overground parts but now it's all underground.

The environmental opposition to this road has been huge so this will help a lot, though lots of scenery will be replaced by tunnel walls! But I suppose it's good to protect the environment of that beautiful area.

Great work, Dan. I didn't think of looking there.
It says in the article that the tunnel solution costs just as much as the bridge, and that safety is no issue. So why intrude on a natural reserve?

I guess they will have to make this tunnel even prettier than Södra Länken. The trafikplats Nynäsvägen coming from Nacka is possibly the most beautiful underground intersection in the world.

Will Förbifart be the widest tunnel motorway that is this long?

I mean Norway has the world's longest but it's just 1x1 without even a divider or anything, just two lanes next to each other total. This tunnel (16km) will be in two separate tunnels, 3x3.

Förbifart sounds funny in Dutch. It's similar to "voorbijvaart", what means something like "bypass" although you will never hear that word used that way.

3x3? Express lanes in the middle? Or perhaps you meant 3x2.

How much is the traffic at Essingeleden estimated to decrease with Ff-Sthlm?

The tunnel will be 4x6 and used as an alternate route to the French A86

There will be two tunnels with three lanes in each direction. Happy?

Two (2) tunnels with three (3) lanes in each direction (=2) 2x3x2 = 12
