Bank of England Building

That's another 60's building on the way out.

Is there a picture of the building that the BoE replaced?

The Royal arcade. Its covered in a fem places in this forum but start with:

Posting 509 onwards. Bits of it are now buried in Sheildfield and Heaton - presumably to confuse future archaeologists .

Bank of England Branch

Steve, great photos of the old bank of england branch. I can tell you quite a bit about this building as I worked in it from 1987 - 1990 as a bank clerk. The rear entrance is as you correctly say a the entrance to the vaults. There is a large underground car park with a couple of loading bays underneath. This is three floors below the street level of the main building.

The entrance at street level was the staff entrance with the security control room to the left. There was quite a bit of marble in there but I suspect it has been stripped out for reselling.

I would love to get in there to take some photos there are a number of corridors and levels tucked away underground and it would be a shame to see this just pulled down without some historical pictures kept.

Built between 1968 and 1971 to a design by Architects Fitzroy, Robinson and Partners.

Good to hear from someone who has worked there and if you do manage to get inside for a look around, remember to post you photographs here

Be great to get in, but even the police are now refusing to enter when the naughty tramps land because of asbestos [mind you that might be more of a case of we've better things to do].

So I went down to see what was going on today after driving past. Looks like the hoodies will deny us all of the opportunity to get some pictures. The place is being made safe by thompsons as they have stripped out anything of worth in there including the front doors. They have been selling the brass for scrap and according to thompsons making £2,000 per day. Apparantly the access to the vaults was bricked up so they have not been down there. Will try again but apparantly its off limits and the police won't even go in there.

(you can just make out one of 3 young intruders on the second floor, wearing a blue hoodie. Entrance was effected by use of a large club hammer.)

Bank of England building finally to be demolished
by Michael Brown, Evening Chronicle, December 1st 2011

The demolition of the Bank of England building on Pilgrim Street

The former Bank of England near the Swan House Roundabout in Newcastle has been empty for years, now, after lengthy delays, demolition finally got underway.

But the multi-million pound regeneration of East Pilgrim Street, that once hoped to lure the likes of luxury stores Harvey Nichols and Selfridges to the city, still lies a long way ahead.

Council leader Nick Forbes said investors are being “actively sought” for the site and the most likely use for the plot in the near future is temporary car parking or a pocket park.

Coun Forbes said: “This building has been an eyesore and a security problem for sometime and I am glad it is finally being demolished. However, the extent of any development in the next few years depends on the economy and the availability of Government funding.”

He added: “The site is a key gateway to the city from the south and it needs to be a fitting entrance to Newcastle.”

The building is now a health and safety hazard. The windows are broken and lose pieces or ceiling etc that contain asbestos could be blown out of the building by the wind. Thieves are just breaking in all the time and because of the asbestos and other damage by thieves it would be unsafe to have someone man the building and boardings on the building aren't doing any good in keeping people out.

In an ideal world we would have a fantastic building in it's place with planning permission and funding for it to go up straight away, however thats not the case and for the safety of others it's best it came down ASAP and unfortunately turned into a either car park or a pocket park.

Well if Forbes sees this as 'a key gateway to the city from the south and it needs to be a fitting entrance to Newcastle' then shame on NCC for not taking steps to make the owners tidy the place up and NOT permit it to be over run by youngsters with nothing better to do than destroy the building internally.

I wonder how true the statement 'investors are being actively sought' by NCC actually is - surely that is the developers/land owners job.

My money is for NCP to take the land on a short lease and use it to increase their ever increasing Worswick Street Expensive Car Park.

Yes. I like you NH was a fan of the building, but it is very sad to see it in the state it is today, so the sooner it is put out of its misery the better. Not that I'm looking forward to a lovely big gateway car park!

Hooray! It's going! However, it's annoying that there aren't any plans about what to replace it with.

The Thompsons of Prudhoe crew were down there this afternoon but it looked more like they were just securing it. Further up the street, past the gap, they've also removed some of the fences. The treatment on the next building 'up' from BoE looks weird to me.

The last link deals with the rendering of the outside wall and this also deals with the manner in which some but not all of the original shop fronts are to be restored, the others simply boarded over so it will be interesting to see what the finished article looks like.
