Either way, steel would allow them to greatly reduce the amount of structure, allowing for larger column-free spaces, bigger window walls, and any sort of double-height unit.

I can't think of a woodframe building that has open double-height spaces topped by several additional floors. There's a reason.
Website DOES show floor plans for each unit all of which are single story and smaller. In fact, all of these are studios <800 sq ft. They DO have larger windows so the steel mak be HELPING in support. That would make sense.

They have several loft plans, including full-height second levels and 4'6" second levels.

I didn't do a tally, but I think some floorplans are missing.

It looked yesterday like the unmanned crane for the Landes apartments (on lower 1st hill -- 8th & Marion?) was coming down. Since the Landes apartments are just reaching ground level, this seemed like an odd decision.

But it also looked like a bigger crane was going up, apparently for the office project on the west side of the same block. Is it possible the two projects will share a crane? Is there some risk two cranes on the same block can collide if both are up at the same time and the contractors made some kind of deal?

They wouldn't share. But maybe they made a deal.

I have a question: I remember reading that Costco was planning to build the first multi-story store in Seattle near Bitter Lake, specifically Aurora and N. 130th. But that was a couple of years ago, and the area still looks the same. Do you guys know anything about it?

I noticed today that it looks like digging has started at 43rd and Roosevelt. I believe this is a 6-story, 100-ish unit woodframe apartment building.

That's good about Roosevelt. The U-District is good now, but it would be a truly excellent urban district if it filled in a bit right in the middle.

That roosevelt project is faculty housing, here's an old article on it in the PI

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/...housing12.html

The existing building across the street got renovated and turned into condos.

There's 12 townhomes under construction at 40th and 7th and what looks like it will become a small apartment building on 42nd and 7th.

They're getting closer to finishing that big project up between 47th and 50th on the ave "lotharien" which should help a lot there by getting more people onto the street. Also they closed the infamous tommy's which was probably helping to sketchify that stretch of street.

I think the UW faculty housing would go just north of the Roosevelt project, actually. The current project's site was formerly a car repair shop, if I recall correctly, and the parking lot to the north (which used to be Safeco's) is still a parking lot; I think that's the faculty housing site.

Enticing faculty with housing seems like a great idea (and it would fill in this block), so I hope they go forward with it in the future.

Hmm, I just assumed it out all be the same project, I'll have to look closer but it looks like they're excavating both sites at the same time.

The article is from February and only said they were thinking about faculty housing. Nothing major goes from "thinking" to breaking ground in less than 14 or 15 months in Seattle. Furthermore, government agencies don't move very quickly.

In the case of the UW housing, we haven't heard anything more about it, so it probably won't happen until 2009 at the earliest. My guess is they'd hire a third-party developer like they did in Tacoma. That would allow them to use the low interest rates available to public agencies plus the speed and talents of a private developer.

I'm so glad that they didn't demolish that beautiful corner building! I love Stadium Loft rendering! Can't wait to see that neighborhood start to improve within years from now.

So I took a closer look today, and I was completely wrong. The car park is still there, so it's definitely not the faculty housing project, and it is that 6 story woodframe. But still, if they do get around to building that faculty housing project and whole block will end up being nice new pastel midrise housing.

Midrise housing = good. Too much pastel/beige/gray = not so good. I hope these projects use brick and/or vivid colors.

That's a huge Aurora Village redevelopment. There are about 5 midrises in that project from 2 or is it 3 of them you can see at that angle. I'm not sure about the details, though.
